Some more heads
Here's a character im working on, not too clear til i add values. it was for the chow world fighter but ive not got time
awesome character Alex! love the linework, its very clean and precise, but dont hesitate to vary the line weights some. even at this stage it could help to add more dimension to the image. even though, you probably wont make the chow deadline, you should still finish this up! it looks great!
Hey Alextooth, heres some example of what I meant by planes,
Good place for the head in planes at different angles
Also be sure to read the stuff about planes in the Loomis books!
What is a plane? A plane is a flat surface basically
The point is to find and add these planes give your drawing a sense of volume and depth and to give your drawing the illusion that it were in 3d space.
Planes will also allow you to easier distinguish where to place your lights and your shadows.
Think of constructing a head like constructing a building or any other structure...
If you have ever modeled something in 3d or even sculpted, you would basically start with a very primitive object, such as a square for instance and add or cut out edges to sculpt out the planes. Basically it is just constructing something in a geometrical fashion.
heres an example in 3d:
Although it's a little different in drawing the approach is somewhat similar.
Also another thing you can study are the loops of the face... This is another 3d example but I believe it also applies to drawing. What are the loops of the face? Heres some examples I could find. These aren't the best examples but I think they give you the general idea of what I mean:
These loops will help you feel the form of the face... Look at your face in the mirror
and try to find the simple loops that make your facial features. Like the loop around one eye to the other
or for instance the loop starting from one eyebrow going to the other eyebrow, going under the eyes and above the nose, or
the loop that goes around your mouth area and so on...
You do all these things so you can fully understand the object you are working on, in this case heads. Ahh, but of course, theres also tons of other things to be tried and learned. These are just a few things I think you can benefit from and remember you can use these things on any object not only a head! Anyways keep it up brah!! Lovin that last piece!

great head studies Alex~! always good to see you working hard. gah! just about all the sub'd sketchbooks i've been looking at today are doing head studies haha, gonna need to get around to that myself. keep at it bro!
Sup Alex! Nice progress man! I'm checking your progress every time.
I remember that you said on Dave's stream that you have problems with heads and he said "you are always working hard so there is no reason you wouldn't improve".
And progress can be seen
also thanks to agelaos for usefull post
Hey bro, wish I could have one of your bad days, that would be like one of my best days, LOL! =)
Faces aren't looking too bad considering, through the hazey merrirment of ale, not too shabby if you ask me! =)
Character design totally makes up for it though, can't wait to see this beauty coloured.. have fun with it!
man, some of these face studies are so damn awesome!
Wow man! Love the rhythm in that latest character. Can't wait to see you flesh it out.
Either you decide to stay in CA or move on keep in touch OK?
I got a suggestion for your head studies, slow down with the heads from imagination and work more on your construction because quantity is not always the best thing and most of your heads are not convincing.
pay close attention to distance and size relations between all of the features of the face until you feel you start to notice problems when you draw something from head. when you notice problems you ask questions and then you answer them by going to reference and that's when you progress, drawing 1000 heads from head(I suppose its from head?) is a good practice once you got the foundations really stamped in your mind.
My suggestions try by starting with 200 heads from reference, magazines self portrait etc... that's what I do and it helps ^_^
Good luck bro
Hey bro!! Don't go.. come back! People have said sorry, people make mistakes sometimes..
Yeah, Danny has some decent advice here, draw in a few lines to keep things to remind yourself sometimes and keep you from drifting..
Keep well bro and hopefully you come back, have fun with your next things. =)
yo mate i understand how you feel.I also felt strange that period.
I just thought for a while and realized that we are also an important part of the site and something separate from its marketing side, something free and powerful. We are here pushing more new people that start their artistic journeys, we all help eachother and encourage each other.Ofcourse if CA was to become a no-free site it would lose a lot of people and lose power.Anyway enough words.Keep up training wherever you are
Fantastic stuff, really well rendered and inspirational work.
Love the Robotic Golem from the first page, with the blend of ancient and futuristic.
Double Thumbs up!!!
thanks for dropping by my SB
your studies are looking great and the last piece is so clean, great to see that
Those heads are excellent, very well drawn and constructed. As for critiques, I would say work more on the more dynamic angles of the head, as you seem to be handling the 'easier' views with great ease. The character concept you posted is excellent, great lines and composition there.
I can't see any of your studies T.T
Why for you no post no mores?
My observational skills may be great but i said nothing about my drawing skills
