Yo man, lotta fun color stuff goin on in here. You definitely go for the gusto with your palettes. Keep that up. Try and get as much life drawing as possible at VCU. The models there are a resource I wish I had taken more advantage of. Keep drawing everyday, it's lookin good.
Four hours and a horrible sun burn later, this was my entry to the contest. I was running out of time and black chalk, they thats why the word are so sloppy. But such is life.(And last years entry, just for fun)
Razael: Thank you for the compliment!
D@niel: Thanks! No I didnt place this year. My pirate one got my second place last year, but I have been continuously beaten by people who would rather blindly copy a photograph and do nothing creative at all.
A few scribbles: First one was mirrored in ps, and is slated for some heavy inks.
Great creatures and nice sketches!
I saw your earlier comment in jan 18th about being afraid of contrast; Especially if you're using photoshop, there's no reason to be afraid-- just make a new layer, slab on some dark values and if you dont like it, just paint over it or delete that layer. Digital medium is the perfect tool for you to experience and delve into the unknown without much consequences, so throw away any hesitation and just go for it!
I like to make sure i have a nice range by adding in a touch of pure black/darkest darks and lightest lights as i progress, so that i can compare the rest of the image to it and maintain a steady range. It can help to adjust Levels and stuff of the whole image when you're near completion (though like any other editing tool, dont abuse it!) The contrast really helps your image pop out, so be sure to use it well!
As for images such as your skull cg, cool job ! Id suggest to go back and paint some over the lineart as well, or at least change the lineart colors, so that its not just hard, cartoony lines over a 3d rendered surface. That way a more blended approach to a lineart cg would look more natural.
Hey whats up, man just went through your sketchbook and i see much progress, I really like your character designs, your are rendering the form correctly just push the values a bit more and i think you will be alright. keep working hard!!
