Neo Nazi Samurai from Great Britain (Big Download)

Ok, its been a while since I have posted a 3d piece so I felt I should take the time and post this huge dump on the lasted sculpt I finished. This is a character I created and painted in photoshop. I documented the process (not as well as I should) of the sculpting process too.

This is the concept illustration that will be my guidelines for the sculpt

Sorry I didnt take photos of the preliminary processes, but it can be explained. For the armature, I used aluminum scultptors wire and a 4" x 4" wood base. I drilled holes in the base slightly smaller than the gadge of the wire so it wouldnt come detached and break into a million pieces. To connect the joints of the armature, I used thinner gadged aluminum wire and wrapped it around the thicker wire so there is still some flexibility. I then wrapped aluminum foil around the torso area (the thickest part of the sculpt) so I wouldn't waist too much sculpey.

As for the sculpey, I used the regular flesh colored super sculpey and mixed it with the sculpey III gray color to create a midtone so it is easier to see the detail and inconsistencies.

Ok, I apply the sculpey in small pieces to flesh out the basic anatomy. I smooth it all in with a plastic tool with "teeth". The teeth make small lines in the sculpey that you can later smooth out with rubbing alcohol or turpenoid. You can also see that I chose a slightly more natural pose in the armature than the stiff drawing. I left the arms off so I can get to his sides without bumping into the arms.

From here I start building up the clothing and armor like a doll. I also heat gun it in stages, there is about three, the under clothing, mid clothing, and upper clothing, its kinda wierd but it works for me. By the way if any of you are familiar with "Kenji" on these forums, thats him in the background. The tools I use are very similar to Smellybug's, he is god. You can probably see some of the tools on my messy desk around the sculpt.

I Kind of start from the mid section of the figure and work my way down, for some reason it is easier. I also try and get the mass geometry all straight before going on to the fine detail and texture. For the armor and stuff I basically make it separately then stick it on and blend it in.

It is still rough at this stage, and I haven't yet commited to firing the first stage yet, I finish adding on all the pieces for the first stage, then focus on smoothing everything out.

On this shingaurd, I created a stamp pattern using a button with a cool texture on it, this way it saves me a hell of a lot of time noodling it by hand.

After I get this area polished to where I am satisfied, I fire it before I change my mind. In stage two, I start to model the arms and the bags and pouches around the torso.

Stage three is basically just concentrating on the head antennas. I was going to add the oxygen tubing to an oxygen tank on his back, but I wasn't happy with it in the 3d form. I will eventually paint it, hopefully soon, but I want to bust out a couple of these before the semester is up. This one took me two weeks.

Wow, this really is quite amazing. You documented it well enough for us! Is this just a personal project?

I'd love to see more of your 2d and 3d work. Do you have a website?

i.. really honestly cant believe what i just saw.

il scip the butt kissing, and gos traight to the noob questions:

how do u create stuff like the head antenae, the armor plates, basically stuff that is symmetrical on both sides, completely smooth, and metal.

once u make it, wouldnt it loose shape in your hands as u apply pressure when ur sticking it on the figure?
and what about the belts? how do u cut them so that theyr the same width everywhere?
and even more importantly how do you keep that going after you stick the belt on?

with my super sculpey when i made belts, and accidently touched them later the belt would loose shape and just get owned. it would just get owned when i put it into the figure. so i can imagine what would happen if i tried a metal armour piece.

thanks a ton dude, great work, i hope to see it painted soon.

Yea, I know it's not that inspiring, but I always sucked at keeping diaries/journals/sketchobooks and the like. Stay tuned, I'm sure I'm bound to start putting more in it!

Wow, Im glad you all like my piece. I should have another up soon, hopefully female with little clothing.

Johnnyhorse- Thanks man, I don't have a website up yet, kinda collaborating with two other students at CCAD to get one up to get down on the cost. Should have one up shortly though.

Justin Oaksford- Thanks man, you really think so?

pijay-brown- I should paint it soon in the future, but I want to do a couple more sculpts before I have some fun with color.

Cat- Hmm.. It took me two weeks but the amount of hours is between 40-60 I think.

Arne S.-Yea your right. The title is kinda bland but it is just taking from my inspiration. With the clothing and color I took from the German WWII Panzershrek and Infantry garments & color patterns. Most of the armor designs were from Japanese Samurai inspiration and it is from Great Britain for no reason at all except I like its flag."?"

jega74- Thanks man

timliutian- With mech stuff, I haven't explored 3 dimensionally, kindofa bitch to sculpt in sculpey. Gundam type stuff would better be suited for castilene or hard foam.

Saittam_j & deomonte21- Thanks a lot guys.

Snakeman- It is about 11.5" tall x 4"l & w. The shingaurd texture I used a palette utensel which is basically a scapel tool which looks like a mini paint scrapper. The Chest plate texture I used a snub nosed needle tool, which basically has a ball at the end of it. Write me back if your are confused and I will post pics of both of the specific tools I use.

manslauter- For the more "geometric" pieces such as the armor and chest plates, I sculpt those pieces separetly. After I have the basic anatomy I sculpt the chest plate on my draing table by rolling in out to a thin even shape on the table then cut the piece into the desired shape with an exacto blade. Then I carefully apply it to the form and use different tools to blend and flesh out wrinkles and textures. For the armor I basically do the same thing except use rubbing alcohol to smooth out the surface to give it a metal quality. Does this make sense? Cuz I had a couple of beers prior to writing this.

J_absinthe- Thanks dude Ill be sure to update this thread in the future once I paint the sucker.

Great job on this one Brian. I especially like the shots with Kenji in it. He's a focal point that I would've omitted. He's sexier than your sculpt . haha, j/k.

You're still sexy though Kenji

well ok, but how do u keep th belts and armor the way it is after u stick it on?
dont u later bump into it with ur hands or tools by accident and ruin it?

also in the armor pieces, is there anything inside or is it just straight up sculpey?

brandonshiflett- Thanks man, and to tell you the truth, I was a little intimidated starting this piece because I thought I went a little too crazy in the illustration and there'd be no way I could pull it off in two weeks. Thank god for energy drinks...

manslauter- The belt after I stuck it on was pretty easy not to bump into it with my hands because I stuck metal wires in it to support the pouches (you can see them in the previous pics) If I didn't have those in, the belt would be one of the last things I would put on in the first stage. To make it the right size and thickness, I rolled out a piece of sculpey and cut basically a long rectangle and carfully stuck it on the waist and smoothed it out w/ rubbing alcohol and a tool. Then I go over it with a cloth texture which was the grip on my exacto blade so I rolled that over it. The armor pieces are straight up sculpey, except for the antennas which have wires supporting them so they won't break.

fooxoo- Thanks a lot man

character- Hah,lol yeah I was watching that when I was working on it. I just saw "The Departed" yesterday and that was an awesome movie. If you like Lock Stock, you should go see the departed.

TheGnoll- Thanks man, I hope to have another one of these done in a couple of weeks, this time it should be a European Vixen (dominatrix inspired) of the future, could be cheesy, but these are some of the preliminary ideas I am brainstorming, not quite there yet though.
