blanquish - many thanks - I'm not sure I'd have any watercolor tips that can't be found in the basic wc books, but I can certainly outline what it is that I do.

entroid - well said. there's no black there, but if it's too dark, it ends up as black anyhow I suppose . your crits on the contrast jump in the shadow areas w/ the wc and the texture on the label are spot on and I appreciate it. btw, i've been crazy-impressed with your works lately and mean to stop lurking and start commenting on your thread

i decided to do a birds across mediums and styles sort of personal challenge. so, that's why there's a disjointed assortment of stuff. here goes:
I was impressed with a floral from Susan Dorothea’s book, Draw Like Da Vinci. I tried her technique, using a pastel pencil in place of the goldpoint
brown-headed cowbird, 4×5 pastel and charcoal on ink-stained hot press paper
a goldfinch in the blue, the basics, and the render
5×7 White-Throated Sparrow in colored pencil on hot press watercolor paper
a great egret à la Bell. It’s mine, but I did it in (to whatever degree of success) the general style of Andrew Bell’s stuff
in my xmas stocking (yes, I'm sure I'm too old for that), I found a teeny tiny canvas and a little egg-shaped rock. So, I did a teeny tiny acrylic painting of the teeny tiny rock and placed it on a terrible tiny easel.
a colored pencil in the general style of Hikaru Nakano -- 5×7 colored pencil on hot press watercolor paper
Cedar Waxwing, Acrylic 9×12
a mockingbird in the style of Sonny Liew. I imagine that I should have done it in pencil and then colored the pencil lines digitally in order to get his particular sketchy style, but I felt like using pens.
playing around with a quick sp from an older non-beard photo
scrap of hot-press watercolor paper that I didn't want to waste
quick illo for a local paper. btw, that funky structure is the bandshell near the possible site of a proposed farmers market -— the rim towards the front has an upturn, making it look deformed in rl and in the drawing
a side-character for a webcomic-ish project I’ll never get around to completing. In other words, this probably isn’t going anywhere, but I might use it as a prelim to paint or properly render.
another super-quick illo for a local paper - the story was on school salaries and I had less than an hour to come up with and send something along

The palette, the loose lines, are so effective and they look SO good. Some harder brushes wouldn't hurt though.

And you really really need to start using some eye-hurting colors every once in a while Too many browns and grays here...

idiot apathy - I could throw something together, but really, once I was able to no-ref a simplified bird skel and feel confident that it sort of resembled the real thing, birds made for an easy subject afterwards. for what it's worth, I'll see if I can put together a bird/watercolor demo. Really though, the trick is that birds are very forgiving. people notice when figures are 'off,' but it's harder for the eye to detect that with a bird it's a forgiving subject

I really like the paper illo, I think the medium and the color choices both fit perfectly with the subject matter.
I like the sketch on this last one, the colored version not so much. I think you might be needing more orange-ish saturation on your midtones and not so cold and dark shadows, cause now those purples look a bit like bruises. Elbows, fingers, toes, knees and nose could use a bit of pink as well.
That painting on your hand is really cool!

Looked all the way through - great progress and loads of great work. Love the variety and the focus on life drawing as a basis. I'd like to see some more landscapes from imagination to complement your figures. I like the gesture pages where i can't really tell what's going on - do some of that from imagination, fill your sketchbook with whatever, expiriment! Keep up the good work, looking forward to more. - I wish i had your kind of patience -_-;

Last one is nice, blue leads look great.
The only thing I can crit is the arm is really lumpy, like the bone is sticking out.
the last newspaper illo is great, like how you nandles the colours and the ink bottle looks spot on.
entroid - thx ent. you're right about that colored thing -- I rarely look much at the work of other artists, and when I do, I usually do a piss-poor job of integrating their methods into my own work. anyhow, it didn't look as planned, but I'll get it next time.

I started a new toned fabriano sketchbook today. Here’s an edge of the woods sketch from during lunch today.
i think I'm posting now just to procrastinate from the earth day illo I should be working on.
This is running along with an Earth Day story/press release. The mountain range (hills really) is Sleeping Giant nearby in Hamden, CT. The lake and man-made waterfall are local as well. Really, the expanse would be filled with blacktop, apartments, and chain restaurants, but that's not at all what I like about Hamden.

I was going to start working on the mid-ground since I barely touched it, but I'd already taken too long and it looked decent enough when resized.
Last night I watched the Carlos Huante gnomon vid. Once he had the basic forms down with some selective detail and value, he splashed alcohol on a cotton square and rubbed out the colored pencil sketch. He then lifted out the lights with an electric eraser and reapplied the darks. From there he used the mid-tone to help him carve out a creature. I tried out essentially the same technique, but I did make use of a white cp as needed.
I apologize for the marker tree there. This started out on my scrap page of marker paper — I didn’t expect to go anywhere with it, but the technique felt comfortable enough to keep me going. I also didn’t expect the cp to be so forgiving (in terms of getting things down), but when you wash out the light lines using the alcohol, it cleans it right up.

Girl and owl are beautiful - love pulling out whites like that, but never thought of using alcohol. Love the earthy tones in the forest sketch and the more light hearted feel of the earth day thing. The composition bugs me a little - it is all pushing in so much it makes me feel crowded - of course if you want that its fine but if you want to go for a more peaceful look i think maybe pushing back the hills with some atmos. perspective and pushing them to the edges a little more might add some depth and open it up a little, Just an idea.
Heh, i actually like the marker tree - with the little figure underneath. - kind of mirrors the girl on a smaller scale. Keep up the good work.
fishspawn - thanks man. you're right about the comp -- i did want to go for a cramped unrealistic sort of landscape since the run-sized version would be small and well, that sort of thing, but as I worked on it I made it more and more developed so I should have brough in more traditional lanscape elements as I developed what was supposed to be pretty simple. And, I kinda like the tree there as well, it hides what would have been the hand

i used a soldering gun and some sandpaper to repair my stylus (4th or 5th time I suppose). so, here's a navel line-up carved-out in painter
I know, exciting stuff.
Berberis thunbergii before the last of the berries fall off and spring begins. There's one growing in my front yard. It's considered an invasive exotic species. I have no idea how the berries manage to stay attached all winter, but it takes quite a bit of wear before they lose their shine, dry up, darken, and fall.
Apparently, http://www.navelmaniac.com/ actually exists. I spent a half-hour doing quick button studies off of their refs. I think I have the navel thing out of my system now
Really, I'm past the navel fixation, but in the interest of purging, here's a random imaginary button and my gf's using alcohol washes over marker
