Topic: Fungal Beast

Round Requirements (Read BEFORE Voting!):
- The creature must be in some way comprised of, or function as host organism to, fungal growths
- The creature’s relationship to fungi should be symbiotic (i.e. beneficial to both parties)
- The fungus should either comprise at least 50% of the creature (or if the creature is the host for the fungus, the fungus’ total size should be at least 50% the size of the creature)

Concept: Dalkin: One With The Swamp
Uses the fungus growing on his hide to camouflage himself, making him a great hunter of the swamp. The conditions of his hide make a great breeding ground for fungus growing in the swamp.

Concept: Anthozoa Cetacea
The Anthozoa Cetacea is a sight to behold. This massive sea-beast is by far the largest living organism discovered in the history of mankind. How can this goliath grow to such astounding magnitudes?
The secret lies within a symbiotic relationship with a special coral fungus. The fungi spores attach themselves to the creature's soft ridge, when it passes by coral reefs. The ridge acts as a potent growing ground for the fungi, which burrow their roots deep into the spine of the creature.
The Anthozoa Cetacea provides the fungi protection from changing conditions, as it seeks relatively shallow and warm waters. The fungi, on the other hand, provide the creature a share of the energy they gather from the sun, allowing both to grow into astoundingly large measurements.
If the adolescent Anthozoa Cetacea doesn't meet the fungus, it wont grow past twenty feet.
This creature is a reptile that has its body covered in poisonous fungus as a means of protection. It eats types of weeds and fungus. It can stay in the same area for a long time because it releases spores from its body to make more food for itself. Its habitat is usually the swamp where its food is plentiful.

Concept: Bleeding Heart Spider
When the spider is able to walk, it finds the bleeding tooth fungus and rubs against the fungi to transfer it to its back. Once mature, the spider is able to puncture the large jelly-filled spores which ooze down and drop to the ground. Insects are attracted to the jelly and because of the spiders' height; he is able bend down and attack its prey. Its eyes and mouth are on the underside of its belly.
A little flying beast roaming through a eclectic and psychodelic kingdom, where he happily takes advantage of the fungal fluids floating through his body and in return spreads the spores as far as possible.

Concept: Red Schenour
The Red Schenour is a peaceful creature which lives in swamps. Because of its numerous predators, it has a symbiotic relationship with the fungus covering its body. The Red Schenour provides food to the fungus through its circulatory system and the fungus add a neurotoxin to the Red Schenour blood, making it venenous for all its predators. The red colors in its body work as a warning.

Concept: The River Walker
The river walker uses its affliction of the red mushroom fungal infection
Not only for increased size to scare away predators but to attract prey,
it also fishes, with the help of the toxin excreted
from the fungus. In turn providing the fungus with nutrients from surrounding areas
helping the fungi to breed and grow unchecked.

