Thanks for the feedback jfwalls and evui...I didn't have much time to work on my entry and it shows. Also think I will stay away from dragons in COW's, everyone has a personal vision of what dragons look like and it gets in the way of objectivity.
So many very nice pieces here...Certainly Njoo's is among the best but I don't understand the landslide of votes when I compare it to so many other wonderful entries this week. I just have to grin, shrug and declare incomprehension. I do love the tutorial Njoo, wonderful breakdown.
My vote goes to Ikuru for wonderful colors and textures and design, beautiful treatment of the lava. It's simple but powerful and dramatic.
Thank you for the feedback jfwalls and evui, also Cloister in the original forum. Definately agree details are way to hard to read. Evui, I didn't use the burn tool but I can see what you mean about it having that look, whats missing was breaking the color up and using some more variation with the hues.
It was a close one for me but my vote went with njoo, just love the sense of weight and size this creature has.
This was my first time and this forum is amazing, love it. Glad someones doing this and it's a privilege to be around such talented artists. See you all on the next one.
My vote was for NJOO almost from the start. An awesome piece of work. Although VORACE came in second for me, I just loved the concept and the pic itself, great job !
JFWALLS and EVUI thank you both for the crits ! I love to get feed back, and unfortunately I agree with both of them and knew better on both counts.
Woe to those who attempt to speed their way through drawing !
Thanks again, and I hope to be able to participate in many more COWs.
Njoo all the way. Excellent color, and material definition. What really blew me away was the sense of scale. Fucking lovely. Keep it up!

thnx for ur critics guys!! My concept was rather weak T.T.. will improve on that too.
yea.. im new to painting.. so im still quite dependent on lines O_O haha
i will try to remove them on the next piece and put more effort into it...winged healer! woo..

No problem guys, I love to see feedback whether good or bad, so I'd like to give everyone that same feeling.
Congratulations Njoo. Again! Man, you're kicking some serious ass in here. Gonna have to sharpen the skills some more to keep up.
Vyse: Thanks for the vote! I seem to be building on a trend for myself with the inclusion of other creatures with my COWS. I really appreciate your kind words and support.
Evui: I debated changing that lava over and over again. Knew I should have done it. Thanks for your critique and lovin.
JFWalls: I originaly had streams of lava coming off instead of smoke, but they proved to be too distracting from the creature itself. I guess I need to learn the art of moderation and balance a little better. Any suggestions to help reduce the flatness? Ever since Mike C. and some others tactfully kicked me in the ass on my 50 ton COW, I've been trying to work on atmosphere to suggest depth. I may have gone a little too far with it this time.
Thanks a lot guys for your feedback.
See you next round I hope.
Great work everyone!
Woodlandwalker: Nice creature, I would have liked to see this one a bit larger and maybe a bg. Good job tho.
Chuck, mate.: nice, your piece really conveys an underwater/lava feel to it.
Carnifex: nice creature! good work.
jfwalls: Looks good to me! Maybe a head would add some interest to the creature, other than that it’s all good.
Stephan_R: nice idea and nicely presented, I like the skin burning off that looks great. Good work.
Vorace: Good work.
cannibalcandy: nice one. I like the feeling of depth you created.
VegasMike: Solid piece! Looks good this way but also looked good with the green, I guess this way conveys the concept better.
njoo: Fantastic! Very successful concept. I love your color choices that’s really one of your strengths. Thanks for the tut
Cloister: Nice one!
BlkCelebration: Great I love it! You get my vote for this! Njoo will win and rightly so but you definitely deserve some votes for this.
Sorry if I missed yours but I’m tired and I have to get some sleep.
Scorge: Nothing really wrong with your atmsopheric effect, for me it's just the use of the white smoke to show it. As far as the flatness goes in the back section, that's being caused by the somewhat squished ellipses you've used to make the wrinkly parts.
Ham-e: A head! It's already got a big horn thing. Heh...seriously though, that's a good point. I did have a mouth and eyes on it, but I just thought those would be useless in hot lava. Now I'm thinking maybe I should've kept it. Oh well.
First off, kinda disappointed that my little bro's (monkyd) drawing didn't make it to the voting round. Don't give up man theres always next time!
Oh man got some votes! Thanks GatorKyle, Ham-e, that means a lot since there was some really great pieces this round.
Woodlandwalker: I dig this, nice simple design that works. I preferred the other version of the lava you had going.
JAG.: This one could of used more work but I like the way the image is shown.
Tommoy: interesting design, I like where you were going with it, but it seems that you could of used some more time on the lava part of the concept.
Chuck, mate: Really like yours, close to voting for it. The glowing ridges on the body look awesome.
