Hey everyone, here's my responses:
JJ McKool: Don't be hatin! And don't quit! And thanks!
frixon: Thanks! I appreciate it!
crazybrush: Thanks! I'm glad you liked the work on my site as well.
Azurelle: Yup, took me awhile, huh? And thanks again for the third time on helping me out.
pablo vicentin: Thanks to you too!
Hookswords: Wow, that's a great compliment. I should get royalties from Sony... oh wait, I think I do, but I should get more now.
Bomba: Thanks man! I'm glad you like that one. I was wondering if it was too loose in areas. It is tough to know when to stop. I'm still trying to learn that one everyday.
armaldon: Yeah, we're so glad that Sony put in the time and money to produce a high quality behind-the-scenes DVD on the making of the game. I, personally, love to watch those kinds of things. So it was cool to be part of one. Thanks man!
nebezial: Thanks for the compliments! Yeah, Tomb Raider was a fun time. And Top Cow was a great place to call home. Yeah, I saw a copy of the compendium at Barnes & Nobles recently. I was hoping the guys over there would send me one, but I doubt it. Hey, thanks so much for the kind words. I hope you're having fun over at the Cow. Great work!
cucak: Thanks! Yeah, that was a fun one to design. They probably just look like horses in the concept but they're these massive horses made out of granite. They are a whole level themselves. It's a really fun part of the game.
Zynic: Thanks! I definitely will...
Hey I just wanted to jump in and say thanks a lot for posting these. The illustrations and concepts are all great. Also wanted to let you know that I had a blast playing the game. Visual things couldn't have been done better, and the architecture is exploding with artistic talent and insight. Props, sir.
N & B
I've been looking for GoW concept art for some time now. Really wonderful stuff you got here. Is there any chance you could post a work in progress? Or even a possible time lapse so we could see how on earth you start off with your work?
I love god of war 1, and this art makes me want the sequel so badly! Amazing!
You might be tiring of the asspats already Andy Park, the bruises must be killing you, - here's another one, sorry, ....... the "steeds" picture is par excellence
Andy these are great designs and a huge inspiration to me personally. Currently I'm in the last frantic stages of a senior thesis project involving a concept art series based around a game of my own design. After dealing with the production schedule that I'm keeping, I have twice as much respect for you men and women actually out there in the real game design business. On another note, I was wondering how long some of these designs might take. Is the turnaround within a single day? How is it decided which designs are taken to a more polished level? How many designs were you expected to produce within a single work day? What are a few tips that you could impart concerning increasing the speed at which one renders....like avoiding getting bogged down with the details prematurely? Really any information you could impart about the process is of interest to me.
OMG - that is all I have to say... PLUS the 5 star rating...
Ur the GOD~~! Andy..
This is the only PS2 game i had finished as a PS2 player for so many years.
Cuz of the awesome gfx(including concept design) & addictive gameplay!...
I am goin to dig up GOW 2 as well. But hold dat horse, i gonna painting more & more after look at ur brilliant concept art which inspired me to work hard instead of play hard.
Thx for uploading! GOW is a gigantic game!
very immaculate work! I love all these! keep posting!
Life is a long lesson in humility.
one2hit: Thanks very much! I'm glad you enjoyed playing the game. We definitely had a blast making it.
TaekwondoNJ: I'm just one of 7 concept artists that contributed to this game. You can check out some of their work on their blogs/websites. I have some of their links on my blog. Check them out!
thundercake: Yup, he's a cute scary little puppy. Thanks!
Mozchopz: Hey, don't worry about me man! I appreciate your concern though.
Nexus: Conceivably a single painting will take about a day or two to complete, but it really is not that simple since my job is not just to paint the character or environment, it's to design the character or environment. So there's ALOT of back and forth between the concept designer and the director. We first will show him a bunch of sketches as possible directions. Then he'll give us input on those and then we might have to do more sketches if none of the initial ones really spoke to him. But if one or two of them do, then we can move forward and maybe bring that sketch to a more polished level. And so forth and so forth. Eventually it will be approved enough to go to color. And then the colors go through the whole approval process. Of course this is just a general scenario we'll go through to complete a character or environment. So with all that said, a character can take from a week to many weeks to get finalized.
As far as advice concerning increasing speed and not getting bogged down with detail prematurely, I would advise you to avoid zooming into the character or environment as much as possible in the beginning stages. Keeping things b/w at the beginning can help alot too b/c then you will mainly concentrate on things such as shape, silhouette, values, etc.
Well, I hope that helps a bit. Thanks for asking!
LePompadoriousFohawk: Thanks man!
dinodog Jr: Thanks! That's the best compliment!
stalsby: I appreciate it! I definitely will!
Congrats on a game well done.
Bough the art book recently. Hope your studio mates would be willing to post here too.
Hey Andy, I sent you an email whiched lapped praise upon you for these, but I'll say it again: amazing work, some of the best concept work for a game I've seen yet.
I was wondering where one could pick the art book up? Is everyone talking about the one that comes in the Limited Edition strategy guide? Or is there another one?
Amazing, just amazing... I hear the game is getting raving reviews aswell, which isn't a surprise with conceptart like this... Congrats.
wow awesome work put into this!

Simply AMAZING! Makes me wish I had a PS2. I am so use to your Tomb Raider style. This is bad ass but no more Top Cow stuff?
Lovely work, bro. I saw the concept book and it's a real inspiration, you guys are definitely rocking! ^_^
I think I'm definitely going to have to hit the Nucleus show!

Heleos: Thanks for the compliment. I appreciate it! Yeah, the artbook is in the Limited Edition strategy guide. You can find it in stores or you can order it online at Brady Games or Amazon for cheaper.
kab: Thanks! yeah, the game is really fun to play. I'm still playing it. I still haven't gone through it all yet. But, I'm having fun.
BOOM!: thanks! The puppy was fun- cute and scary!
Shaddix1980: Thanks! Tomb Raider was great, but I'm loving what I do now. Creating concept art is just too much fun. And yeah, I haven't done any work for Top Cow since then. There's been a handful of times they've approached me to do some more work, but I just don't have alot of time beyond my concept art job. But hopefully in the future.
cannibalcandy: Thanks dude! I'll see ya at the Nucleus show in 2 weeks!
nardsdesign: Thanks! I'm honored to be named alongside those 2 great artists. I haven't drawn or painted Lara Croft in a long time. I probably should just to see how I would interpret her now after all this time.
banhatin: Thanks! Yeah, maybe we will work together one day.
maya_a: Thanks! That was definitely a really fun one to imagine.
brujahbart: You can find it at either some video game store like EB Games, or you can buy it online at bradygames.com or amazon (they're cheaper online).
Thanks everyone! I hope some of you can drop by the Nucleus show on the 12th of May in Alhambra, CA. The rest of the God of War 2 concept artists will be there as well.
You should tell them to post some of their stuff here as well!
I'm your very big fan. I've never imagined that I can find you here, in this forum.

oh fuck, I've just see the 2nd cd of god of war 2.
What a impressionant work!!! O__O
Incredible work. I was just playing God Of War II yesterday, sitting there admiring the designs. It's actually very cool to be 'talking' to the one who created the said designs.
I ADMIRE YOUR WORK!!! Can I ask how you started getting into game concept designs?
wow, ya you guys did a great job on god of war 2 - I definitely feel as though it improved upon the first one. TONS of great creature designs in it. Of these pictures though im definitely partial to the Barbarian King one. Can't wait to see what you guys cook up for GoW3 keep it up man
