Hello! Uh, introductions and stuff... I'm varethane, I'm an art student in Canadialand, and I'm hoping to go into the video game industry in some kind of artistic capacity... right now I'm looking into maybe getting an internship but wow is it hard, specially since I'm not very good at writing about myself. :'D
ANYWAY, pictures and things!

More pictures! Uhhh, a bunch of things from the last few months or so I guess... in, uh, varying stages of completion and polish. I tend to finish things in one sitting and not document my process (unless it's for school/commission work), but maybe that will start to change if I stick to posting in this.... :B
Heh, thanks! Though, most of the ones that look like watercolour actually are watercolour (or are marker).
Today I did a lot of painting in acrylic, but since Mokhi took the photographs with her camera and I haven't gotten them yet, I guess I'll post those tomorrow or Thursday...
Here are some character turnarounds I whipped together over Thursday, Friday and Saturday... drawing up different views of the main characters of my webcomic (here). I might do more of these later, they go pretty fast and are satisfying.
The first one of these is digital (with brush-pen lines on bristol paper); the other two are coloured in marker, and touched up very slightly in Photoshop afterwards; mostly adjusting the levels. The second one resized funny, alas, because the character is meant to be short (so of course she looks like she's bigger.... maybe I shoulda left more white space...). I'm least happy with her middle pose I guess, since it looks more like she's climbing onto something than jumping...
Here are the paintings from yesterday!
This one's a study of a view from out of my window in Toronto...
This one, Mokhi gave me a canvas and told me to paint a giant robot, so this happened (two stages shown because... she photographed it with just the ground on, haha.)
This is a collaboration both of us are working on-- she poked it since then and it became awesome D: (and also this view has been rendered upside-down)
Nice water color style. I would love to see some of your rough sketches. The painting with the lightning hitting the elf is definitely your strongest piece. Keep posting
Thank you Thank you Thank you!
SKETCH BOOK in need of some comments and critiques please.
I would also like to see some of your rough sketches, or all of them. Post all of your sketches!! D :<
Edit: I photographed the colab that way because at the time we thought that was going to be right side up. And you should have all the stages of a painting, Cause I want to look at them all.

Well, here is a bunch more stuff that I did since the last post.... I guess updating every day probably won't happen XD IT WAS A LOFTY GOAL, BUT PERHAPS OUT OF REACH.
Reverse side of that sketchbook page (I turned the bled-through marker blob into a turtle!):
School project, with preliminary sketches included:
Random dude with a bow:
Some marker stuff:
Aaaahhhhh school... I want to be happy to be done with you as of today but instead I am just terrified...
Well, here's some of the stuff I've done since the last update.
Most of it's related to a 25-page minicomic I made (whole thing is online here), because it kind of ate my life for the past couple of weeks. Also I repainted a super old thing! Only a little bit, but I like it much better now...
@mokhii: yes. Yes I did. <_<
More stuff!!! Kind of a backlog cuz I was out of town for awhile, so all sketches were mostly on paper and a bunch of stuff has been omitted because it would take too long to scan. A whole bunch of really cruddy photos of really cruddy con doodles are here.
Whole bunch of sketches from my little notebook (plus closeups of a couple of pages):
Some more doodles:
Done while watching The Secret of Kells:
Annnd on the plane ride I took immediately afterwards (I might keep going back into this, it was kind of soothing to work on).
Random tree doodled in Illustrator:
stalagmosaaauuuuuur marker doodle
More later, I guess.
edit Forgot these!
Any advice on how to make the last one look less flat (composition-wise, or value-wise, or anything) before I start rendering it would be much appreciated!
Edit again Took on some advice from Mokhii....

I really like how the purple is working in the background of that by-plane racing image. Are you going to keep detailing it?
What's that grey thing?
Thanks for all the useful advice on my sketchbook! More saturation in the foreground was exactly what it needed.
Ou, how'r tree guy and troll mage doing?
@ Mokhii: Yeah, the purple one with the biplane is not anywhere near done yet. XD I'm gonna keep going in and detailing it till I'm satisfied...
As for the grey thing, it's just uh... a thing.... I dunno. Not sure why I put it up. And tree-boy and troll-mage... well... http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y11...ollfaaaace.jpg
@ jbrown: Thanks! Yeah, I really need to work on environments... I'm planning to do more studies soon.
Imaginative sketchbook! Ran through your online comic book really dug it. Are you doing more?!
@ Tides: Yeah, I am doing more of the comic! I try to update it three times a week... I had to go on hiatus during finals but I've started it up again. Unless you mean the 25-page comic that I posted progress shots of in this thread... in which case, I might do more; I don't have any plans to yet, but I like the characters and the world.
Here's more progress on that WIP... I'm going to try doing it all in that pseudo-monochrome to get the values down, then going over it with a colour layer afterwards. I think I made it too complicated now; I might go back in and lighten all that stuff in the middle-ground a little.
Annnd here's a thing I painted for Mokhii, of her character.... sort of a speedpaint portrait, I guess, with acrylics. (About 20-30 minutes)

Thiiiiings! And thanks, Rambok, I do enjoy drawing characters a lot. XD
Here's this thing, which I've stopped touching for the moment... I think...
Here are a couple of slightly old doodles, one of which I went a little crazy poking in Photoshop.... man, those layer blending properties can get some crazy effects!
Storyboard exercise from a couple months ago, which I finally got around to scanning... It's based on a short commercial from Psyop, advertising the Rav4. It was sort of an amusingly weird trailer....
Some more paintchat stuff from yesterday!
edit Oh geez... just realized I put the wrong first image into that storyboard! OOPS. Well, I'll fix it tomorrow. Bedtime!

Paintchat... Well, mostly it's practice I guess? The tools in there are surprisingly versatile.
Some more stuff! Satellite- and space-station-drawing with Mokhii, the night before I flew out. Just straight-up studies. These were pretty fun; my favourite is the one with all the black.
