Vogel's Vehicle Design Sketchbook
Hello CA!!!! I've had a profile for ages, but never posted anything (just like every other CA noob) and am just now posting a sketchbook. I just graduated with an undergrad in industrial design, and now it's on to London for a masters in vehicle design. Here's some sketchwork, as always comments and crits welcome.

Hey thanks so much for stoping by my sketchbook and for that motivating comment!
Totally cool taht you are going to do you master in transportation design. The sketches look awesome more plz. Subscribed! Hey and if you do sketches by hand what is the common size of paper used? Because of perspective and everything I don't think you work to big. Are you. I'll send you a pm ![]() Cheers

kischi: yeah the initial thumbnails i did for these were on 8.5x11in standard printer/copy paper for us Americans
. Then scanned them, and put them on a 11x17in canvas in PS. But you can really sketch on any size you want, sometimes drawing bigger makes it easier to get perspectives right and more detail. I have a 9x18in landscape pad for super flat car perspectives. Thanks for the comment!!

Hey Kelly, thanx for stopping by!!! No worries about reading, I do it all the time. I use a variety of programs; for sketching/rendering I use painter, ps, illustrator and sketchbook pro. For 3D i use 3D studio max, rhino and I'm learning several others. I'll post more tonight, currently stuck at work :/

Great digital line work! Do you have any that are more rendered?

Here's another update before I hit the sack for the night.
Baze: Sorry, no renders CA worthy at this time, just got over shoulder surgery on my drawing arm. But have no fear, I have big plans for some of these... Kelly X: I went back and looked at the sketch of the seats and noticed that my perspective was off, thanks for pointing it out!!!

Very clean and polished looking lineart. Do you give your lines an a addtional "beauty pass" after the initial sketches ?
Looks very professional. ![]() |

marcnail: Thank you for the comment!! Depending on what type of media I'm using will depend on if I need a beauty pass or not. Usually digital I will, but for traditional not usually. The first pencil sketch of the last update was done in one shot
![]() kuni-bob: Thank you, becoming a professional is the goal. I am working on doing a "walkthrough" of my sketching process that I'll be posting so you can see how I work. Kelly X: Thanks!! I think the bottom car needs to be tweaked a little. its a tad vague but overal has good proportion. Maybe that one will get some color when I'm happy with it. ![]() *MENTORING* Also included some media: use whatever you want, but these are my personal inks and pencil choices. PRISMACOLOR pencil in Indigo Blue or Black (Industry standarf for pencils). PRISMACOLOR Verithin Pencil (Harder lead used for contructing sketch. Pens: WriteBros by PaperMate and a hexagonal Shape BIC, these are super cheep. Go with the BIC first, the ink doesn't blotch up. ANd then good sharpener and white drafting eraser.

Hey everyone, it's been a little while. My apologies. I've had alot happening at home/work/ and on the school front of things believe it or not. So I thought I would post all of the the quick sketches I've been doing recently. With the holiday coming and going, I spent alot of time in the car traveling with family and friends, which is a great place to get ideas out, but not so good for quality. I also started doing some super quick enviros' too, they turned out ok, but I think they're interesting, let me know what you think.
work: Been working crazy hours designing lots of new stuff for SEARs, hint hint wink wink. School: this is border line depressing. I cannot go to London this year. As it turns out my loan applications were denied because of the large amount I was asking for. But Royal was very understanding and they are considering me accepted for next year instead. That means that I have another 12 months to save money up so my loans will be smaller next time around. ![]() On to the work. Mostly cars again. I've got some color stuff locked away which is super old, but I think you might like it, that's soon to come. But these are all traditional media sketches each taking no more than 15-20 min. Who knew bouncing around on the highway could slow you down ![]() hope you like, -A-

found your thread searching for perspective stuff - very nice stuff you've got going on, really like the environment thumbs and the interiors, no idea how you get your head round all those curves and still keep everything in line !

patrickdeza: Thank you, hopefully more color coming soon
![]() BlackDelphin: Thank you, Feng is a huge part of my basic drawing skills. I've looked at his work and style for a while. He really does a great job with quick perspective. mrdigs: Yeah it's tough sometimes, keeping everything straight. But that's why I'm practicing. Thanks for stopping by. A couple during my lunch break... -A-

Ahh, very fluent. I'm getting some Daniel Simon vibes here.
I'll continue following this. About the Tires...Do you use these plastic stencils for the ellipses sometimes, or is it freehand all the way ? ![]() |

Wilkerson: Thanks for stopping by. Yes I have seen the new Ferarri; it's pretty sick, those Italians sure know a thing or two. ;D
Bartovan: Glad my messy sketches are doing someone else some good. Glad to hear and thanks for checkin' em' out. Stridiggio: Thank you. Marcnail: Daniel Simon has some cool stuff. To answer your question, yes I do use stencils for certain types of sketches. If I am cleaning up a very loose thumbnail, I will, or also if I intend on rendering the sketch I will use ellipse templates. But otherwise all of my ideation is freehand. Just like this next bunch. It's been a while CA, I've been super busy with work, so I've had little time to sketch on my own. Here's some more that have accumulated over the past month or so....

Another day, another batch of sketches. I seem to be improving a little. If I had the time to slow down, these would be a lot better.

New Color Update!I had the chance to mess around with some different render techniques today. I tried them out, they are quick sketch/render techniques used to define shape and form quickly. Tell me what you think.
