Topic: Robot Gladiator
Background: As a lot of the suggestions in the suggestions thread are about various kinds of robots I thought it might be a good idea to make a topic out of it . The idea behind this is simple. Take a Roman gladiator fight and project it a couple of centuries in the future. Instead of human against human its robot against robot. They fight in an arena 500 meters across with a forcefield around it to protect the public from flying shrapnell and detonations. Winner is the robot last standing. There are, as with gladiotors, different classes of robots: the main classes are robots with ballistic weapons and robots with melee weapons, but there are a lot of subclasses with more subtle differences. Fights between 2 different classes are the most interesting to watch, but these are often difficult to match. There are few limitations, but those limitations that exist are quite important: No use of nuclear weapons is allowed, nor are nuclear powerplants (for obvious reasons). The robots must be be no larger than 20m high and 6m wide, as they have to fit through the entrance to the arena floor. No human in the public may be harmed during the fights by a robot (what the public does amongst itself is something else entirely). Robot Gladiator fights are comparable to today's Formula 1: everyone tries to get the best material and technological advantages on his/her side to win. Brief: 1. Design a Robot Gladiator. 2. Stick to the rules for the robots, so no superbombs or whatever. 3. Description is not needed but always nice ![]() Deadline: Sunday September 23 2007

yoitisi, are you wanting to see hunamoid looking robots, or can they look like whatever we want, as long as they fall under your guidelines? My first thought is that this would be kind of like the Battle Bots thing on a much larger scale, and more high-tech. I just want to make sure before I go too far with my idea here (not humanoid at all!)

ScaryPotato: The title I had in mind originally was "Mechanical Gladiator", but I was afraid that left too much freedom for people. However, "robot" doesn't necessarily mean "humanoid" I think
. As long as it acts on its own and fits through the stadium door, go ahead I'd say.<RJMC>: I accept about all mediums you can think of (although 3d modeling with some reservations as this is more about 2d images). Paint is ok, as long as we are talking about the stuff that comes out of tubes etc. and not MS Paint ![]()

RJMC - I've never used it but I have heard some good things about:
http://www.gimp.org/ and it is open-source. Not sure how much help it would be but it should be better than MS-Paint.

<RJMC>: What happened to the good old paper and pencil? I take them as well. Its just that the program Paint is too limited to produce anything usefull in my experience (Probably it'll work for Oekaki-art if that is the correct name, but that is a type of art that I have no experience with. I think some people use Paint for that. Then again, I don't really think it's a good style for Industrial Design drawings). You don't have to use a computer...

i like it, but my only reservations are from the waste on up (but not the arms) i think it loses some of it's focus when it comes to the head with the hair and stuff.

Still would like to touch up a few areas on it, but my brain is getting numb....so here's what I've got today.
![]() Chirurgo delle Spade (Surgeon of Swords) With its speed and relatively small size, the Chirurgo delle Spade easily outmanouvered other combatants. It relied on its speed to avoid damage, but if there was not time to dodge an attack, it would bow down towards the foe to deflect any strikes with thick armor plating on its top. As soon as the opportunity was there, the Chirurgo delle Spade would leap towards the enemy, using the knife-blade hands and feet to sever hydraulics and power cables, effectively paralyzing the other robot. Although there are no dramatic explosions when the Chirurgo delle Spade fights, fans enjoy the graceful spectacle of him dancing around the opponent and disabling it with such precision. ![]() -Ballistic gladiator- Notes: The first image come to my mind when I read the topic was... well in fact was similar to the great entry of Tom Garden. But when I read the background description i begun to imagine it similar to a gladiator arena fighting but not exactly with a similar clothing or armour design. Tryed to work on something different. At the end I didn't found what i have in mind but... ![]() Last edited by navarrot; September 24th, 2007 at 03:49 AM.. Reason: adding information to the post |

![]() The Melee rounds are the most visually brutal and exciting to watch! These robots keep going until the engines run dry, or until there isn't much of them left. The melee rounds are more popular than the ballistic rounds, as those ten to end too fast and lack the classic edge of the melee rounds.

Hi! This thing is goin to be my first IDW. I think I'll finish this one on my own. I'm not convinced about the head and also I'm not sure about the legs but I think I't will be fine when I find the shapes. Comments/corrections/critics are really appreciated.
