full blown tutorial of recent painting (big download)
hey everyone. some people were asking for a full blown tutorial, so here is my attempt at one. i never realized how boring it is when you try to break down each step, so i hope people dont fall asleep before its over. first here is the final image. i posted this a few days ago in my sketchbook thread, but throught it would make a good image to make the tutorial from.

Did you have an idea of what you wanted to the picture to look like before you started out, if so, why did you use the funny shaped brush for rectangle like shapes?
The detail is immense when it's zoomed out, why did you use such a large resolution and how long did it take? |

There's a great story about Pablo Picasso. Some guy told Picasso he'd pay him to draw a picture on a napkin. Picasso whipped out a pen and banged out a sketch, handed it to the guy, and said, "One million dollars, please." "A million dollars?" the guy exclaimed. "That only took you thirty seconds!" "Yes," said Picasso. "But it took me fifty years to learn how to draw that in thirty seconds." teh sketchbook teh portfolio |

I don't wish to seem offensive but I think the tutorial can hinder people more than it can help.
It's fairly obvious that you worked this from a photo reference. Comments like "don't forget to add interesting little shapes of light" without any explanation of how you are deciding on these points also indicate this, as if you were drawing this from scratch you'd have an understanding of the surrounding buildings you were putting in that create these shadows. There's also no explanation of perspective either so really this seems more like just a demonstration of a drawing you did rather than an actual tutorial on reproducible methods of illustration. |

That was a very informative piece of work. I thank you very much. Great work. When i first saw the picture i had to second guess whether or not it was a real photograph!

I also dont want to be offensive, but I think you have taken this straight from a video tutorial, I recognise the image and have seen someone recreating this scene before. I think it is from the Lynda.com Photorealism class, but I am unsure. I appreciate you have done the work yourself, but i believe the credit for the composition and technique is down to another person.

HEEEEy!!!! absolutely beautifull, both the image and the tutorial!!!!
To jdoe2. I am not sure what your comment ment. If the image is worked from reff, then tip about the light means "don't overlook such details, they make your piece interresting". If not, then it's reffering to random light tedails, as with the reflections on a window. So it does make sence... as for the perspective, I don't think you'd ask Djurdjevic or Android to brake down figues to blocks and proportions in each tutorial right? If every tutorial started from such basic stuff as 2 point perspective and colour theory, then they'd never end... thre are other, veeeery detailed and extensive tutorials around these pages covering all these topics! ![]() |

that is incrediably realistic rendering, great tut, thouhg it was very simple, it makes it difficult to get tones, to match, and to make it look realistic,

Personally, I think that the biggest weakness of this tutorial is that 99% of pros would build some kind of perspective grid when drawing or painting architecture, even if it's drawn from reference. At the very least there would be some indication of perspective.
It's too difficult and time-consuming to try and fudge the perspective on something as complex as a building - all the details have to conform to the perspective and without a grid or at least some lines it's extremely difficult. So a really useful tutorial, especially one aimed at beginners, would have included this crucial step. |