Concept: Greater Fungal Stalker
The greater fungal stalker is the alpha predator of the Dikaryan Sea. This ocean of fungus creates a thick atmosphere of spores in which only highly specialised creatures can survive. Like all creatures of the Dikaryan, the fungal stalker navigates the ocean using a personalised cloud of spores. These spores released from the shaking stalker's tail antennae and interact with the surrounding environment. The information is relayed back to the stalker through the tubular receptors on the front four legs. The spore cloud of the stalker has mild paralytic qualities, which slow down any grazing myceanopes unfortunate enough to be caught in it.
Concept: Fungal Hound
Fungal hounds are tripodal, bi-tailed fungal/animal fusions; arising from a symbiosis of the two it represents an entirely separate branch of creatures. The fungal portions of the creatures completely account for all neural functions; reflexes, decision making, sight and other senses, as well as filling most digestive and respiratory functions. The animal portions account for all muscular functions. Light detecting "eyes" sprout from the creature on stalks, which can be replaced as needed. The frontal facial array senses movement and heat, as well as chemical traces (smell and taste). This creature is liquivorous, feeding on the vital fluids of its prey after using its potent venom to kill them.
Fungal hounds use three legs for locomotion; the hind leg is powerful and allows the creature to leap in almost any direction from a standing position. The two front appendages are used for balance and are also used to assist when running. They are also somewhat dactyl and can be used to tear into prey.
Two tails give the creature great balance during rapid turns and leaps. Small spines on the tails can be used for defense, but are primarily used for mating. All members of the species are capable of lodging spines in the flesh of other members of the same species in an act of procreation, but typically only the pack Alpha is allowed to do so lest they risk being killed in retribution. The spines, if lodged in the flesh of another fungal hound, will swell and feed upon the host much like a parasite, but unlike a parasite it also samples the host's DNA and blends it with its own to create a zygote. A fetus then begins to grow within the spine, forming a cyst. Once the cyst has swollen fully and the embryo within reached sufficient maturity, the cysts split open and the young emerge.
If the spines are lodged in the flesh of any other species, they will swell and become inflamed and very painful. Eventually the creature will either dig the spine out or possibly die from infection, thus the spines are an effective deterrent to larger predators.
It is thought that this manner of reproduction evolved so that the fungal DNA may be passed along during mating as well as the animal DNA; however, only the impregnating creature's fungal DNA is passed on in this manner, thus preserving the fungal ancestry along the Alpha member's genetic lineage.

The fungal beast. A sorry sight in its early stages of evolution, half starved and small in size these current behemoths wandered the dark caves in search for food.
Beeing highly reliant on their eyes the lack of light caused problems for the creature.
It was only when exposed to the spores of the luminous fungi and glowing fungus started growing in the dead skin, left behind by routinley molting outer layers of its skin, the creature that the beast was able to start dominating the food chain.
Carrying its small garden of glowing mushrooms around on its back the Torchback now excells in catching its prey, luring it with light and then striking with high speed.

It is hard to determine whether the Mycolian is actually a fungus or animal, as it displays characteristics typical of both kingdoms. 90% of this creature's body has become composed of fungus, including it's nervous system. It relies on using a sporous sac located on it's head to deliver a cloud of poisonous spores as a means of either attack or defense.
The mycocanth is a solitary species. Slowly trundling from one end of the Boasian jungle to the other, the beast will feed on decaying flora and fauna. The beast begins it's life as a small, fungus-covered egg, the poisons in the fungus keeping scavengers from eating them before they're even born. Upon hatching, they live a treacherous life. Their soft, damp hide and slow-moving nature makes them excellent targets for predators. The mycocanth will, over the first five years of its life, begin to cultivate Platea fungi on they're moist backs and legs, slowly excreting nutrient-rich fluid to keep the fungi alive. The Platea fungus serves a dual purpose. The first, and most important is that it causes the mycocanth to become extremely poisonous, eliminating it as a viable food source upon reaching maturity. The second is that it the fully formed Platea trigger a hormone which cause the mycocanth to grow two of its own fungi into the Platea. Firstly it will begin to grow long protrusive spore-rich fungi, called Antherum, and smaller, blue, pod-like mushroom clusters, called Stamera. This signifies sexual maturity, whereupon the Antherum will release clouds of sperm spores into the air. The mycocanth will collect other spores in their Stamera, which will eventually grow into an egg, which the mycocanth will then abandon. The mycocanth will generally live 10 years after reaching sexual maturity, whereupon the Platea have usually grown to such a degree that the mycocanth can no longer move, becoming a fungus formation which young mycocanths can harvest Platea spores from.
The Snuk lives in various tropical rain forests and is normally found in small groups (2-4) to make hunting easier. Snuks secrete nutrients through sweat glands and their long fur holds in moisture to facilitate fungal growth. They feed on animals that are tempted by the mushrooms, and their most substantial prey is the wild boar when they are able to get them.