Carnifex: I kept going back to this, I really like the the design, nice sense of volume on it. Perhaps if you had used the smaller image instead of the other one as your submission.
jfwalls: Creature design is pretty cool, I dig the rider on him too. The angle works great. (I dug your other piece too)
Stephan_R: Great concept idea, nicely rendered. Only crit would be the lava itself.
Kasen Kato: Cool design. I think some highlights would of helped the creature pop up more. The bg is a bit odd though.
Vorace: This one is awesome. The action in this piece makes it stand out, not to mention the concept idea is pretty cool too.
VirtualSurreality: Nice action on this one too, Maybe if you added some of the reddish tones on the lava spurting out.
cannibalcandy: This one rocks, nice perspective and creature design. I know if you had more time it would of been an even better piece.
VegasMike: One mean lookin fish. Great texture work and the background works well with it.
njoo: Voted for this (like most of us) There was a few others that I considered, but all in all this one gave me the best description of the topic. I like the solid look if it, definitely looks to be a lava swimmer to me. Great face on the creature.
Cloister: Another close-to-vote. Really great lighting on it especially on the holes on it side where the light come out. Nice texturing
ikuru: Very elegant pose. Really dig the colors and the fact that you showed it swimming in a very convincing manner.
trickmonkey: some more definition on this one.
Lighty: Nice entry and presentation. I tried to do a perspective like yours at one point, but couldn't pull it off like that.
ChaoticKnight: Great scene on this one. I especially like the blue light hitting the top of it, and the intense light on the bottom.
gnahz: I think the way you drew the lava hurts the creature, which is nicely done.
D-BAKER: This one caught my eye a few times. I like the style you used and the creature itself is pretty cool. I wish you would of drawn it swimming around in some lava.
scorge: Cool that you took the time to draw a whole scene on this piece. It really helps it out. Nice action and lighting.
poinko: Reminds me of pokemon, the background kinda clashes with the creature.
Ham-e: I like the energy on your piece, nice flow to it. I would only suggest that you try to get some more definition where the head and the creature's back is. The head and body tend to blend together a bit (maybe brighten the head some?).
ATAnderson: Cool scene on this one too. Im not too fond of the arm on the foreground like that, it distracts me from the creature. I really dig the lava.
yoitisi: That looks awesome, and done in traditional media makes it even cooler in my book. I really like the skin texture.
Marco Mazzoni: I almost voted for this one too. Best lava in my opinion. The sense of the creature emerging from below really comes across nicely.
Spitch: I like the style you got going on your pieces. I can already recognize it by just looking at the image. Nice lighting, the texture on the furthest fin look cool.
dragon4lunch: This is another image that I almost voted for. Great scenery, the lava looks great, and the creature design is very interesting. Nice use of textures trough out the image.
TomCardin: I really like this one, it has something pleasent about it. The pose works great. I would only say that I liked the previous version of the lava you had going on.
-Ark-: cool perspective, you needed more time on this one though.
Genghis Kwan: Nice and simple, This looks like something out of an rpg concept art. great design.
Nisse-Bula: Good creature design, the floor has something odd about it though, looks like he's caught between the rocks.
amer-nazri: I think the creature lacks definition but it has an interesting design.
Death: This one could of been great, had you had time to finish it. Nice pose and the head looks cool
Borax: I like the textures on it, but it looks a bit flat. Really cool head design.
oooooooh man that took a while. Apologies if I make no sense hope COW keeps going like this, great work everytime!
Once again, stunning contributions, but when I saw njoo's piece I knew that he was going to have my vote.

Vorace got my vote. Really awesome description, and such a finished look over the piece. Thats what i call conceptart dude!
Voted for Njoo, but guess you already know
Chuck,mate second, great piece ^^
Well first of all I wanted to thank everyone for their crits... I was concerned about the background... if you ck back earlier in the thread... I simplified it from a previous suggestion... just didn’t want it to be distracting from the creature... ah well..
cannibalcandy got my vote... Njoo would have been my second... I just really enjoyed the design, and presentation... and wanted to give a vote/credit where it was due (power to the little people!) hehe...seriously... great round tho... lots of fantastic entries. Once again I am humbled in your presence.
big tks to Grimlock for the vote! whoohoo!
Drawing is the honesty of the art. There is no possiblity of cheating. it is either good or bad. ~ Dali
Thanks for the votes...At the moment I'm in fourth place with 3 votes... that must be rare... congrats njoo!
My vote goes to Carnifex this round. His creature is not very specific or unique but it holds something convincing. I usually don't put much weight in logic when it comes to voting or my own entries, but this time that played some part in where my vote finally fell. Carnifex's eyeless, hard and fairly simple "fish" does seem lika a genuine lava swimmer to me, and the variety in texture and subtle blueish lighting works well. Also, the little image in the corner builds some mood, and makes up for the lack of background.
