damn how can u always post so much! oO
nice stuff again. that nintendo ds ones seem to be fun lol i wish i had one too! how long did you spend on them and are they 100% size? some more details would be fine
i also like that skull. nice lightning. just that green color doesnt work as good as the other two on the left side.
dont have to crit much lol except i see that u still tend to make the hands and feet too small on your life drawings but except that, great work! i like that cage man a lot, also the portrait on the last post keep it up dude
Hi man, cool to see that you keep on this. Your evolution is amazing. Great sculpture there, have you tried zbrush? I find it better than mudbox, way more complete (you have zspheres, retopology features, it can manage more polyface count, and you can also do polypainting). But since mudbox have been aquired by Alias, you never know.
Also, you are showing the world the benefits from drawing from life, great stuff man, very inspiring!
Thanks for stopping by in my SK to start with.
You have some nice studies here. Pretty nice 3D things and stuff. Nice to see. Looking good. Keep it up!
Yo dude, back in business!!!
There's like a lot of updates that I missed man, and you're really piling in the work lol, good job.
The only comment I can think of offhand (since I'm so close to plastering my face on my keyboard) is that next zbrush sculpt that you have? That monster thing? Well, I would suggest thickening the neck, and probably changing the chin a bit, so that it doesn't taper downward.
Reason is, you've got some really wide and powerful looking shoulders there man, it's really tough and masculine looking. Looks to me like he could punch through concrete walls with his pinky. But then his neck and his face starts to look a bit feminine compared to his shoulders, which kinda throws the dramatic impact off a bit lol.
I relooked at the pic, and it's not that the neck isn't thick enough, it's just that it tapers too much at the top lol. Well, I hope I make sense. System shutting down haha.
Sawa I hate when you are always right , j/k. Now on I will make the hand and feet size my top priority when doing Life Drawing. With the Nintendo DS, they are really fun to do. You can zoom in till 4x times, and normal resolution are 512 x 512. If I have Wi Fi enabled (which I don't have yet) I can get pics of 1024x1024. Time wise, it takes me an hour or 2, I am not the most focused person in the world, blame the internet! hehe Though, the face took me around 4 hours because I keep changing it to try to get it right.
joaKimArt Thanks for the comments
lennon Been a while a man, but nice to have your feedback again. With the Zbrush and Mudbox thing, currently I totally agree with you on that one, I like the extra features that Zbrush like the retopology and especially the Polypainting, that one helps a lot for doing texturing. The main reason I am using Mudbox is because this is part of a senior project which requires the use of a new technology/software. I'll definitively switch to Zbrush completely after this project is done
CouchPotato Good advice on the character, I feel now that I have to go back and fix it. Though, main problem is that my UV mapping is really screw up since I won't be texturing this thing. Seems I need to do another final character soon....
So another update, been playing a lot with the DS colors lately. I will start using it more to paint from life since because of its portability provides a nice and loose way to explore color, hence I won't be detailing too much. The first one is done from life while the other two from pics. I have a thing for goriness, like doing texture stuff like that. I will stick to paint from life from now on.
Last one is a WIP of some portrait assignment. Not sure what my intentions or final goal is with it, just cranking out what works. It still needs a lot of refinement and probably add a face gesture to some of them. The profile and standing figure are done from photos while the other two from the mirror. I will try to get rid somehow of the blank space on the lower right corner.
Great idea that of making a portrait from different POVs. I think I'll try that one.
Lennon Thanks man, glad it motivate you to do one
Just more practice using DS colors. I am painting from life, trying to practice more with colors. Usually, the normal resolution painted on the screen is 4 times smaller than the actual picture, that's why at real size looks very unrefined. Though right now, the focus is on colors than refinement
This hand on the right is fucking awesome. That's one of the best drawings of a hand I've ever seen. Rock on dude!
Some criticisms: I'd say that you should pay very careful attention to the figures (models) that you are drawing. Some of them seem a bit off. Their body parts don't seem to match up with other body parts, and then the body, as a whole, seems "funny-looking". I'd say that you need only pay carefully attention to each body part as it relates to another and then how it relates to whole. One good way to do this is to take a step back from your drawing every now and then just to make sure everything is in proportion.