Concept: Fungal Creature (I suck at coming up with names)
This little creature lives in the trees of sub-tropical forests. It has a fungus living in it's tail, which produces it's fruiting body during the dry season. The fungus attracts insects, which get caught inside it's lattice like structure. The animal then fishes out and eats the insects with it's two claw-tipped appendages. Being able to disperse it's spores during the dry season gives the fungus an advantage over other fungi, as they require the moisture brought on by the rainy season to fruit.
Since the fungus takes care of attracting food, the animal has more time an energy to spend on reproduction. The reproductive cycles of the animal and the fungus are matched up so that once the rainy season starts, the spores dispersed on the forest floor produce a small, red mushroom that the newborn animals eat. This is how they acquire the fungus, which will live inside the animal for the entirety of it's life. Once the rainy season starts, the animals will eat the fungus off of their tails, in order to recycle the calories. These creatures are semi-social and have been observed consuming the fungus from other individuals, always close relatives.
The fungus lies dormant inside the animal until the next dry season.
Concept: The Red Capped Larg
This worm like creature spends most of it's life within an underground burrow only surfacing for moisture for which it needs for it's fungus. Although it is completely blind and cannot hunt, it gets most of it's nutrients from it's back fungus. When the mating time arrives, it will resurface and the fungus on it's back release spores which makes attracting a mate a much easier task.
As artists, we have to learn to see.
Concept: Spore Spreader
A mischievous but but lovable little beast that roams the dark forests of Shindranoth, his spore spreads from his ports and his love for the fungus makes him and his kind the masters of all things that grow underfoot in this seedy world.

Everyone else, just ask me if you want crits, although I'm probably not the most qualified person to give them. I gotta say this week's topic was a difficult one to do well.
I didn't have time to finish the piece but I'll contribute what I got so far lol.
&kor: Got my vote as it really said fungus to me, though I wish you'ld posed it better. The current position is a bit on the drab side

Si_Swe: Cool design. But quite a flat image, I think some stronger light and contrast with some rim and bounce light to help define the edges would really bring out the best in your work
Patonki: Nice but in no way looks finished to me
Ex Nihilo: This is lovely but to me it looks a little muddy and blured. I think you could afford to make things sharper, pick a more exciting angle and creat some atmospheric distance between the two beasts (I nearly mistyped breasts there) Also there seems to be a lack of cast shadow which would really help to tie them to the environment

Post 3. My concern is with the creature going through water his fungus would constantly be weathered.
Post 8. The lizard is non-functional.
All others I have no critics.
Then I would say the attechments of the legs would be visible on the "rim" of the body. Or you would show a little protrusion where the arms are under the body.
It was full of great entries this round, my favorites were &kor, Edward B, Si Swe, Scorge... it is difficult to choose since there are so many good works.
Some thoughts on the entries:
Absorber not a bad idea, a fungal insect is rarely seen.
&Kor nice design, good way to construct a fungal body, I have to agree with GEB about the pose.
Eclectix really love the head of your creature and the 2 tails, maybe the mammal-(reptilian?)-fungal relationship is showed in a strange way, it doesnīt connect very well in my opinion.
Edward B, amazing execution, maybe I miss a bit more risky design. Spores have a quick way to grow and expand, so itīs a bit strange to see them only in the back zone. (and a bit in the arm)The lighting effect is great and I really love the head rendering.
Rob Powell I like the design overall, maybe iīm not sure about the movement capabilities of the creature cause of those linear fungi layers along the body. The creature seems very active but those layers can make the body looks stiff. The poisonous spores cloud is a great addition, btw.
Si Swe the design is spot on, itīs really Fungal. Maybe the lighting could be pushed a bit more like GEB said. I also noticed there are no fungi in the surroundings, maybe adding more of them, the creature could be more integrated with its environment.
Ex Nihilo, great atmosphere. You didnīt risk much with your design but the environment treatment really benefits the whole image.
Scorge great execution as always, the design is original and weird as hell!
