I agree with hp, if you can get some of those edges to look like they curve round rather than end abruptly that could help loads methinks. Keep at it... go go go!!!! (when your back of course)
Hahah, the Dean eh?!?!?! What shall I call u then?
Dean: Yea i agree, but i dont really want to go back too it :< besides i have a new bad enviro you can comment on.
So got back yesterday after visiting SCAD Atlanta and SCAD Savannah and touring Savannah, which was nice. Anyway here is updates sorry for the "dead thread", forgive me :u
ah yes 1st one is a bad enviro again -- i really need to stop making the distance darker, i always seem to do that.. other 3 are mostly speed paints the first two took about 50 minutes combined and the last one was about an hour long. --all life
Thought you disappeared from the face of the Earth, Jack.
The enviro is looking better, good on ye! If the distance is looking dark at the end, I guess you can play with some of the adjustment layers and mask out the distance and turn down the contrast a tad and then maybe repaint over it again.
Still life is looking good too! Welcome back Bob!
jatherip: Thanks! I will do more life paintings and this that and the other thing soooo many things i need to do! ~~~;;~;;~>:U
glaud: Yea, thanks! im still doing the 100 day thing, now its just basically working allot more then i did before!
Dean: Hehe yea thanks, i dont like it, i'll get better though also i already explained where i was like 3 times for you x) anyway thanks for stopping by dean. Hmm give me a creative name, bob just in'st enough
Did some UFC studies
Last edited by Krato; October 14th, 2009 at 01:11 AM.
Im gonna call you Brock cause you watch UFC, how bout that? Or maybe Tennis-ball-head?!?
The studies are looking good. Maybe work on the edges but these are quick so I'll let you off there
dy. - Thanks! I hope im on the right track too :u
hp - thanks! hopefully they will be allot better by the end of this
DEAN: hehe thanks, yea it was a quick sketch so you can really crit the edges :p the first guy eye was to bright oh well.. Brock? lol, maybe B-rock or something creative like that
So first one is a life i did today the lighting changed so fast so its about 30% imagination, second is a ref free concept and its awful, oh well back to focusing on studies 100% agian, thinking about doing more ufc or model paintings

sorry no picture updates, i did studies but im not going to upload becuase i hate scanning things... anyway i tried doing another imaginitive piece but it turns out like shit every time i try to do something.. I dont know.. its pretty demoralizing :/
seriously though im not doing any more imaginative stuff (on photoshop) its f--king retarded i find it so difficult trying to paint a complete concept on photoshop, it seems like everything i knew about anatomy just falls out the window.
clearly im pissed off and tired so instead of a picture(s) you get a rant today ......
idk what should i do? .. plus im getting bored with this thing and the other thing..

hey, upload this stuff anyway the main issue with this thing are the eyes, i think! was it your intention to make them look blind? whatever, keep at it
btw i get my reference from google and deviantart. with google you should use the options for large size and faces, this will make the results really cool!
maybe try starting a piece in ps from ref and as the basic lighting or whatever is solid then just doodle on top of it on your own.
Hey man, don't get annoyed. Just keep painting, it will only help.
Try focusing on edges too, almost all of your edges are hard, which makes it harder to get it looking real.
perhaps start with a pencil scetch. then go on in photoshop. First time i ever used photoshop, i was just scanning livedrawn pieces to the PC and then painting them. And now i feel more comfort starting from blank digital 800*800. Expirience is everything. Besides you have so many digital drawing, i can't even understand why are you having such a problem))
Here's how i started back in 2007
Just push forward with your skill, man! you can do it.
Dont worry man, everyone has to start somewhere! Each bad drawing you do is one more under your belt and one bad drawing less that you have to do in reaching your goal. So you'll have to draw through the bad drawings and get them out of the way to get to the good stage!
Maybe like ppl suggested, find some reference and maybe refer to it loosely, it can be pretty hard to paint without a clear direction. Go go go!!!!
Pixie: Thanks, well this sketchbook is less then a month old (?) and i started seriously drawing about 10 months ago, i did allot of broad studies so.. im no master at anything instead im decent at everything, eventually though i hope to switch that around.
Dy. : Thanks! i hope soo!
Jatherip: Yea i didnt want him to look blind, oh well, i dont really care about it , I thought you got your pictures from some other website because they just seemed more artsy.. Like that nude girl with the shadows all over her on your latest page.
Hp: Thats an interesting way to do it, but i don't think its really for me. :/ however using refs really does help with pics
Fraser: Thanks! I'm learning more about edges so they should get better soon.
arri-att: Yea i used to do that but i just can't stand it.. hehe, my sketches tended to be lopsided or something since i dont have a flip canvas feature for my paper .
Lieutenant Benson: Yea i know what your sayings its all sorta a confidence thing.. i have noticed that with all my stuff. And your absolutely right i really need to do more planning before hand. I used to just go straight to plopping down colors. Well, for the first REFFREE picture with the guy in armor i planned out what i wanted him to be doing and then drew a sketch (my line control is sooo much better then the last time i did that). The second one though i just wanted to paint a goblin.
Ah, ok so long story i woke up this morning with killer allergies and went to school regardless, in gym class we had to run the mile for the quarter grade, i ran it in 8min30secs and it took me about an hour to recover.. FF after school i came home, my allergies were (and still are) really bad.. plus i picked up a bug (illness) or something for running a mile outside in 45degree temp so i came home and slept.. from 4-9 and well spent from 11pm-6am painting so i'm not sure what my schedule is going to be like tomorrow since i might be sleeping through it :I... anyway here are the paintings!
--plus a metal song i like
Both pictures are reference free
+ thanks for the support guys it really does help

