Alliance-inking

My first pin-up concept drawing for a comic book I am working on with the writer Brian Daniel. It is at the very first development stage, so none of the characters are at their final stage. More updates regarding the book are comming soon.
(All character designs and creations are copyright Brian Daniel)

The Ultimate Man-inking

A pin up of "The Ultimate Man", the main character for the comic "The Alliance"......A bit of a loser approach..still trying to decide what direction we will go into. Crits are welcome.

Is the guy in the first piece supposed to have 6 fingers on one hand? The colored version seems to be a bit random in its color composition, nothing interesting or realistic going on with the lighting either. You have the white glow around his had, but it's not affecting any of the other figures or objects. And your use of the dodge and burn tools is pretty obvious - those are a big no-no, they mess with your K level which is bad for comics you intend to print, and they also just look bad in general. The (I'm guessing Asian?) lady without the witch hat has a completely unrealistic skin tone. Actually, they both need work. I like the second one better just cuz it's simpler - the cel-shading style works a lot better for it.

I'm going to second using the cel shaded look. The style that you're going for is highly inconsistant. What I mean by this is that the female characters faces look like caricatures of actual people with weird stretches and they don't blend in with the rest of the piece at all. Your male figures look like typical American comic book characters with no caricature traits incorporated. I'd say stick with the loose style that you used in the pin up, which is actually a better looking cover piece. I'd also recommend checking out a few successful comic book cover artists like Dave Johnson, Adam Hughes, LF Yu, Carey Nord, Mike Mignola, Ashley Wood, and James Jean just to name a few. Nothing screams amateur hour more than a weak cover. Keep in mind, your cover is going to be what prompts someone to pick the book up off the shelf. With that in mind, it has to look great and tell the potential buyer what the property is all about, and that first piece doesn't make me want to pick the book up off the shelf.

Mr Visions-thaaaaaanks buddy..glad u dig. well....you can kick my ass in comic book work any day anyways......hahahahahaha...but I'm trying...LOL.....can't wait to see where your comic is going too man.

Nonie- well....first of all: I trully appreciate you taking the time to write sucha long crit, means a lot..thanks a bunch (And I really, really dig your worK)second: the first one is actually not a cover...it probably won't even be used in the comic..I don't know if you read my first statement, but this was just a first concept. and boy the six fingers??..what the F*&*&?..I have no idea how that happend....I guess you should never draw at a party with too many distractions..phewww..thanks for bringing that up.....in terms of the coloring..I know I know..I got major issues..still practicing there and figuring Photoshop out..Hopefully by the time we have final character designs....the colors will be better.

Undertow- thank u kindly for sucha detailed crit. well..like I mentioned above..none of these are covers or anything....these were my very first attempts at conceptualizing and vizualizing the characters. I'm very familiar with all the artists you have mentioned...these were nothing more than first-time pin ups..but you are right..I still can't decide on a style or look of the comic...and I'm still trying to figure out what any of the characters will look like......thanks a bunch and I hope you check back when I post more work....the crit is much appreciated
