Welcome to CA! You're off to a great start here, Shiro
You might wanna watch out for slipping mouths, though... I went ahead and did some quick POs to show you what i mean
First pic -- in the photo ref, the line of his smile is pretty much parallel with the line of his eyes..
Second pic -- I moved the orig. mouth over a bit to line up with the line of the nose..
(Also, his lips are a little dark, and his right cheek isn't quite that round in the ref pic.)
Anyway, just a heads-up on mouth issues... otherwise, lookin' good and keep on drawing!
amontilladoAg I just want to make sure i am understanding this correctly...
what your saying is that I am making the right side of the lips curve down more towards the neck when it should be curving up and towards the cheek more? At least That is a mistake I can now see after reading your crit even if that wasn't what you were talking about ^_^""" But I'm pretty sure thats what you were fixing in the first PO right?
On the second PO I can totally see that now... I really should move the lips up and to the left a little...
WOW thanks so much that is one of the most helpful comments I have ever recieved!
Yeah, if you compare mouths, the one on the left I tweaked so that where the lips come together (what I'm calling the "line") is more level with the eyes. In the mouth on the right, that line dips down a little too much.
Glad you found this helpful, Shiro
Nice start... I like the blonde kid too...
on the SP though I would be careful about the lips... not only placement such as AmontilladoAg has mentioned, but the voluptuousness of them... they don't look like your lips! Its like you stopped looking at the ref and just drew from your head because you know what lips look like...
but what you really need to do, especially when drawing or painting a likeness of anything is look at the ref 90% of the time and what you are doing 10% of the time... always comparing proportions and curves.... dont look at them as lips look at them as lines and shapes that you are unsure about and really try to understand them as you put them down (on the paper or digitally)
keep it up!
I like what you did with Kumariis proportions. that is a really fun drawing, If I could offer one suggestion it would be to not let your love of anime stop you from drawing from life. If you look at Cowboy Beebop for example those guys probably spend the majority of their art time just in observational drawing. Just a thought.
Ok I worked on the self portrait some more... I think it looks better now ^_^"
Also here is a WIP of another portrait I am working on!
thanks for the crits so far! ^_^
So yeah, I totally missed the fact that that's your self-portrait, sry And thx for checkin' out my SB, btw
Just some little extra crits on that SP -- watch the shadows on the chin, your jawline's a bit manlier than that , and the brows could use a little beefing up, and I'd nix the glossy-eyes look.
WOW... Ok every time I check ths site I see more I could do with the SP Which is awesome cuz thats why I joined!
I think I will go back and fix those things tomorrow AmontilladoAg !
as for checking out your SB... It was my pleasure! you are really good ^_^
also their is nothing really significant about it being my Self Portrait (cept that I can post the ref I used then) so yeah don't worry about it XP
I like some of your work, but I honestly think doing more realism will help improve your skill the most.
The anime is good but like most people have said, drawing from life is the best way to improve. Nevertheless, never stop drawing from your head as that is really the most fun.
Oh and you aren't alone as a teenager on this site I'm only 14.
Hey Vernhal, oh or I mean ShiroNami. It's KC from PK, your making your CA debut! Awesomeness, you got guts. You know my thoughts on your work- So don't stop drawing man! Keep trying your best, your taking the right steps, so keep it up!
callouses on the fingers. If you donít have any, youíre not drawing enough.
I will be an Artist or nothing! ; The Sketchbook
Hey man nice job! thanks for posting in my sketchbook I love meeting all the fellow young artists here if your like around 15yrs post in my book and I will definatly msg u and talk and stuff! but ya anyways..
very nice, strong lines I would look up on some anatomy and stuff for the realistic pieces but the anime looks great! I rlly love the one reffed from the ff thing, that is rlly welldone! def my fav!
hey msg me some time i would love to chat!
thanks for the comments and crits JediNinjaMan ^_^
Also this is for everyone-
I don't have much artistic inspiration right now. anything I do right now will feel forced. I'm gonna take a couple days off... But I should be back by next week at LATEST. Just need to take a little break!
WELL! I actually got inspired today WOOTS! So yeah here is a wip of something I was working on all day ^_^
I should finish by tomorrow (I hope to at least) and I will post the finished product then plus a few sketches and an acrylic painting I am working on.
Anyways Tell me what you think so far.
WHOO well I finished the one I was working on yesterday... So yeah Its for a mascot contest ON another forum! Wish me luck!
The rest are all from a college course I took last semester. The first is a collage of all of my friends done ENTIRELY with bic pen. The second is like... a person making a face out of stuff on the sand. XP It was an assignment where we had to do a self portrait made out of objects cept mine looks nothing like me.The third one was my Cubist project. and the last one is something I did with pastels. Its supposed to represent the mysterious nature of time.
and this one wouldn't upload but it is a WIP of an acrylic painting I am working on this summer. I'm not completely unhappy with my progress.
I just realized the version I uploaded was to saturated so here is a new version-

You construct stuff as they teach in "how to draw manga/anime" books.. Stop that and try to draw what you see instead of what you would want to see, or what you 'think' that you see. Take your time and don't rush, do studies..
Keep it up!
Hey man, thanks for stopping by my meagre sketchbook! Some of your stuff here is great. I'm not really into the whole anime thing, so I join the others in saying 'draw from life more!'. You have talent, it's just that anime/manga is a very limiting genre unless you are the best of the best. And the best of the best were skilled and well-rounded life drawers to begin with. Find your own style man, I look forwards to seeing it.
wow that is one nice update!
I love that collage, even tho it is somewhat anime there is emotion in it and Im sure that it capitalized what you see in them so atleast for me it is very fun to see and pretty inspiring! keep it up
ohh aND that wip is great man that is like 10000x better than anything i could do keep it up, its a pleasure to see, i would like to see some pencil and also anatomy study...
great update and thanks for posting on my SB
Ilsse you around, cheers!
I think you have a great start here Shiro and it sounds like youre motivated enough to keep learning and improving. I would also echo the comments on drawing more from life and studying anatomy. That will help you with shapes, proportions, character dev and better anime if your heart calls for it You seem to have a good grasp on color. Im liking the purple tagger!
Step this way and take a glimpse at my sketchies
Ok thanks for all the feedback everyone! I promise now... My next post will contain anatomy studies hehe! And I will definitely try to draw from life more!
Thanks for stopping by my sketchbook.
Very interesting stuff, but like a few others have said, anatomy and life drawing will help a lot.
If you ever run into an inspiration rut again, just keep drawing. Get into the practise of keeping yourself motivated. If you're working on a big piece and have a hard time getting it right, its ok to step back but draw other things while you can. Its helped me break though at least, it might work for you.
Thx for dropping me a comment m8^^.
As has been said before, if you really want to become great, and improve a lot, stop drawing symbols of things, draw them as they REALLY look. If you get what I'm saying. And furthermore, anatomy is not paramount IMO. Sure, it is important, but building a foundation where you know how to handle gesture and basic shapes such as spheres and boxes, dull as it may sound, is even more so. I could warmly recommend "The Drawing Manual" by Glenn Vilppu. It's helped me out with drawing far more than the specific anatomydrawing-books by say, Hogarth and Bridgman (although they're great too^^). Anyway, keep drawing, and work on some basics, and I'll see more from you in a while. Draw!
