It's Out!!: Pastel Illustration with Gary Kelley

You are invited into the studio of award-winning illustrator Gary Kelley as he takes on the issue of immigration with his latest assignment, Undocumented. In this video, Kelly expresses his unique perspective on communicating an idea in a powerful way as he draws upon his lifelong interest in Native American culture and a love for historical accuracy. As he works, Kelley rides the line between the traditional and innovative while discussing subjects like composition, color, value, subject matter, and the practical uses of pastel along the way. This beautifully produced video is sure to inspire both students and anyone interested in contemporary illustration.

Did Richard Solomon get a crew to film Gary? Or was MB out here?? Gary Kelly's house is like down the road from here. The man is amazing.

I watched it and I'm looking forward to part 2. Then I can build some courage up to e-mailing him.

His info on color, idea development, and traditional media is priceless. Great vid for sure.

Gary was a big influence on me as well. He was making it as an independent artist and doing it his way. He is an excellent teacher, no doubt.

A very inspiring and educational video!

mister Kelley confidently guides us through an organic and intuitive process, constantly experimenting and refining while expertly maintaining the conceptual integrity of the illustration.

my only "grievance" is the camera work. even though i absolutely understand the difficulties involved with setting something like this up, i think the manchess video succeeded far better at letting us get up close and actually see the pigments being put down. this video suffers a bit from the camera being positioned at very sharp angles a lot of the time.

thank you!

Thanks so much for sharing your art; its nice to see someone taking part in this social issue too, especially since a certain bay area newspaper seems to keep trying to use scare tactics to drum up anti immigration support.

Pastels are an excellent way to learn how to handle color beyond just mixing whatever you need from paint, the limitation of having only so many colors means you make choices ahead of time, learning to place colors.

In essence, it's very much like limited palette painting, which is great for learning.

Gary Kelley is the visiting illustrator here at the Illustration academy right now. He's going to give a live demo today or tomorrow. I'll have to get this one in order to compare.

Thankyou for Posting the Demo, in school my class had to try and decipher is pastel and oil rub/colored pencils methods. Now I can see the Pastel method, am very happy. I graduated from Ringling, but never attended the Illustration academy due to lack of funds.
