hope you're enjoying the holiday season with the family. Still rushing to complete projects at work which will go straight into february...
Razorb, thanks~! Gotta sleep soon... i'll return the favour in your sketchbook tomrrow... noted some interesting mechanical designs.
random extracts from the sketchbook tonight... two old semi-completed pieces and a lot of new sketches. Switching gears a little tonight. Need to kick things up a notch.
I really like that last vehicle design. Great job.
Hey man great stuff going on here. Love the tech stuff mostly. cheers
hey machzero, really nice seeing lots of updates; I need to do that myself... sorry I haven't replied recently, busy with school stuff (had to say that to everyone in the sketchgroup ). great ship designs as always, such nice looking stuff everytime. I like these 2 people you've posted alot; cool armor designs for both of em. their legs look a little long (moreso on the lady) but it doesn't look bad. very nice faces on both of them as well, especially the lady. I think the creases in the guys forehead make him look rather old, but not sure if that's what you were going for.
lastly, very nice thumbs and sketch for that building. really cool that you can derive so much detail from your sketches like that... great work all around though man, keep em comin!
*sneaks in quietly*
DARAF - thanks your comments~! but only the tech stuff is loved? *sniffle sniffle* heheh... I'm still gonna struggle with figures and anatomy til i'm somewhat happy though! heheh
Ben_Olson - it's quite an honour hearing that from you. Saw your work weeks ago and was/am still blown away by it.
hey onir, comments noted~! More alternate sketches of those pics to follow. However, this is really my sketchbook. A lot of these are doodles that will never be completed *hpslashluvr syndrome*. Heheh.
quick updates... some DSGs... will always try to tie in to existing "worlds" if possible
quick half an hour sketch of previously posted character... the shadow side is seriously messed up...
something which i haven't done in a long time. GIANT ROBOTS! ten minute sketch here... let's see where this goes.
SEn > some great updates there. When do I get to see a purely coloured in enviroment (without lines?)
hey man, great update! oh and real quickly I definitely understand what you're saying about this being your sketchbook; just felt I should offer what criticism I can since you always help me and the others in the ssg I really like the second one with the lady looking off the balcony, I think she came out really nicely. not sure what the AIIIIIEEEE!! is but I'm sure the topic would help explain that lol. your mechanical stuff looks great as always, and I really like the giant robot. always makes me wonder how people can come up with things like that; I've tried and I guess I haven't studied enough mechanical things to successfully make anything that really looks mechanical. lastly, I'd say the third one is probably my favorite of these; great scale and the lighting works really well for it. not much I can really see to crit on, so just keep it up!
koshdude~! i'll start doing those once i learn how to draw~! i still need to get all those rotten ideas down on paper before i start to slap colours on... heheh. More "project" stuff in the works though...
yo onir~! criticism noted~! Keep firing away, it'll help the finished pics if i decide to carry any of them further. And if it wasn't for the SSG, i might just get one comment a month~! oh waiit... heheheh.
the lady on the balcony DSG was titled something like "her hair tried to eat him". And I actually did that robot with basic anatomy... but easier! Replace entire set of muscles with one hydraulic piston. Done!
quick sketch dump. Been doing nothing but 5-8 hours of technical stuff and vb scripting at work for the past two weeks. Fries the other side of the brain... kills the doodling cells.
fifteen minute DSG... too quick and sloppy. Saw the title before going to bed, doodled, uploaded, crashed... liked a bit of the building design. Might redo it eventually.
another test character portrait, addition to the previous ones.
experiment... need to study some cloud pics more
arse backwards... i designed the shuttles after doing the pic
clean-up of the previous mech doodle. A few more iterations to go. Will prolly redo the knee/elbow joints, not too happy with the look.
revisit to a previous DSG with the cavern...
more arse backwards designing... after doing lineart/almost completed images of the ships, i decide to check out their silhouettes. Quite pleased with most of them. What these are used for will hopefully be shown later...
1:10am with early work tomorrow... time to zzz....
some interesting concept designs....
good start on the atmosphere landing painting with colours!
More stuff dude!
some of your sketches are unclear like dsg 1168 (whew that's a big number)...really like dsg 1163 - nice moody lighting and cool perspective.
koshdude! i'm gonna start posting write-ups and background story on that forum spyke has set up soon. More colour experiments to come too. Will keep ya updated. Collab... collab?
Razorb, thanks for the compliments~!
hey farvus! you know how shaky i am with anatomy atm. One thing at a time, but yeah... i definitely keep recycling some faces~! it's much much worse when i draw male characters. Meanwhile, more of that "elite"-like project to come.
yo hp~! woo... name change~! horse power! hewlett packard~! harmful pancake~! heavy potato~~!! *gets killed by hp* almost all the sketches are sloppy doodles, which I should really spend more time on. And i think i'm still terrible at sketching. Most of the 1168 is a rough doodle... the middle is where i started to go in and refine.
new year approaching. Just had a nice 3 day weekend for xmas... drank a wee bit too much. Can't sleep well after drinking so spent the whole night playing with photoshop while chugging water to avoid hangover. And a four day weekend coming with new year. Anyway, another boring tech stuff thingy. This time, the exterior of this scene.
other stuff still too rough/incomprehensible to post.
I like your method. Loose sketch that dictates the outcome of perspective view seems more intuivtive than drawing all guidelines at the beginning. However, to me it's so difficult to design anything when it's in 3d. I prefer profile view which I can later redraw in more dynamic angle.
The design has something from Space Odyssey 2001. Nice
Keep it up!
thanks for the comments. Looking at the original sketch, there's a lot of 2001's "baby's rattle" design in the ship. But since the 2001's ship was also an exploration ship, that's good... heh.
i cheat a lot when it comes to perspective, trying to improve on speed when it comes to these quick designs. If you were to accurately transfer those sketches into proper profiles... the length would be ridiculous~!
oh yeah, all shadows are mainly wrong also.
DSG dump... quick doodle, topic is some kind of autonomous exploratory robot. Then decided to have some fun. Some might get the joke.
Detailed thumbnail to work out a few things. Not very good with composition, but looks like it'll work. WIP.
first, question to the rare few that respond to this thread (thanks btw~! heheheh)... do the quick WIP shots help? Should i bother? Since it takes about 15-20 mins to put each other from all those layers (i always get lost in rendering and rarely take progress shots).
okay... time to go nutz... made a little challenge to myself... a specific aim to meet before feb 13th. So here goes...

