Hello CAers. I am in the process of getting all the information I need to begin an internet cafe in my uni's city close to the campus. Yes, I am only 20 years old, and yes, this is my first business venture into a real market. But beyond that, my inexperience is really inconsquence to the amt of profit that can be made in a town that is still expanding. The internet cafe I have in mind will be situated downtown, about 1-3 blocks away from the campus. It's prime location and gets a ton of traffic.
What I need help with from you guys is the name. I need something catchy and can easily be remembered. Well, here are the choices and anything else that you can think of to chime in with, be it useful or critique, please post. I want to make this as useful and business like when i go looking for financing.
liked 'Megabit Cafe' the most. easy to renember, explainitory for the computers AND easy to spread the word about.
'Wired Cafe' is short and catchy.
'Megabit' is getting a little too geeky there if ya know what I mean. hehe.
'Lincoln's Lattes'... No comment. What in the world gave you this idea? Haha.
I don't mean to be a jerk... but you should seriously put a LOT of thought into opening up a business. It's not like eating an apple pie.
You're 20 years old. How much experience do you have owning and managing a company and employees? How much experience do you have managing ANYthing? How much experience do you have *working* for that matter? Do you have the capitol to hire a small-business financial planner? Do you have business insurance? Can you afford benefits for your employees? Do you know how much it costs to hire financial planner to begin with?
Have you ever worked as a barista? Do you know what the challenges are in that, or what the challenges are in maintaining computers that require pay-per-minute fees? Are you current with government protocols regarding food-service industry businesses? Do you know the state requirements of health, safety, and sanitation pre-requsites? Do you have a food-handler's permit?
Do you have a business liscenese? If not, do you know where to get one? Do you know how to get one? Have you taken any business classes before? Have you, yourself, worked in an internet cafe before (not just frequent as a customer)? Is this going to be an independantly owned cafe? Or a franchise? How much is it going to cost to embellish the cafe with furniture and computers? If it's independent, do you have the start-up money to rent out business space, fix it up, buy the furniture and machines that you need, advertise, property tax, employee wages, utility bills, and various supplies? If it's a franchise, do you have the money to build it up to an acceptable level that the franchise would expect of you? And if you did, why should the franchise let you run it when it can put one of it's own, more experienced employees in charge of it instead?
How good is your credit? Have you shown proof of paying off large loans before? Have you paid your rent on time, consistently, along with your other bills? How much is your *current* level of income? Do you have enough to even pay off the interest of a loan?
These are questions you will be asked by a loan provider. I don't mean to be an ass, but opening up a business isn't something that anyone can do whenever they feel like, and only worry about what to name it. The name comes last. Thats the last thing you should be concerned about.
Don't get me wrong.. it CAN be done. A LOT of people open up businesses... But it isn't the sort of thing you decide in a few days, weeks, or months for that matter. Its a LOT of preparation.
First and foremost, I would suggest that you get a position as a barista at an actual internet cafe (if you aren't already working as one). Until then, there's a very slim chance any bank will financially support you.

CaptainInsano, I really appreciate the thought and comment you gave. I have been thinking about an internet cafe for some time now. Like I said, don't let the age confuse the topic here. 20 years is a short amt of time to learn an entire business operation, but I am competent enough to figure it out BEFORE I make a huge decision such as this. I have been doing research on this for months and have read countless books and internet articles about it. I have observed baristas work and have been to many different cafes to see how they operate and how they have things situated.
I am currently writing and revising, seeking outside help as well, with a business plan. This is not something that I am thinking of starting tomorrow morning or next year for that matter. I still need to research the market and some other things before I make the final decision to go ahead with this. Like you mentioned, I have thought about all of those questions and have a good answer for most of them that will be present and detailed in my business plan. You brought up a really good point though, about managing people and a business. While the people and things I have managed have not been on as grand a scale as a full blown internet cafe, I have experience in it. I've managed 2 lawn care businesses with me and some friends, have managed an online game development (which I let go b/c of time constraints), and not to mention countless school projects. Don't get me wrong, an internet cafe is not the same as those things I listed, but I have done some of that.
About the topic of being to internet cafes, there isn't one around the place I am thinking of doing this, except maybe the campus union. They serve coffee and other things there while giving access to the internet to students. I observe before I plunge into anything, so I am sure that I have a good idea of how things will run when I do finally open this.
About the name, the name is a major factor for me because I want to be able to incorporate everything I want to do around it. It gives me an easier way to write everything up and design/plan/implement the things I need at the beginning instead of having to come back around and do it at a later date. Though it would make sense to go ahead and do the more "important" things now, I am still researching and exercising all of my options in this matter.
EDIT: I missed the part of the loan and paying them off part. I would like to address that now; While I was at school, I had taken out school loans. Those are not to be paid back during school enrollment, but up to 90-120 days after you graduate or are out of school and not enrolled at least as a half-time student. I have 3 credit cards that I am paying off and these will be paid off in full by the end of the year. Once those are completely paid off, I will then begin working on the school loans, which can range up to $2500-$15,000 (USD). That is the biggest thing at the moment holding me back from securing a definate loan and showing that I can pay them back.
On the topic of business loans and other requirements that are to be met, as I have stated, I am still working on this idea and still researching. I am slowly but surely securing all of the necessary information that I need in order to attain said permits, licenses, and any other form that I need to operate.
Again, I appreciate the comment and thought/concern about my idea/dream/vision, whatever you wish to call it.

Café Nerd! There's a Café chain called 'Café Nero' and it's in caps so I always read it as Café Nerd.
As for the three names, well, sorry but I'm not really drawn to any of them. Lincoln's is just... not internet and as for the other two... beh.
Though out of all of them I suppose I have to go for Wired Café.
Well, Lincoln is the name of the city where I am wanting to open up shop. I was just thinking of making it seem more..."homely" to the locals there, but it's not even really a thought that I am considering. I was trying to think of names that would be more catchy and rememberable by the people walking by, so that way it'll stick in their heads a little longer and it gives them an idea of what is inside. Besides, Wired Cafe kinda goes for both internet and coffee...
Well, it would seem as if Wired Cafe is the winner after 2 days of voting. I'll close this down by the Friday so that it doesn't clutter CA more than it needs to. Appreciate everyone who took a quick vote to help me out.
