Hey man first I'd like to say you've got some crazy stuff in this sketch book, good work !
Secondly, I noticed ruuhkis' long comment and your reply to it. I agree what he has to say about the emotinal aspect of every piece of art. But he himself says it too -But before one calls oneself a master in any given field one has to work on those very things starting from values and composing shapes and form and moving on to more minute aspects of anatomy and perspective and composition. Nothing comes naturally to anybody (unless a person is super-duper talented, which is very unlikely) and demands buckets of your sweat and tearsfacts like perspective, resemblance to the subject matter, anatomy, correct value and color should come naturally and a master should not pay much attention to them if he wants to achieve a striking painting.
There's a saying going 'round that a person needs to spend ~10 000 hours on honing a skill to be able to call oneself a master. And that's a helluva lot of studies, sketches, trying things out and then working on longer pieces of art to try out everything you've learned.
So keep up the studies, anatomy, composition and otherwise !
For pencilwork, take the softest pencil or piece of graphite you can get, sharpen it to a fine point and do some abstract studies. Transitions from darkest to lightest and lightest to darkest and never mind the hatching or anything, that comes later. If you really really want to kick ass at hatching then just work separately on hatching on lined paper, fill each are between two lines with fine hatchwork, again - get the values, it's all abstract so just make your own patterns. Later you can try hatching in the direction where the form turns and... yeah. Sleep. Sleep; must go sleep.

Solid improvement since I last time visited this thread. I like many things in here. Hard to suggest something because you're going forward well . Try doing more still life to closely observe form. Relying on photos too much can sometimes take away from the real thing. Also you seem to block stuff with pretty heavy hand and straight thick lines. Characters loose a bit of organic feel from that. Maybe more light blind contour exercise could help in breaking that.
Regarding the comment on the previous page. I've read several times people complaining about so many Craig Mullins rip-offs. By suggesting to analyze his art you really encourage to join this trend. He established certain popular style in digital art but it's not obligatory. There are many other masters out there.
And fun should come naturally first so keep that moleskine doodles if you can .

Farvus: hey mate, glad you came back, i just bought a laptop so its easier for me to find a good spot to paint from life, ill make sure to do still life like you suggested and stop doing only photo studies. I was inspired a ton by mullins when i started digital painting, and i still think hes one of the best out there, but like you said theres other masters out there, theres so much clones of mullins that not only copy his 'techniques, but also his subjects... im more interested in traditional paintings masters these days. Thanks for dropping by, I've heard that thing about the 10 000 hours, im sure its pretty true... and it tells me that 1 hour per day is really not enough And the more you condense those hours the faster you probably improve, rather than extending it to a longer period of time... blargggg wish I drawed more when i was younger instead of playing those damn video games. About my reply to Ruukhis, i totally agree about what he said, but like you said, im not a master yet, and i got miles and miles to go before those things comes to me naturally, thats why i got to do all those studies... and like i dont think a study is the place for abstracting stuff and trying to add an emotion that isnt there in your subject, if theres any emotion or atmosphere emanating from the study, it should mean that it was present in the subject itself at the time the artist did it. I dont consider any of the stuff in this SB worth being in a portefolio yet... when the time will come when i do only stuff from imagination, ill make sure to spend time thinking about the composition and emotion of the piece to make sure to reach the viewer more than i would with a merely technical reproduction. Thanks for the tips on the pencil leads, i always been a bit scared of those soft pencil since they make pretty messy linework..

Another lunchtime enviro study, trying to optimize the brush strokes and try out new brushes. I suck at clouds, need to do more of that. Think im learning from those quick things, need to find time to do stuff from imagination too.

Your stuff is getting pretty good.
Some of your figures seem a little stiff... which you might be able to alleviate using some nice action lines. These lines should follow the main action of the figure, but also be echoed in the forms that surround them. This gives the figures more rhythm and it also ties them together. Figures like that tend to lose the "stiff" look.
You're doing very well. Your work is very nice.
