Hands are annoying as hell. From my own experience, it helps if you both study them intently as Armando said, but it also helps a lot if you try do a few gestures or draw a few quick ones. I think if you do both of them you'll improve quite quickly in that area, at least, it sort of worked for me.

And The colors were actually almost 45 minutes, and really crappy o_o

On the last one, I think the overall color scheme works, but I think her skirt is too saturated, and something is wrong with her skintone, maybe it should have more pink in the shadows/halftones? Don't be afraid to use refs if you have trouble with color. Good luck.

I agree about the skirt colors, and about the skin tones, but I'm not gonna go back and change them because I didnt save the PSD =X

(Above was done in forest green colored pencil, Crayola)

(Above: Bottom in FOrest green, top in sky blue)

(Above: Bottom is a contour in which I didnt look at the paper, just at my hand.)

BTW all these were desaturated. Apparently it greatly reduces the file size. Ctrl+Shift+U in Photoshop.

Nice! Keep it up -- hand studies really pay off. Some of the hand-poses look great, but most of them have that 1st person (yer own hand from yer own eyes) perspective, and I think more 3rd person perspective studies will round off your study time more. Either way, it's great to see so many hand studies in one update.

Btw, that desaturized crayon has a surprisingly interesting texture.

Keep up the great stuff!

In the middle your hand studies are really great. The latest once are not up to the earlier quality. Try ghosting in your lines really light before laying down a dark line. Keep up the studies, it working and it shows

I agree with craig that you should try some more third person hands, try setting up a mirror in front of you when you draw them, I noticed the range of poses in hands are limited without a mirror. Great stuff, keep practicing.

hey pixeldragon!

just dropping in.. it's great to see you posting all these drawings, looks like a lot of perseverence. remember to use straight lines and curves strategically. pay attention to the shapes of things, and what forms they're made out of. draw the simplest forms with the most basic lines first, then go more and more complex. general to specific.

great sketchbook I love the characters you drew near the beginning.

Also I think I have a hand fetish or something so I love to see everyones hand drawings. What is the "new technique" you had tried on that one panel you said you liked? There was a differene in those hands and the others, even the ones after it, so I'm a bit curious

Also, something I just thought of as I looked through and read some. Maybe something to practice for getting a less sketchy line would be follow through? Like in bowling when they tell you to follow through after you release the ball. I never realized it, but its something I started doing subconciously in the beginning to get the shapes, planes, and porportions down recently, maybe it would help?

In any case, I'm really enjoying the progress you are making and being able to see it! keep up the good work and take care.

In case you haven't tried it yet. A cool thing to do when drawing your hand in a mirror, is to draw your hand as it appears to you in front of your face, and also as it appears in the mirror. It gives you a greater understanding of the pose and you get to draw both right and left hands.

Nice. Getting the feel of the hands. Much better.

Try longer lines tho. Spend more time on the shading!

A few pointers to aid in your development:

When you're shading using lines, as in your latest hand studies, you would do better to lift the pencil between each line. When you mark in one direction it defines a flow. However, when you draw the pencil back to the top in the other direction, you're going to break that flow, thus making the image more flat and less structured. Lifting your pencil keeps the form much more deliberate and keeps you from being lazy. I however, still do the 'zig-zag' shading sometimes so I'm not much to talk =]

Keep up the good work!

Damn your commitment is inspiring. I've criticized the hell out of myself many times for all the time I wasted when I was in highschool. I could have been studying art. One of the things I regret the most is all the figure work I could have done in class. I wasn't listening any way, so I could have been drawing heads, faces and gestures, and since you know all those people it's not as weird as staring at complete strangers in public places. If the teacher doesn't like you sketching them just say, "This is the way I remember." I don't know if you've tried that yet, but most of the students will like the portraits.

Most of my teachers dont like my sketching in class, because they dont think I pay attention, even though I'm usually the most attentive kid in class...

And commitment will be next summer in Precollege at Ringling... And have you seen MindCandyMan's progress? It's awe inspiring.

I really think you're going the right way with those hand studies, try studying something else though. Just to throw some variety into the mix you could try making things out of the contour of your hand. I think I'm going to get started in an acrylics painting class in a few months, you should try to get classes.

In school at the moment I have Advanced Photoshop (Cause my teacher skipped me past beginners PS), Drawing 2 (Teacher is a horrendous artist) Painting (Awesome teacher) and sculpture (Same teacher as painting).

I'm getting a farily wide variety. I think if anything I need to practice heads and feet and cloth more.

Your still in high school right! You bastard, I wish my high school had those classes, our 'Fine Arts' department is more music oriented, though not that that's bad I'm in Music Thoery right now. I wish we had a better visual arts department.

Our VA department is totally crappy though. Painting is probably the only class worth taking, and maybe sculpture now. Our school is more Theatre/Music oriented though, out of 1000 odd kids, 6-12 grades, I am one of maybe 12 serious visual artists, and maybe one of 6 who is dedicated to it. The other 6 are all just anime artists who think they know it all.

2 of the 'dedicatees'- I actually got them into studying the principles and stuff, another is just really awesome, another thinks he's better than he is, and tries to be stylistic, and one isn't really in our "Group" but he's definatley unique and has his own awesome spin about stuff. Oh, and there is a seventh, but she's all artsy fartsy- I mean, she's good, but biased about things and has a somewhat concieted attitude twoard everyone. Oh, and there is an eight, but she isn't as popular as any of the other mentioned ones. She's not incredible or anything, but she's worth mentioning because she's serious about it.

The owl is nice, his/her head should be slightly smaller and higher. I think you could have blocked in areas of the neck and wings more broadly, without the white spots (that aren't in the ref) but otherwise I think you did a good job, keep it up!

you are very talented for your age, i drew like you when i was 20 or something... so you're gonna go places for sure !

some critique i have :

1. lift up your pencil when you crosshatch or shade... dont just let it slide up and down in "waves", controll them... it will give a much more confident feeling and it forces you to draw them more correctly instead of just "up-and-down-shaky-moves"... try to find some tutorials in the apropriete(sp?) section here at CA.org about crosshatching...

2. Use 2 pencils, one that is always sharpened and one that you lay down and shade with... use the sharpend one to define areas...use hard lines where its needed.... in example, if you press the indexfinger against the F.U finger the line between them are darker than the folds on your knuckels (sp?) and finger joints... try to balance them (lights/darks), find the darkest area on your hand and compare it to your drawings... what i am trying to say is take controll, as much as you can and push that wall each time you draw...

look, look, draw, look, look, draw...

/rant

cheers man, you're taking major strides!