Whatever you do man, don't stop. Keep it up. Love to see more!!!
nice to see all that color stuff around here hehe gonna be interesting to look at all the improvement if you keep up with it!
the ducks and the leg are great so far, also the corridor in the last post. (that leg is really disgusting though lol... i better stop eating now before it goes the other way round... thx for that! )
btw that idea with the portraits is really nice maybe i'll try that out too hehe
dont have much more to say by now, time is rare keep it up mate!
Peetaer Hey man, I get what you mean about my figures, that's something I should try more often. Thanks for the suggestion, I will practice it more now.
Gnoll Thanks man.
Sawa hahaha, at least I save you some food now! j/k
Dimagyan Gracias por los consejos y avisos camarada. Es grato verte por estas areas/ Thanks for the words man, nice to see you stopping around here.
So more DS colors practice, it becomes very handy when you want to attend presentations and instead of listening it becomes more fun to draw the people around you hehehe. Those were done from life, and the second one I just experiment doing some life drawing (painting?) with the DS during an extra class session. The colors are not well but sure it was interesting.
Also a couple of Life Drawings, haven't been done too much lately because of the self portrait assignments. Kinda screw up the one in red and on the other orange one, I try checking at my best the relationship in proportions between the hand and head, considering Sawa's early observation about hands being small in my figures. But I did check!!
Finally, an update on my Self portrait assignment, the picture angle is not a good one since I took this really fast on my way out . There are some subtle colors in some faces, and I still don't know how to play around with them since I was trying to have a black and white piece (must get out of that confort zone hehehe)
hehe i love the idea of the hand with the pencils as a space filler in the portrait assignment! also the expression of the bottom one is great
youre going in the right direction with your hands i see. especially on the ds figure painting the proportions are quite good. i think on the portrait you should make the whole arm + hand bigger though
oh and go on with the figure drawings and life painting your figures are improving a lot!
Sawa Hey thanks for the suggestion about the hand, it really helped a lot in the composition
So this been the final week of the semester, so I am posting my last life drawings for now until next semester. Finally finished the self portrait thing, and since it was 4 am when I have to add something in the BG, I add random stuff that might have killed it hehehe.
The figure on the beach is part of a figure on a environment assignment which is very self explanatory. Lastly, I added a quick 15 min DS COLOrS sketch I did of somebody in the computer lab.
Uploading some other of my final life drawings from the semester. There were about 2 to 3 hour poses each.
Also, since I was finally done with my Mudbox project, here I share the last sculpture (it looks very Jason 13 like) as well as turntable animation of the skull I previously did. Click on it to open it up.
bad to hear your life drawing sessions are over :/ i wish i could take some, theyre really good practice
the last 2 life drawings are looking good!
on the post before i think the bottom one with the woman lying at the beach is somehow off... it looks more like some kind of plates, the volume is not really showing... hope u guess what i mean
i love the skull project though very well balanced colors and stuff!
lol and the last one really looks like jason!
keep it up mate i guess i'll be able to reply more often afer christmas since i'll have all the tests and crap at school behind me for 2 weeks yeah
I can't see the sculpture (?).
Your drawings are looking sharp!
Hey man, I got to see the sculpture, sorry for not replying earlier. It WAS very Tuesday 13! What is it that you're working on? a video game?
Anyway, keep the good work.
Sawa Hey mate, thanks for the feedback so far. Yes, I see what you mean about the lack of volume, probably got distracted with colors. Don't worry about replies, take your time and enjoy the holidays
Lennon Glad you could see it. Regarding your question, I guess you are referring to my Mudbox sculptures, those were made for a project about digital sculpting. It is over now but it was fun to do.
Haven't done too much lately. Gotta work on this LMS piece. So here is some stuff. Since I am out of school for a few weeks, no life drawing these days so I just draw my friends while they play videogames, they turned out a bit crappy but hopefully they will get better
The trash can DS COLORS painting was done while being on standby at the airport. Good study for reflections.
