garbage sketchbook

bought the sketchbook from walgreen. Needs to commit and actually draws with pencil not just scribble in photoshop with wacom tablet. -_-

I do understands how art works but I never really shows it with experience along with the knowledge, shame on me.

crit, tips, such would be appreciated. thanks!

a shot on doing simple sphere shadow. Spent about a hour on it I think. I'm pleased but I want to aim for perfection. Any tips to make the shades smoother? Smaller brush and low opacity to work it?

thanks

Hi there. There's a few books I'd like to recommend you read since they really reinforce the fundamentals:

Glenn Vilppu's Drawing Manual
Sheldon Borenstein's It book
Mike Matessi's Force

In the mean time, I'd recommend studying Anatomy. Start anywhere in the body you want and study the superficial musculature and the skeletal structure. A decent book for this is Gray's Anatomy though you can really just look that stuff up online.

Once you have been introduced to the fundamentals I highly recommend studying the work of the old masters since you will begin to recognize these elements in their drawings.

Heres a couple very helpful Youtube channels aswell:

http://www.youtube.com/user/sheldonsartacademy

http://www.youtube.com/user/vilppustore

That's it really. In order to improve, the first step is to learn the fundamentals and the second is to practice them. Feel free to consider my advice or ignore it, it's up to you.

For the sphere you will want to add a cast shadow, and some reflected light, umm also a core shadow. It looks a little oval too, and needs specular highlights(if its suppose to be shiny).

Oh 1 more thing, use the biggest brushes you can get away with

Dude, loving the hand in post #2! It has character and style! =)

Great start on the spherical shading. ^^d I recommend playing around with the brush options, hardness, softness, etc. I prefer using the default brush in Photoshop, but that's just me. =)

Continue those Bridgman studies! Have you heard of Andrew Loomis or Burne Hogarth? They also have great books to study from. =)

Keep on sketching! =D

Hey nonameowns,
When I started out my sketchbook I also drew apples! Love it!
I really think I can see improvement. Post #7 picture three has got some very nice sketches. Keep going in that direction. Also, remember that big brushes are your friend in photoshop.

Cheers

Keep it up, study study study, darker lines would also help a lot and getting straighter line as far as the squares go. Just wondering, but is that all your drawing more posts would be good would get more people to look at your sketchbook and getting more help

Hi there. Your studies are getting much better, stay focused and remember to have fun with it. Also try to find techniques which you find most comfortable and then stick with them so that then you will fully understand the technique and be able to use it in any situation, otherwise you will cram your head with too much information and possibly get confused when drawing things. I hope that makes sense, keep it up.

I like where that apple is going but I'd work on it more. Turn the apple into a greyscale and see if that helps. Then, flip them horizontally and see if you don't notice it more accurately.

Keep at it! The studies are great. Just a recommendation - do some general full-body proportion doodles before going into details of the body. Drawing simple shapes help as well.
