Hi I've always loved CA and am amazed at the amount of hard work and talent here! I feel more than a little unworthy to post among the incredible sketchbooks here, but I sketch nearly every day and am always looking to improve my work so I thought I would join and see how I go.
I draw and paint a variety of things - a lot of portraits and costume design as well as animals and storybook-style illustrations. I paint digitally (Painter) and with watercolors. What I'm working at improving on right now is my figure drawing, original costume design, and storytelling through painting.
Critiques are extremely welcome and appreciated! You can be blunt, I'm here to improve.
The way I sketch, in case anyone would like to know when viewing the sketches, is to create my base with a blue pencil and then finish with a mechanical lead pencil. I use a lightbox to transfer ideas from one sketch to the next. If a sketch turns out particularly well I'll paint it and I'll post those results for you here as well so you can see the progression.
Well here I go, I'm a bit scared I must admit, I hope my work fits in here. Thanks in advance for viewing my sketchbook!
First I'll just post some of my sketches over the past few weeks and then I'll update every time I have new work to share.

Welcome to CA.
Nice facial proportions. I reckon you can focus on the forms of your hands and feet in terms of anatomy. Also for the 6th pic, her left arm stands out as rather obscure, you probably ought make her sleeve more form-fitting or thicken the outlines.
Post some more.
Thanks Jeri ! Good points both, I will definately practice my hands and feet more. Hey I checked out your sketch thread, you have a great style and your comics are really funny
These are some watercolors I did this week. The first one is a concept for a sketch group topic "storm" ("storm in a teacup"), and the second one is a fantasy character experiment.
Ugh, watermarks. Just kidding, although i do find them a bit distracting when they are right across the middle of the artwork. But I digress...
Nice start to your thread and i like the figure work, especially on the last one. Good job on the eyes. On the cup and saucer, the perspective on the saucer is off. It should be more of an elipse, as the cup doesn't seem to actually sit on top of it. Can't wait to see more.
Hey hey, someone I know! Wasup?
Love these sketches. The storm in a teacup is VERY cute, and I dig the long blue dragon one too.
Your lips look a little Lara Crofty, especially in the bottom lip. It works very well for some faces, but detracts from others. I like your style, but I think you should try different ways of drawing lips and eyes (and faces in general), and see if you can convey different emotions in your portrait pieces. So far, aside from the very cute merdog piece, all of the girls who have their mouths closed all look pouty in pretty much the same way.
Ylla!! Hello Great to see you! Good point about the lips and faces, I will work on that!
This is something I finished this week, based on a Seegmiller sketch, it's one of the exercises from his book. Painter IX.
Ylla - Thanks ! The book is "Digital Character Design and Painting" by Seegmiller. That exercise was to teach you to paint using his method, so he provided the sketch and I painted it using a mix of his methods and mine. It's a great book, I've already learnt some very useful painting techniques from it.
Madplanet - Thank you ! I had a lot of fun painting that tree.
These are my newest bits and pieces, the first two are from a commission I'm working on at the moment, and the second is a Persian dancing girl for the sketch group I run - pencil with color added in Painter.
I think u have a very nice personal style. I like it alot.
Some crits: If you going to give your sketches color. try to not use so much strokes. IMO I think it gives the sketches a little "dull look".
(Im not so good at english but I hope you understand my point)
Thanks Dreamworker and Motives I appreciate the feedback!
Here's my latest batch of sketches and paintings. Critiques always welcome!
This one has a story to it, for the Fantasy Sketch Group topic "Summer Queen" - A young girl seeks a moment of solitude in the fading evening light. She feels too young to bear this kind of responsibility, too inexperienced. She is the Summer Queen for the year, chosen from a handful of girls in their childbearing years to try and keep a dying race from extinction. Soon the seasons will turn and another will take her place and she admits to herself she will be glad to return to her former life. The child... she tries not to think about the child... already he belongs to someone else. She sighs and stays a moment longer, trying to ignore the heat and her own aching heart.
Loving the eye.. Keep it up!
