I was messing around with some capture software though, I've got to fix some things on my PC before I could do it but sounds viable for sure. I'd like to do more demos, but only if it isn't a waste of time O_O, we'll see.

Edit: I've been getting some questions about blending. Besides just using a soft brush, keep in mind what a blend really is - a junction (junction? whaa?) of two shapes, it's all about edges. Try using a soft brush but not actually painting with the center, paint with the sides and edges - also try a large large brush at times - again, just using it lightly and with the edges.

Ok, evildisco asked if I would do a little demo on how I've been doing my sketches lately so he it is;
Step one: The lines
I've only recently started up with drawing again, I'm starting to get the hang of it. This was a pretty simple sketch though, just a junk tube floating in nothing on one layer and the figure on another. what you see breaking up the white is where I lasso'ed and reproportioned a bit.
I've recently had the the idea to paint directly onto photo textures - mostly wood. This stems from painting on colored grounds and messy digi junk as well as ... well painting on wood with actual paint . So on the vine part you can still see the photo texture popping out, over it is a kind of base coat for the sky. Both layers are done underneath the lines, lines set to multiply.
Not much changed - just adding 'build-up' to sort of help with variety, add depth, interest and that jazz. Using mainly a brush I stole from BaRONTiERi... From here an up everything was done above the lines on normal layers.
Scribbled some clouds down, well - I thought a bit about comp of course. Having the clouds on their own layer allowed be to be quick and ignore edges, later I went in (still quickly) with the eraser and erased the bits I wanted to be in front of the clouds and the figure - since I had lost that.
Not much to see here, just blocking in some color - idea is to use 'proper values' on the 'proper' planes... @_@
Polished the figure a little, just a little smidge of polish elsewhere. Added a cat on a seperate layer so I could play with his position; I had him on the umbrella for a little bit hehe. Also used color balance as I wasn't completely happy with the colors. Sometimes I will use color balance and other editing tools during the process and not just at the end if I'm not happy or change my mind. I included this edit as an adjustment layer in the psd if you wanted to take a closer look. Also, sharpened for web and reduced size.
Erhm, this will go down in a few days. Need to find a better hostage. Anyways - psd is 25% res to reduce file size. A few more layers than I usually use to keep things in 'steps' so you can see them. Also didn't collapse much either.

Man Im trying, trying hard... my greatest problem is finding the right colors to use consistantly on my paintings, do you have a palette set up for skin tones, metal tones..etc..?? can you share it?
you can PM me is you wish, also check out the netmeeting software for windows, it allows you to do a meeting with multiple people at the same time, so you can share your process with whom ever wants to join the meeting, it would allow you to show your desktop to everyone, talk on the mic, and answer questions as you go, and it would also allow you to gain control of a members computer, so you can just grab their brush and show them your self.
( I can see that happening-give me the freakin brush you noob)
Im not an expert on it or anything, just a sugestion- maybe make a business out of it..hell Id pay good money to see you at it...(...er..painting that is)

Palette? No, I don't use them - colors need to come from the head otherwise you will be coloring the same things under the same conditions. What you need my friend is a healthy dose of color theory; go find Andrew Loomis's Creative Illustration (out of print, but I'm sure you know you can find it online ) and read the section on Color - I wish I had known about that when I was first figuring out color. Also, perhaps check out the Peer Project Thread in my signature - trying to 'teach' some color theory and how I go about things in there as well.

Cool man, as soon as I replace my OS harddrive I'm going to try and get some video demo's up (long story, basically no room to cache). I'll check out this netmeeting stuff too; sounds complicated though - I'd rather paint

You'll need a program to unpack .RAR files to decompress this. WinRAR is what I use and it's Free! (Well, basically...)
Source video turned out at just under a whopping 500mb's, before I tried to recompress it codec wise (which would result in a loss in quality anyways) I compressed it with WinRAR and it turned out at about 30mb! Pretty crazy. So, 100% working resolution with minimal artifacting at 30mb isn't that bad. (Just make sure you've got room to unpack 500mb's.
Ok, nothing special really ... just messing around while testing out this video capture software. I think(?) this is in real time, minus some editing to chop out the brainstorming tangents that lead nowhere...
(some new free host, I dunno ... file should stay up longer, wonder how their speed are?)
Should probably have another one up soon.

I have familiarized myself with the PS Brush engine and custom brush making and such. But I've noticed you have some incredible textured brushes in your palette. What do you find is the best way to get started on these? Scanning random textures, cutting apart nature photos? If you would, could you give an example?
And thanks again, all this stuff is so great. I've been reading the Loomis color section and it's blowing my mind (in a gentle kind of way) :.
Well, for the most part the brushes I have created are all in PS - though several that I use these days are from Bumskee's set that I know are from photographs.
To get started, I would do just as you see in the beginning of the video demo. Slap some texture together, Use overlay multiply - anything you can to get dirty. Cut out, erase - use levels sharpen or blur. Don't worry too much about the shape or what you will use it for. Then select your 'brushhead' and create the brush. Play with the settings in the brush menu and see what you can come up with. Most of the time I try out a brush and the uses only come after 'random' experimentation. Though there are times when I will specifically create a brush - usually much simpler with more direct uses. Or times that I will create just another random shape brush - nice and dirty like.
I would probably download Bumskee's brushset (search through his sb), BaRONTiERi's (atelier section of his website) and m@'s (ex. sb here at CA) - play around with these and disect how they are controlled via the brush options.
Let me know, maybe I can make something up really quick - custom brush video or something.

Not entirely sure what you mean and/or how to demostrate these.
1: combining colors - don't, or if you do make sure you use at least three colors. Blending 2 colors isn't going to cut it. Elaborate on what you want please?
2. Hmm, chrome eh? There is an activity in the PPv2 (link in sig) that has you work on matte, medium and glossy surfaces - chrome is just really glossy. Highlights and reflections abound and are very concentrated and contained. Elaborate again perhaps?
4. Not sure, what do you mean different materials? Really the differences are in terms of local color, lightsource color and surface quality. I.e. glossy vs matte, smooth vs textured. There are of course other properties that are important such as translucentcy - refraction etc ... but yeah, I need to work on those...
5. Erhm... I dunno?
