Hi Everyone. I have been lurking about for sometime, reading and getting back into drawing. More importantly I am the director for an arts organization that does outreach to community locations at libraries, schools, etc. I am going to be starting a class on sequential art, since I have been getting phone calls and emails from kids asking for a "cartooning class", I know that will eisener is the god father of sequential art and I plan on basing my approach from his book, BUT I also want to give these kids as many viewpoints as I can.
It's a 6 session class that runs for an hour each session.
So my questions to all of you very talented and knowledgable people is this - What texts would you recommend I become familiar with before the class?
I would like to suggest some reading for these kids that they can do research on while not in class. What would you suggest?
I'm trying to cram as much as I can into 6 weeks, but do not want to overwhelm them. Is it possible?
Thank you ahead of time for your ideas, comments, thoughts and suggestions!
I have nothing to offer, but I do have thanks. I am in highschool myself (10th) in Sarasota, Florida (Or close to it.), and despite the fact I go to an "arts" charter school, we never have ANYTHING like this going on. I want to thank you on behalf of a whole lot of art students who love to have people like you teaching skills like this.
I only hope some of the younger ones will remember and appreciate the experience as fully as they can.
Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud. It will help with exactly what the title says. In every way.
Ars Longa, Vita Brevis