An update! Wunderba!
Good tosee all the designs and sketches being worked out. An improvement with enviroment composition as well. I quite like the detail/perspective on the last jeep/rover/buggy aspect
let's see if i can do 200 by the 13th. Half of these was done using your 4x5 graphire! heheh.
if spyke gets off his arse, you might see some of these designs in 3D and animated.
no reference used at this stage. Will pull those out if i get stuck drawing engines or actual weapon internals or something. A bit raw, but included is a sample of an earlier doodle cleaned up.

great sense of mech design, really great.I think those design would look beter if they had some more contrast in the painting, and more attention to shading, but as i said the actual design and linework is very good.Enviroments look good, you've got a good sense for composition and "camera placing" if you know what i mean.Characters need more attention to anatomy and dynamics tho, but there has been a lot of improvement.
I still think that flat grey BG your pics have makes them less effective than they should, you should try out different techniques more
TheGnoll - thanks for dropping by~! not many do... heheh.
Am working on speed atm. I used to have a bad habit of spending days overworking a piece and never completing it. Or even loosing track of the original intent.
so right now, it's a round brush, with pressure off occasionally, and one colour.
i'm going to put 200 down on "paper" and then shift tracks and work on other stuff.
more mechanical designs in a DSG... counts to the 200?
quick check to see if i could still doodle fast on paper, which i almost never do anymore. 10 mins.

Hey Machzero, really dig the progress youve made here. As others have said, you need to worn on your digital refinement skills, and the human figures need some work. But the mechanical designs have been progressing damn well! Keep it up with the 360 challenge.
holy shit man, you're doing dem machines like they're stick figures for you. simply amazing.
thanks for showing your process too. and no, i'm not hewlett packard
hope you had a good new yrs and xmas ^^
geeez you're a freakin beast man! so many designs.. and as hp said you're just kinda bangin em out like their stick figures lol. nothing to really crit or comment on, just keep up the amazing designs!
Sirio_Brozzi - thanks~! maybe i'll start on 365 human figures for this year... and prolly kill myself in the attempt. heh.
yo hp and Onir~! many thanks for the SSG support!! It's giving me the drive to finish these 200 (roughly a total of 365 since feb 13th last year). It's a little sloppy atm, but once i glance through this folder, instantly get tons of ideas.

yea man thats insane ! some really nice ideas in there :o nice design and it would be ace to see some of them go further !
oh and http://www.medievalfx.com/machzero/graphics/070115a.jpg fuckin rocks totally my sorta thing ! keep it up ur tech rocks
yo Farvus~! Thanks! and there's WIP on several of the quick sketches already. More on that later.
Razorb, thanks! Most of 'em will be tidied up. I was just tossing out ideas as fast as possible, without getting bogged down on a single design. Will commen t on your thread later after i get some sleep. heh.
anyway, had to convert images to links. Did a rough count and there's approximately 550+ images in this thread divided among 4 stupid pages, and it kills web browsers if that many images per page are loaded.
quick DSG... the design's pretty crap, but wanted to see how fast i could improvise accurate perspective lines. About 30 mins.
and final stretch...
to be honest, it was originally a challenge of one design a day from 13th feb 2006 - 2007. Slacked off and it became 200 designs in 30 days. There's another ~160 scattered in previous posts and in actual sketchbooks (it would take a day or two to scan... and i might not get around doing it).
and rather than having 200 POS sketches... the decent ones are being cleaned up now. Here's a sneak peak of 016.