...Marco followed, and njoo and Stephan R was not far behind, either.
(and I have to say; Tom Cardin: That's what I call an update!)
Perhaps I'll comment some further later on.
Thanks allot for the coments and compliments you guys! And to TomC and Saise for your votes! SuperV Im real flattered that you would consider voting for my stuff.
Longshao (actually I did it like real quick, lol, maybe 5 hours all together or something. )
Jf Thanks for the compliment and crit, I get your point, allthough I do think that sometimes simple shapes can verry apeling and dynamic too.
Jfwalls: Thanks for the paintover, guess I should have used some references on the magma. My lava is really dull compared to the real stuff..
Blkcelebration: Thanks for the crit!
Hehehe, I just looked at the poll... I don't know if I've ever seen a COW poll this clearly dominated. njoo let us know if you're going to participate in the new COW round (Winged Healer). Because if you do I might as well stay out of it. Hehehe.
Joking, but humor often has a bit of truth for it to be funny. There is a new rock star in the COW department!

NJOO - I like the solitude personality of the creature. It really looks
like the description is saying. Does it truly exist?
njoo or cloister...ohh who to pick. I love them both.
Yeah my design is similar to Chucks, but I just needed to
post in a C.O.W. I plan to participate more, to fine tune myself.
Great work everyone. cheers!!

So you rather compete against people who are not so great to win more often?Originally Posted by dragon4lunchnjoo let us know if you're going to participate in the new COW round (Winged Healer). Because if you do I might as well stay out of it. Hehehe.!
How about doing this for the fun of it?
The more I think about it, the more I wish I had stayed with my first entry. I personally thought it was a more interesting illustration, and the story tied in with another one of my creatures, the glue maker. So here's a link to The Great Lava Worm of the Fire Plains. for anyone that's interested. I'll re-post the story for it later.
FUCK!! I missed the deadline with the description (((((((( ah well.....there's always next week cudos guys
I voted for Ikuru. The entry is seriously the best one that I have seen from him and I am VERY impressed by the quality....it also really made me think of swimming and the grace swimming creatures have...
Really great work...I can't wait to see what's next for you!
ON another note...this was one hell of a HARD vote! Everyone went above and beyond the call of duty!

And you're welcome!
Thanks for everyone's comment and votes, like some people mentioned, I think maybe the tutorial did affect the vote % a bit, and I'm not sure what to say, sorry if it seemed to caused some unfairness in the round, really didn't mean it to be so T_T I thought there was lots of great entry this round, maybe one of the most entries week recently!
Anyways, as most of you know been busy with the Cow book thing lately, and work, couldn't post comments as earlier as I can (and yes there apparently some issue and conflict with the CA side, but the book's is going on hopefully, just need to work around if differently and figure out some stuff. Thanks everyone for their message and support! I'll be sure to keep u guys posted hehe
Anyways comment time!
Woodlandwalker - I remember yours being one of the first to finish! Can tell you still put effort into it, nice details, and a pretty picture to look at in general Only thing perhaps is that the creature doesn't feel too alive if that makes any sense?
JAG. - Cool pic, maybe would've elaborated a bit more organically, now it has a bit of a mechanical look to it, how the top shell and the bottom part seperates.
Tommoy - Got a nice interesting rocky texture to it! I guess BG doesn't really matter but cuz the color of the bg is a bit desaturated he seems to be laying on some red rocky ground or mud
Chuck, mate. - Vibrant colors, ur colors are always nice and strong and catches attention right away I think the creature and effect works but if it looks like he's swimming inside lava it'd have push the concept even stronger!
Carnifex - This creature has come a long way since the initial sketch Lots of nice efforts on the detail!
jfwalls - It's cool that u did 2 I like the color and mood of this one more, but maybe it'd have been cooler to throw some type od details, etc I guess like u said since it's in lava it doesn't really need much features hehe (the rider's feet sure is touching the lava pretty close haha)
Stephan_R - Always a fan of ur happy colors and friendly looking creatures, I like how the edges have this chipping and burning off look I think it would've been even stronger if u faded the tail even more as it go towards the end to give the pic more depth and show the thickness of the lava!
Kasen Kato - Mentioned before, making the frame same color as the forum and coming out of the frame is cool hehe, pushing the design more would've been even better!
