(Now I got it in the right forum!)
Hi. This is a biomech robot/creature I'm working on. The crap on it's back is just temporary. I'm have this idéa of adding a third leg/arm, since it's balance is all fucked up now, supporting that big head and all that nonsense on it's back with only those legs/arms.
Regarding the backpack thing, I want it to be very retro, old 50's, 60's & 70's kinda designed details, and maybe a mounted weapon of some sort but then it
has to look like a tommygun or a m14 welded in place. Anyone got any good source of that kind of retro stuff on the web?
I want the wire to be a curled telephone wire but I haven't figured out a easy way to do that with shapes in photoshop.

The rendering is great on this so far but it's really hard to see what forms are coming forward and which ones are retreating. It took a while to see his backpack and his head as seperate forms.
I know you're going for a lot of bright ambient lighting (as opposed to the local lighting which gives all those neat dark shadows) but you might want to consider giving certain parts (especially the back pack) darker shadows to show us what's in front of what.
Good going though, can't wait to see what this becomes
I like it so far. The main issue I have is with the eyes, they look rather flat and don't really bring the character to life. I'd try to sort them out before continuing.
As for the backpack, I like the idea of possibly having a smaller version of himself (a child maybe) on his back or even a different creature. It doesn't really look like the type of creature that would carry a weapon.
EDIT: Also, considering the legs, the one on the left seems to have 3 main muscle masses, whereas the one on the right looks more like a human arm with 2 main muscle masses. Also, the leg on the right looks thicker.
Makoblue you're right. I find it tricky to really make them look like lenses burried in the head... they get to diffuse. This is a more high-contrast approach at it. Regarding the arms: yeah I know I'm kinda new to figure drawing...
Concerning the design principles of the arms and muscles, I was thinking of something like this:
And regarding the big searchlight in the forehead, well... could come in handy when it's VERY dark...
I think that it is a vespa from hell. I wouldn't want to try and ride that thing. Any way I like what you have there. I am bothered by three main things. First, the headlight is straight forward when its head is not. Second the arm that you drew for your example of the design principle is better than the arm you have in your piece. Third the background if a little too bright. you might want to go to a mid value for it instead a high value. it makes it easier to see where your highlights darks need to be. Now don't take this all the wrong way I do like you drawing. I think that it will turn out rather nicely.
