That portrait of your pops is excellent. I like how the perspective on the glasses and the rendering just make it jump off the page. Looks as though the Nerdrum studies have been really helpful :.

Fireflower - I try to follow form, lines become thicker and more frequent in darker sections. I think the idea of hatching is netting form.

Zynic - I haven't rendered anything fully but I've thought about experimenting with underpainting (in watercolors). I'll have something up eventually.

Stunning updates as per usual, the watercolour and pen studies are on a whole new level, qute beautiful.
I think the stilllifes are still the weakest of your strongsuits in their lack of definition/wateriness, especialy compared to the last few portraits.
Shit I gotta get the dust of my watercolour set and do something with it (no watercolours done since october )

Sirgreensock - I know what you mean on the still lifes. But even as they lack definition, I feel they're a little more bold than the figurative watercolors (because of care in getting a likeness). I'll be working to find a medium.
Another one of my mom. It's a likeness but a totally flat use of the medium.
I think it comes from getting comfortable and confident with your color pallet. If you look back at my sketchbook you'll see me being very monotone and reserved. Also, realizing that these are just studies and not the Mona Lisa will, hopefully, get you less attached to getting it perfect and let you be more adventurous.Originally Posted by Listing

What attracts me to certain elements of my own work and what attracts me to your work. It's the abstractions and the mistakes we all make that develop into style and the confidence to leave those mistakes alone. It's funny most of the things i like about said artists are the things they have no control over. it's the sporadic things they do which can never truly be reproduced consciously. some of the abstractions happening in your most recent watercolors and the gesture studies would most likely be tightened up and sterilized if you had more time to work on them. I tend to do the same thing. Sometimes a small time limit is a blessing in disguise.
