Being (now thankfully) humbled by the standard of work on ConceptArt.org I'm trying to learn the basics...
Random speed paintings.

I like the first character sketch, very nice environments.

Cheers! Would really like to go back to some tighter pieces, but very busy with projects at the mo. Quick speedpainting from last night again with a mouse. Think I'll do more of these - they really help.
..reason for the speed paintings is I've been doing them on the night shift, don't have a tablet whilst there and just using GIMP with a mouse.
Really messed this one up and the values got screwed, adding pointless detail when I should have kept it basic concentrated on the composision and done many more of them. Should have kept that for the tablet work.
I quite like the idea though, these huge big mechanical ships emerging from the river, city at war. Think I'll work this idea into a full paint when I get chance (but with a more dynamic viewpoint)
Went back to basics. Another quicky from last night, ran out of time, so will spend a little more on this tonight. Few more mid ground elements and a splash of colour.
Put a little montage together for this past year, its pretty much a scrapbook affair, but hopefully I will get down to creating some much tighter work for a compilation for 2012.
Not exactly a speed painting, took a couple of hours, but using GIMP, Mouse & unplanned.
As a side note, I've now started blogging my work (plan to turn it into a portfolio once I have enough work of standard). Please feel free to take a look and critique away http://www.digilocker.co.uk
some pretty cool concepts in the making, i think some obvious benefits would be some more anatomical studies, and also sometimes u randomly throw in big lines in your speedpaintings, thats cool but i think u shud be careful, some stand out a mile and distract from the overall piecee..
A couple of other experimental paints I forgot to put in..
Eden City: This one was overworked and underplanned, but was eager to try out my new tablet. I wasn't sure of the content so played about with it too much, but hopefully learnt a fair bit in the process, mainly - if you're gonna spend hours tightening it up make sure you at least spend an hour planning & exploring thumbs & content. Its a lot harder to change things about as things tighten up.
Angel Creek: No planning either on this one, but was quite a speedy paint and after the pains of the previous paint decided to leave this loose and move on.
A few recent bits..
(captured this one)

I love everything in here !
Many thanks for your comments I'm 29 reside in Calderdale West Yorks, England - self taught through tuts on the web, and I started painting around 18 months ago. Previous to that I've mainly worked with 3D and the odd sketch.

Clearing out some files, a few speedpaints I wasn't keen on but didn't want to delete, so added a few things last night. Still don't really like them. I like the Mozlar setting, may do a cleaner repaint of that setting at some point.
