WIP on an EOW (Pursuit in the Clocktower). I very rarely use tracing paper but this time it came out useful for sketching figures without messing up the background when the poses don't come out right on the first try. I scanned the figures and perspective drawing separately, masked the figures in place and darkened them and that served as a starting point for the Photoshop work. For the windows, I'm using Smart Layers for the first time in a painting. It allows me to tweak the window pattern separately without warping it in place every time.
Wow, impressive sketchbook nice still life studies and painting style. By the looks of it the time you are putting in really is paying off, keep up the good work!

Here's another WIP of the EOW. I adjusted the levels so that there's a lot of black with lost edges, I think it's working great. I'm half-consciously going for something like the style of mission briefing illustrations in the really old games Thief 1 and 2 (check this video for samples, I love the style of those paintings!).
Hey smuli! I like the zombie pice a lot! The poses in your latest pice are way better then for example the once of the barbarian ship. The poses of the barbarians dont convey much action and energy. I always pretend to be the guy I want to draw when I have an idea like that and just do the movements by myself to get a better impression on how you bend and stretch your body in a certain action like stricking down with an axe. I like the action in the last pice, thats pretty cool but Id may change the pose of the guy jumping from the window again. The second one you did looks cooler the the frist one but it has in my opinion a bit of an ballerina look to it cos of the way the head and the arms stretch. You can maybe make him more baddass. Furthermore you got some very nice studys here, keep it up!
Mathias - Thanks for the good advice! I think the poses of the zombies got ok because I got crazy with them, probably should do more of that for the ordinary people too. You're right about the pose of the jumping person in the EOW looking ballerina-like but I thought about having her be a woman because of that. Don't know if that's the right way to go though, I'll take a break from the picture and see what I think when I continue. Thanks again!

Motivated by the failures above, I thought I'd study clouds today. First off, some sketches from head.
I thought this kind of thing might help me, I searched the photos from Google. After marking the light directions, I tried expanding some of them by painting.
Some notions of clouds I wrote down:
-Clouds reflect and let through a lot of the sky color
-Clouds reflect the ground/sea color beneath them too
-The shadow color of clouds is usually a "baby blue" mixed of sky color and grey. Shadows are usually no darker than the sky above them, unless the sun is low or the clouds are backlit in a photo
-Thicker parts of clouds have stronger shadows beneath them (subsurface scattering)
-Thin clouds don't have shadows at all
-The higher the sun is, the less color the clouds have
-Hardest edges and biggest contrast is to be found on the parts facing light
-Apart from highlights in strong lighting, edges inside a cloud are usually really soft. Harder edges are caused by overlapping forms.
-Flipping a picture with clouds upside down helps you see the perspective. Think of them as floating platforms you're flying over.