Vorace - Really like the idea, I was thinking of doing something with the ice idea too but u beat me to it! I think maybe another choice of color other then the bright blue to show the ice would still work and might not crash with the orange as much, I just noticed the eyes at the bottom, he's jump out upside down i guess, but it's a nice touch
VirtualSurreality - Nice cute creature! Mmaybe the pink and the lighting choice weakens the intensity of the lava and heat this picture would've had~
cannibalcandy - Love the fact that the creature seems so realistically believable, but I'm sure u can do better then this! (only saying that cuz you know i'm a fan of your work and u kick major ass hehe) From the way you did the head, it feels like the creature could've been a lot longer then how it is now~
VegasMike - Really nice colors and texture, a powerful piece!I think maybe all the cool details spread evenly loses the focus of the piece a bit tho~
Cloister - After a looong time deciding, my vote went to Cloister, really like the approach you had for this, especially the inverted color type lightning, this is probably the most accurate how a creature would look in lava, tho I still can't really imagine it or have anyways of finding the answer hehe. And unique creature design too! Only crit is perhaps it'd be even stronger if u lose even more of the details and loosen the edge towards the tail, would maybe push the focus towards the front even more and show the thickness of the lava~
ikuru - Mentioned before, I think this piece is ur strongest in terms of ur colors and brush work Everything works well I think except for the tip of the mouth, something about it seems a bit off comparing with the body, texture, or shape, I can't pin point it
trickmoney - The design's interesting, and I think u got something nice going on with the mix of the really dark tones and orange, yellow, etc color choices.
Lighty - Awesome for ur first COW hope to see your stuf more! The half underwater half above view is an interesting approach~
ChaoticKnight - Looks great, I think you're coming along well with ur color stuff, ur line art's still stronger but I'm eager to see ur color stuff stand side by side with ur lineart skill, and I'm sure you'd have no problem!
gnahz - Nice simple design, who tattoed that kanji word fire on the poor creature haha The streaks in the bg might be a bit distracting tho~
D-BAKER - Really like the texture here nd I think the composition, etc work, and is a nice illustration/postcard, concept wise I think it could be push further, but as of now, it's still a cool style!
scorge - Really like the creature, and the details u put in is great, could really feel the mass, etc only thing is maybe the splash effect is a bit rough and weakens the piece a little bit~
poinko - Cute whale, not sure if the bg works, maybe a simple black bg would push the lava effect and the creature's color out more.
Ham-e - It's a nice design, if ur exaggerated the flame effect and making the streaks more wild and trailing more it'd give the creature an extra touch of dynamic and power~!
ATAnderson - A good piece overall, thos in this illo, I can't really make out the creature's anatomy, I think his arm's reaching out to the land, but at the same time the distance and placement of the shoulder doesn't look like it ~
yoitisi - Cool style and the touches of white u used was great~!
Marco Mazzoni - Awesome pic, really like the lava inside the mouth, it got a great sense of scale, the mood, etc is awesome. Only crit is that it seems that the lava under the chin, the perspective seems a bit strange, the curve might be a bit more horizontal or maybe it's how the monster's position is. (I suck with perspective stuff hehe)
Spitch - Great lighting and mood, the black works well for the creepy mood, but it also cost the pic, not being able to see some cool details this creature might have~
dragon4lunch - Definately could tell u spent effort on this piece and it looks great and got a unique style to it, something about the way it floats and the current pose, it looks a bit non-living and a bit too much like a boat I think the pole also cuts off the picture a bit too vertically, slanting it would give the pic more flow imho~
TomCardin - Nice chilling dragon, is he flinging his snot with his pinky? I think I liked it more when the bg was a bit more simple tho, more focus to the dragon
-Ark- - Nice design! The 2nd half of the body is a bit confusing, fading it out into the depth could work better
Genghis Kwan - Finally forced u to join COW haha, nce rocky texture but I know u can do better with the design tho!
BlkCelebration - I really like this creature! The fat goofiness expression is great! Is that a horn on the head, cuz what're those red veins and the forn seems to be fading out?
Nisse-Bula - Wow that's some smooth and clean rendering, it's a unique style, only crit maybe is the way the creature connects with the lava, it seems like it's a bit stuck in cement atm
amer-nazri - Interesting silhouette and design, not sure if the dark red bg feels really like lava and takes the attention from the creature perhaps?
Death - Cool creature, look nice, except the blurring at the top is a bit strange atm (I think you were trying to do smoke and the intense heat effect?)
Borax - The rendering now seems a bit flat but at the same time it gives is a unique cool paper cut out effect, whether u intended it or not
Whew done.... better get some sleep Not sure if I got time for the next round, I got few ideas but I can't figure out a way to execute it well, so ya.... I'll try some doodles if it doesn't work out, I guess I have to pass, and maybe get some of my real work done Can't wait to see everyone's art for the Winged Healer! C ya!
