Hi , nice start here.. and yeah, it doesn't fit in finally finished section..
I think you could work a lot on the values, make it pop more! Also
whats going on in the background ? Well, generally : What is going on in the picture ?
If its the character you want to present, then i'd suggest drawing the whole thing and not just a tiny headshot.
Right now i'm not sure whatever its a huge armor or if its some sort of egg.
Work on it some more, especially try to define your idea, and make it appear to us!
I put it in finally finished because, well... I don't plan on doing any more to it.
It was really just an exercise or experiment. I don't have a story, I didn't plan out the composition or armor or anything. Really, the only thing I was concerned with is wether or not I could draw the guy and have it look like what I imagined.
I agree this is a better place for it, didn't think about it before.
As far as making the colors pop, what would help? I'm at a loss with color.
Any tips on making the texture look more fleshy and wet?
The egg comment is funny, I've had 2 other people say the same thing! The armor was just scribbles that turned into something...
Fuck, just had a whole reply typed out for you. Here we go again.
No such thing as "too detailed." Too busy yes, too much fluff, yes, but not too detailed. This one isn't one of them, in fact you can take it a lot further.
Your painting provides an easy and cool way to depict form but you haven't embraced it - those two lights on the side are excellent for showing form (even better if you dim one of them).
I did an ultra quick paintover just to illustrate my point - very quick hope I didn't ruin anything. Basically, make your background work with your composition - the previous blue silhouette with lighter cutout wasn't doing anything. I also added some texture, feel free to open up older paintings or photos and drop them on top, then play around with the layer settings to get some texture going.
This will help you get away from the PS blobs. Though, 90% of the paintover work was done with the normal round Photoshop brush. I added additional texture with a scan of an experiment of some used thinners and chalk, putting the scan on a new layer and setting the layer to "overlay" mode.
There's no reason why you can't use your own photos to generate texture (that means you photograph a texture such as ground or grass or in this case a total mess and use that).
All that contributes to the "roughness" you see . Hope this helps, have fun mate!

the second quick drawing is better, i think it needs more highlights on the armour thought, help push the lighting effect a bit more.but the rest of it looks pretty good, i am also new to photo shop, and i must say i have done alot of experimenting, and it will really help you get use to the different effects, so good luck.
