Neat subject! I'm glad I'll get to show progress and take crits earlier this time around. I can't believe some people are already almost finished!
Oh no! Here comes George Washington! AND HE LOOKS PISSED!
I was once on the receiving end of a critique so savagely nasty, I marched straight out of class to the office and changed my major (sketchbook).
matt dixon: i liked all but second got a new look!!!
dwinbotp: metal things seems painfull, give it a second thought!
yongs: wu hu thats a scary one!
Wiggers: metal coiled hairs? the hiding one seems like an adult rather than kid-ult!
Stoat: LOl, you my first expression was oh my god!
ikuru: thanks for posting that!
Joey-b: seems like she is having fun time! like a pop drummer!
edit: oh, and btw, I have a nack for trying a lot of different things, so this might not be my final idea at all
Sony: thx! I guess

OH OH! Baba Yaga! Great. I'm in.
I come from Serbia. We call Baba Yaga - Baba Roga out there. Parents use stories about Baba Roga to scare children when they don't want to go to sleep. Something like, she will be under your bed if you don't get to sleep 'till midnight.
Man, I got really scared few times because of this old cow when I was kid.

"Art cannot be modern, art is eternal." Egon Schiele.
Great work everyone!
Here is my first WIP. For some reason when I was kid I used to imagine Baba Yaga with a cigarette. So I used this opportunity to draw her with a cigarette.

Here's my wip.. trying black and white start.. colouring will be interesting I think I might have to high contrast on it.. too strong lights and darks.
Matt Dixon - Looking really good! You've been an inspiration to me ever since I knew you existed.. got any tips on how to approach colouring on a black'n white piece?
Wiggers - Nice sketch! looking forward to see where you take it.
Pixeltuner - haha damn you had me there.. I found her attractive until I saw the face looking good!
Dwinbotp - Great face!
Yongs - Cool picture man, one note though - this is just me, but to me it reads like any other necromancer / deathwizard-thing, and not so much witch.
Wunderdark - funny sketch haha. Her house is hilarious
Stoat - Great start! I like the painterly look.
Joey-b - My eyes.. ! lol j/k it's gonna be fun to see where you take this.
Nikola Marincovic - Haha a cigarette.. I couldn't help but to think ".. and kids, don't smoke" when watching it. her hand seems to give away exactly that message
Threw a quick sketch together, clearly needs work, but, it's a start for now
DefiledVisions: Thx, and no problem Yours is looking like a decent kiddie snatcher already
I've had another idea though. More of a zombie-ish, foul witch who scours the forests/swamps at night in search of fresh children to devour. Sounds like fun eh?
Defiled Visions - The way I work is to set the tonal painting to 'multiply', drop the opacity a little, then block in colour with a big brush on the layer below. This tends to lessen the contrast so once I'm happy with the basic lay in of colour, I flatten everything and re-establish the darks and lights. Sometimes a quick pull on the contrast controls is enough though I'm happier painting them in. What I should have at that point is a very rough version of my finished painting and all that remains is to tidy and tighten things up until it looks done. The important thing is to make sure each stage - values first, colour second, finishing third - is fully resolved before progressing to the next. Does that make sense?
Damn you guys are fast! I'm passing because I need to work on my "Battle of the Sexes" entry.
But I wanted to say they are all going to give me nightmares. Bravo. LOL!
Nikola.... I love it!! It reminds me of 1970's acid trippy character design. Maybe she should be smoking a joint. Haha!
Here's my new head study, I think it's not as creepy as the first one but I hope the head study on this one with dramatic mood lighting and all will actually be better. What do you guys think?
@sony, yeah metal piercing through one's body is excruciating but makes cool props LOL
@DefiledVisions, glad you like it, what about this one. I like it better.
@Matt Dixon, I'm now a fan
Looking good so far guys... I was wondering if a 'cyber-punk' theme or post-apocalyptic approach is okay for this? Baba Yaga seems ripe for either of those themes to me. Just for reference, every time I suggest cyber-punk, I'm meaning moreso the fantastic Shadowrun type universe (magic meets man and machine)
Here's a quick thing I started, this will be a great round too!
For some reason the idea of flying around on a mortar (w/pestle) made me think of the Green Goblin so I dredged up a little Steve Ditko influence for his one.
Initial pose & basic tone
A little farther along
Continuity Break -- my sketchbook
Kata femme -- a 3D model WIP, now updated!
The Giordano Gambit -- Barsoomian Zingball at its best!
Valkyrie Ascending -- now updated with the second in a series!
ArmaRagnaGeddonRock-yer-Yuga! -- celeztial shitz 'n' gigglez
I . Miss . America -- "colored [eyes] may hypnotize..."
"In the end, Razputin, aren't we all just dogs playing poker?"
-- Edgar Teglee
Just a doodle. Couldn't resist the thought of Baba Yaga with all the brats in the modern world.
Ok, I'll go be serious now.
finally get around to posting here. here's a wip sketch i just scribbled out. i think it's going in the right direction, i'll maybe come up with a better pose.
daestwen: Hey "D" does this round have to follow the 3/4 char thing... considering just about every image I see of her she is half deep in a masher. Let me know if my image is too concealing... while its in the early stages
breif... Baba on the hunt with her 3 horsemen Red/Black/and White!
Pixeltuner - Great atmosphere in the new one. Just a bit too dark on my monitors, though?
dwinbotp - Digging the concept you've gone for, but I wonder how well it will translate in a full figure piece? Might get a bit lost? Are you going to apply the same stuff to the body?
Kian - Glad you're busy but I hope you find time to move that along, it's a great sketch.
Having the same issue as some of the other posters, quick sketch Would this hit the 3/4 rule? Her mortar is part of her character?

Sorry for the very rough wip. I think I might start over from a different angle
as this view seems to be somewhat popular, but I thought I would throw it up here for the moment.
There defiantly are some nasty looking hags in the works so far.
Nice work everyone.
