This is a picture of Yorda from ICO I did about 3 or so years ago and back then I considered it finished. But I'm really not happy with it because I know that everything but the character was a rush job.
Now I'm planning on making prints of this because it has been requested, but I would first like to correct the sloppiness.
Mainly: the lighting, I would like it to match the figure so it actually looks like she's in the environment without changing her. I would still like her to be on a grassy cliff over looking the ocean.
Any tips, suggestions or paintovers would be greatly appreciated. And if you feel the need to point anything else out that would be great too. (like her legs still kinda bother me)
I really dig this, ICO is one of the best games i have ever played.
If you want her to fit more into the environment (or get more the ICO feeling) you should try to make the landscape alot brighter.
Is this image cropped or do you see more of the sea? because i think that would be good if you could gaze out a little over where she is looking, it feels a little crammed right now.
But i dont know how the client wants it, just some suggestions
Good luck and its a beatiful peice, makes me wanna try out some ICO painting.
Hehe, you should do some ICO painting, there really isnt enough out there. The game definately deserves more.
There'd be no problem increasing the width of the picture to show more ocean, and the cliffs being lighter too. I cant really tell what time of day it is judging from the lighting on her..I'm not sure how light the cliffs would be.
Thanks for the suggestions.
i would make the shadows darker..... the enitre figure is a little muted... the entire piece would benifit from a stronger contrast.
Ah you bring up a good point. Because the game has its fair share of contrast.
Here are some screens:
I did want to get the same feel. I'm still very confused as to what condition the sky should be in.
awsome picture, never had the chance to play the game though. I may not know anything about the feeling your trying to give it, in realtion to the game but..that big grey cloud looks too..well, cumulus like, I'd add some..variations to the cloud, such as some whisps going off in different directions, and possibly tone it down a bit. : ) lookin good tho.
Q1, what's ICQ? I'm a gamer, but I've never heard of it.
Q2, are the last 2 pics from the game? Becase they look like 3d models for game, very low polygon and ok texture job.
Your painting looks a lot better. However, you still have some work to do. Right now, your piece looks flat because your color selections are all in the same value. It looks nice and soft, but has no depth. Your figure (which is suppose to be a main figure) is part of the backgound at the moment. The futher the distance = less saturate and the closer = more saturate.
AH very good points. Perhaps I will tone down the clouds and make the sky cooler, add more contrast to the foreground and se ehow that looks.
@adummai - Ico was a very under the radar PS2 title that is now in their greatest hits collection. It may look a bit dated because it came out during the ps2's first or second year..I'm not sure. It was definately an artistic game drawing from gothic horror novels for its imspiration. Made by the same people who made Shadow of the Colossus =)
I agree. Infact I think there is just too much going on on the left side of the picture. I do like what you've done with the colors. SO I tried this:
I also tried a 5pm kinda sky picture just to see what it'd look like.
I think there might be a serious lack of diagonals in both.