Also, here I share this link to an animation I made as a final project with a couple of friends. While I didn't do any of the character modeling, I did the animations for the shots, dunks and last dunk move:

Dude, it's been awhile, sorry I haven't been on as much, but you know what I was working on haha. Anyhow, thanks for dropping by. You've got a whole lotta stuff up while I was away lol, that's really great! I like that trash bin. You did it while on standby in the airport? Painted that in a laptop or something? haha.
Anyhow, cheers mate, see you at Seattle!
(Which reminds me, I think I totally forgot about that self portrait haha. OK gonna work on that!)
great work man. consistent and dedicated. One thing I can say about the pencil work is that you are missing the contrast. It needs ultra darks and ultra brights. that will make it less flat and give a nicer sense of depth. Cool stuff man
nice stuff dude. like the life drawings. youre doing well on the proportions
also the bin looks great! this reflection stuff is really some bad crap lol, i never get it right! but u did a good job here
btw can we see your LMS piece somewhere? im really curious about that hehe
cya dude and have a great time at seattle
CouchPotato Actually, that trash bin one was done on my DS, it's really fun and convenient. I'll show you over there. See ya in Seattle soon!
marioucci Thanks for the observation. I understand what you mean about pushing values for depth. I usually do that when I have plenty of time for a drawing and can use many pencils
Sawa Cheers mate. That reflection thing was more detailed than I thought and took some time getting it like that, glad it was during standby. About the LMS piece, I wish I could show it here but it is against the rules so it will have to wait some.
So it's been a while, to be honest got caught on the holidays and haven't draw that much. I did spent sometime fixing some old paintings done during last year and as much I could improve them further, it's time to move on to new ones.
Still working some on the LMS piece, I got into a creative block for it so I better catch up hehehe. So meanwhile, even if I won't finish it on time, I did some rough sketch for the CHOW 100. It is a WIP and has a lot of anatomy errors now until I look to some reference. Probably will finish it sometime later.
It was cool meeting up with you too, even though I didn't get to enjoy the Flat Tire... I had to make do with 'Moonlight Pond' or whatever it was called! I'll update soon and will be keeping an eye on your sketchbook too!
Dude! Post some stuff so I can crit! (yeah right lol, you're a bullet train compared to my speed in recent days :p)
nice update, i really dig how the 2nd piece is coming out well the car is awesome hehe also the colos look much better after u reworked it!
hope u both had a great time at the workshop! would be great to see what you guys were working on there
Halfmonk Thanks man. Really glad on meeting you, to be honest wasn' very amazed by the flat tire, don't think youm miss much hehehe. Hopefully, see you around more often.
CouchPotato Yeah man, it was about time. Thanks for all the crit on the LMS piece.
Sawa Thanks buddy. Yep, it's time to work hard now
Rist Thanks for the tip. Definitively worth checking out.
It's been a while and it was time to update. Learned so much from the Workshop and got good observations of where to go and where to improve. It was such an amazing and great experience. One of the most important things was figure construction and drawing from Mr. Kevin Chen. Now I realize a big mistake I have been making, which has been on drawing on what I see instead of actually observing and learning from it, especially in my life drawings. That's why, I will start on hitting Bridgman hard and among other things
I also was busy with my LMS piece as well. There are a lot of great entries and so much awesomeness on that thread on the FF section. Better check it out!! Anyways, here I post a Black Frog sketch I did over at the Workshop as well as different version of my LMS including the final. I used this pic as ref for the girl . IREF. Once said that, I realize I copy way too much the ref and it had become a crutch in my growth, so I will start avoiding that from now on
Im glad you went to and got inspired by the workshop...I'm still ashamed I didnt make the effort, especially since it was close to where I live.
Great progress on the new one. One thing I will suggest in means of improvement would be to focus on surfaces...there are many different materials here but they all feel mainly the same. The concrete for example feels more like cloth because it is blurry - however it could be an out of focus BG...the hair could have a lot more contrast since its naturally light reflective. Cast shadows may have placed the characters in space in relation to each other and the wall, judging by the light direction.
Anyways, nice great progress and trash can! see you around
Hey Maestro, I also attended the workshop and got much out of it...So much inspiration everywhere there...I like your paintings...This last one is cool, I like your DS paintings as well! I just got colors up and running on mine your paintings make me want to go paint on it now haha! Keep it up!
