I would like to go to Gnomon for cg. They require a portfolio and I have very limited art skills. Will a local community college have art classes that can help me improve versus an art school? What kind of stuff is Gnomon looking for in a portfolio? I know they are selective, only accepting under 20 students for fall and spring. I would rather take 6 months to a year of art classes at a local community. I figure in that timespan I should be able to produce a decent portfolio. Do I need to take painting, drawing and sculpture? Am I being delusional and instead should I really go to art school befoe applying to Gnomon? Anyone who has inside knowledge or gone thru the portfolio process please help me out. I have searched for several months and have finally set my sights on Gnomon.
Hi. I've never been to Gnomon before but I've read about the school a bit. From what I've read, they offer a 1 year program? (correct me if I'm wrong)
and it's suppose to be very intensive, not to mention expensive as well! Unless you're the motivated, VERY hard working individual, I would not recommend you going there yet.
You said you have very limited art skills? If so, I would suggest you to enroll in a local community that offer art courses and learn the fundamentals first. What do you want to study anyways? Concept art? 3D modeling/animation?
I believe their cg program is 21 months long. I am going to take painting, drawing and sculpture. Sculpture helps with 3d, painting with textures and drawing with general composition and color theory. I want to create a portfolio that demonstrates a level of potential in the areas of 3d. The only thing I am worried is whether community college provides an adequate basic art education. I am trying to avoid paying for an art school and also paying for gnomon in the future. I want to study 3d modeling but I also want to be a generalist. From my knowledge the smaller studios want generalists and the big guys want specialists. It will take a couple of years to even be considered by a big studio or project anways. The fact that gnomon provides you with general 3d skills and also a specific skill is why I want to go there.
