IRON MAN: Designs and Illustrations

If I remember correctly this is my very first art post here. I am primarily a comic book illustrator, but as it happens I helped bring Iron Man from the comic pages onto the big screen. People keep asking me what I did on the movie and what the hell does the credit "Suit Consultant" mean. Well, I am not certain myself, but hopefully seeing the work will be entertaining.

The design of the armours/suits was a very collaborative process between Phil Saunders, Ryan Meinerding and myself, as well as Shane Mahan and Eddie Yang at Stan Winston Studios during the building of the 3d models.

And for the sake of shameless selfpromotion: Jon Favreau and I are doing a comic book together (Jon writing, I illustrating) called IRON MAN: Viva Las Vegas. First issue came out this week. Here are a few covers for it, as well as a few other Iron Man covers I finished in the last couple of months.

And that concludes this mega post.

amazing stuff, great thread.

I love the massive silver robot, however i feel that too much was borrowed from Monev the Gale, especialy with the robot's back turned to us.

That is totally awesome Seen the movie yesterday and I especially loved the suit and all the tech stuff shown in it. Great to see this stuff here as well.

The style in those illustrations is great, very clear and simple yet it gives a nice sense of depth. The texture is a bit overused maybe. Not sure it's the same over and over again in all of em, but it makes it a tad bit too much the same all over. Then again, it does link the artwork even stronger.

Yeah!! Right on, Adi!! Glad to see you post & nice to see the work again. Now if we can get Ryan up here too we'll have the trifecta.

Love the Viva Las Vegas covers & the 4 pieces at the end - hadn't seen those. Awesome! Didn't know that IM:VLV came out this week. I'm going to run and get it.

BTW the credit "suit consultant" means that you weren't union, so they weren't allowed to give you the even more underwhelming and generic title of "illustrator." Alas, if it weren't for the internet, we creative grunts would all be working in obscurity.

Hey Adi, saw the film a few weeks back and thought the designs/animations were brilliant. I even recognised your name in the credits! I remember your name from a tutorial you had on the net like maybe 4-5 years ago, its very distinct in my mind. You created a complete pencil tonal pass and painted in PS over the top of that. Did you still work in that fashion for these? or was the tonal pass made in PS?
Great stuff. Cheers for posting em.

Hey thanks guys! I really appreciate the comments. Thanks for making me feel welcome!

I have to say it's a bit hard to consider everything objectively as this stuff is up to two years old and I don't like to look at it too closely as there is a hundred things I'd do differently if I was to do it today. The covers in the second post are the only recent thing. It's quite a change of pace for me because the comic work I do gets published within months, sometimes even days, so the feedback is a lot more immediate, but with this movie stuff (same as with my old game stuff) you have to wait years before anyone sees it.

Phil, the pieces you haven't seen I did for the marketing side, I did dozens of them, after i finished with the production. They've been using them for toys, packaging, even bedsheets!... Capitalism at its best.

Does Ryan post here? He really should show his work, which is amazing. I have one of his Iron Monger pieces in my main work folder and I open it up often when i need a kick in the ass.

El Coro, I've been a big fan of your work for years.

Congrats on the movie! It's totally the bees knees. Also, your work on Extremis was awesome. Tony's looking much less Tom Cruise-ish now.