lol, when i saw these last two ones i was shocked....lol, awesome, yes it HEEELLPPS!
to the first one: design is cool, looks a bit "oldschool" or whatever, but perhaps you wanted it! lighting technical looks awesome, how about a darker background (i read this in a tutorial...wait...this!: klick for awesome tutorial!
i think it would be cool to add blue backlight ( i guess its personal preference, but its cool anyway )
btw thanks for adding me to your signature!
keeep it up, man!
I agree with jatherip, those unreffed paintings are awesome. I dig the second one especially. Definitely keep doing imagination stuff in between studies.
First one is looking good, you could prob have the backlighting to gradually defuse so it goes round the form more. Remember the sphere exercise?!?
The goblin head is looking good too. But watch the nose's perspective!
Hehe, liking the track u put on too! Not bad not bad!
Jatherip: Thanks! the link didnt work, as i get better i will try different, less technical approaches. Yea i was thinking about blue backlight too, but i felt that what i had was good enough and i already had to many colors
Bombur: Thanks! I may just do that
Bendragon: Yea i made it diffuse somewhat and with the regards to the goblin nose i knew something was wrong with it, oh well, ill make sure i dont mess that up next time. Glad you like the track i might put something up next time too then.
Ok so finished the soldier concept and did a life study, will post more studies in a few hours!
can you post a wip of some of these studies? thanks! it would help a lot!
i think you could push the form a bit in the center area of your soldier, otherwise good stuff!
ben: hehe yea, i think the studies should out number the free stuff though.
hp: Thanks, yea here is a quick study i could have done better oh well the point gets across. Basically i frst just set up the base colors and then work from there.
Not sure i will be able to post too much stuff tomorrow, i have allot of school stuff to do.
man, this concept came out really niccee! think about a more intrestint post though (well....next time )
btw: was that you, the first guy to comment on daarkens new tutorial?
btw no2: man, thats embarrasing D: my english sucks
actually i dont know what "krato" should mean!? i think its the main character from the computer game "god of war"....
Jatherip: Thanks, i will make a more interesting pose next time... i need to learn how to paint skin and understand anatomy better though, and yes.
i was joking that you should know what it means but yea its a german last name and my german is worse ! :C
Ok update, its same as before i moved the feet around a little to make it a little less weird looking ( I hope). Well, im gonna do anatomy studies on paper so i'm not sure if i will submit them to CA. :<
Yep, those feet are looking less stiff now. Also, think about those red spikes on his back, where are they attaching themselves to and how are they attached there. If its on his spine, the perspective is a bit off. Imagine it like a thin slice of a cuboid that is attached to his back, maybe define the top surface of the cuboid (if that makes sense, its prob easier if I drew it for u instead)
