Could someone explain to me how i could take a texture from a rock face and turn it into a smooth consistent brush? I have been messing around with it for a little while now and it hasn't come close to resembling the example brush.
-How do i turn that texture into a smooth brush?
-How would i keep it from doing that overlapping opacity feature?
-How can i make the edges more natural.. instead of some hard solid edge?
you can tell in the example brush that its not perfect, you can just barely see little edges from the original square or rectangle it was originally copied from, but its really subtle.. and the texture inside of it is smooth and continual; whereas mine is just a block painted again and again.
Go into the brush properties and there's a setting called "spacing" that'll make it smoother. If you want to change the edges, either combine it with another brush (again, in the brush properties) or edit the edges in the actual brush file.

Post the image you want to turn into a brush.
I'd recommend using only a sliver of the size that you had used and then lower the spacing so it's consistent. Opacity properties can be controlled in the transfer tab. You can also just take any brush and then add the texture to it.
Desaturate the image. Play with the levels till you get a nice contrast going on for the brush and clean up the edges with white so that the brush you make does not have sharp rectangular egdes.
Edit-> Save brush preset
Open the brush properties and experiment with spacing, rotation, scattering, dual brush etc. The example you posted looks like it has a dual brush setting with some sort of scratchy-line brush.
If you have a really large texture with enough detail you can just make it tileable and save it as a pattern to use with your brushes ( load it in the brush window's texture section).
Edit: Here's a quick version of what the tweaked image could look like. You can try out the Photoshop settings on this once you turn it into a brush.

I'm pretty sure that brush u are looking at in the original post is a dual brush. I'm not sure. I'll try and replicate it a little bit later and see if that's what it is, but im pretty sure it's a long and skinny brush alpha set to angle jitter, dual brushed into a simple square brush with angle settings to direction.
Anyway... i'll see if i can remake it. (to be continued!)
(an alternate way to good way to get rock textures into brush from directly from a rock texture is to just get a good contrasty picture of a rock face, then invert the image, and do a somewhat soft selection of the area you want to capture into a brush and capture it. I usually invert it, cause most of the time i want the highlights, not the shadows of the rock, so i can paint in the lighting using the rock texture brush)
