I'm finally done with this character concept. He is a ex-general of the KNIGHTS Templar. He is pissed off and he is wearing skull of a creature named baphomet which the historical Knights Templar were accused of worshipping by the church and others at in the fourteenth century.
No blood or cuts, he's just battle ready, not battle damaged. Umm, used all PS and started in grayscale then added some more detail and such with color. Referenced the "muscle armor" from roman and medevil general armor. Designs and markings are all based on tradtional and more occult templar iconography. Used a reference for the legs also. Intrested to know what you guys think. C&C I do like.[
Looking good. I like the references to roman armor and the attention you paid to smaller details like insignias and tattoos. Watch those hands though. Look at your own hands and try to mimic that pose in front of a mirror to see how the fingers and knuckles work when gripping something like that. Little things like that will bump up the level of quality greatly.
It’s good that you stuck with it and it certainly paid off. Keep at it. It’s good when you always have higher expectations of yourself.
I find the midsection to be too big and his right leg is abit off. Other then that its cool.

Exo: I think you have seen the whole developmental process of this character and I'm glad you like it. I had your one crit in mind regarding, the tatoos, insignia, and such you posted in the critque center. Yeah like I said I only referenced the legs so I should really use one for the hands, I guess I thought they looked right but I will ref for sure. And yeah, I am trying to push my self very hard and become alot better this year. I have one more year left of school and I want some things for my portfolio athough alot will be 3-d models my true passion(that souns corny) is concept art.
TGFX: Yeah, I thought the mid section was a tad big too, then I slimmed it down and my friend was like no, no, no, his portortions are good their but I'll try a happy medium. I totally see what you are seeing though. And about the right leg I think it could use some slim'in too.
Good C&C guys!
Here is some of the concept ideas/designs for anyone else that is interested.Peace.
It looks to me like you used dodge/burn to do your highlights and shadows, maybe you haven't but since the colors look very muddy I assume so. I would suggest a more varied colorpalette, some reds in the skin and maybe alittle blue in the shadows. If you painted away the black edges on his swords they would look sharper.
The knee on the leg behind him looks a bit to much twisted, the knee should probably face more toward us, but you used reference on that one I see now, so I might be wrong.
His head is really small to, but maybe you were going for that effect?
As character designs go, I'm sorry but I'm not terribly fond of this one. First of all, the whole peace seems to have no harmony. Secondly alot of it appears to be very flat. like it's missing any sign of perspective. maybe you spent a lot of time on the coloring and such and missed some of the broader details, I don't know, but the way the holes in the armor for his arms seem to be facing the viewer directly almost and that's just an anatomical anomoly. Also the right leg, as previously commented is rather off, and the arm band seems to be growing out of the skin as opposed to encasing it, and the skirt doesn't have any organic flow at all. anyway.... that's just a few things I noticed. Not trying to be harsh, just trying to eb honest.
id say the swords look edgeless, not terrible intimidating, and metal is usually more contrasty i think
Kapturowski: No dodge and burn used but I did do it in grayscale first so that is probably why their are harsh blacks and whites. I really need to improve my coloring and I really havent developed a good working method in PS for doing so. The swords though, I think I can handle and will fix them. Yes, the head is ment to be small, both to show off his size and so the helmet is not soo huge.
Red Chaplin: I love that you are honest. A couple of questions though about your crits...(I'm still learning etc..)
1)Are you not fond of the character from a design and or rendering perspective?
2) Why does my image have no harmony? Is it the lack of backround, some inconsistancy, color? what exactlly?
3) When you say that it is missing any signs of perspective what are you referring to? Seriouslly what signs are you looking for. I am not a master of perspective but I can't find inacurate perspective. How would you change things like the holes holes in the armor which are anatomic anomolies?
4)Andthe skirt, is there a better way I should render the armor to make it seem more organic or is the placement and such. They are thick leatherstraps so i figured that they would not move much in stride
If anyone could answer any of this I think I could learn more and I will give you a dollar. Not really, but I need some more insight and possibly some tricks or examples of other peoples working methods in coloring. I rented Carlos Huante's creature painting but it was not very helpful. He is great but the dvd was really more of a showcase than a learning process.
The world needs more BADASS CHARACTERS with muscles. Seriously. They are needed like lawyers.
To make him EVEN MORE BADASS:
-learn brush economy
-learn spanish armory of the 13th and 14th century
-learn learn learn
-and your characters will prosper to
what marko said. i couldnt have said it any better. but then again i taught him everything he knows. about the ways of greek love any way.-c36
FUCKIN BADASS DOOD!!! BAD ASS!!!! HXC YO!!! STRAIGHT UP FREEEEAAALLL!!!!
no other character is as bad ass man. YOU WIN DOOD!
Do you have a tutorial for making BADASS characters???
YEA MAN! what da Brokencow said, DAT SHIT IS DOPE SON!
Can't wait till ur next post dood!
Marko Your right man I wish I had you as a teacher. The legs on my "badass" character were referenced from your rendition of Juggernaut which was quite "badass". I got a long way to go but I won't ever give up until I am the best I can be. I'll keep in mind everything you wrote.
Cartoonfox: He He.
El Coro: That sounds nice.
waronmars: At first my ego gets a liitle hurt but that only lasts a second. Then I try to learn and have an open mind. Once I realise my mistakes I become really motivated to do better, to be better.
B]Brokencow & Lemai I know you guys are fucking with me. It made me laugh. Not really though, Marko was more funny, you guys are just kinda following what he said like its a cool trend. I know you guys are sick of seeing "badass" characters with muscles who is the chosen one etc...etc.. but I kinda just wrote badass for the title so people would look. Honestlly I'm sick of ultimate badass character cliches as well. Its alright with me if you think this character is badass though, I can't help creating all intrisically badass images.
Can't really give an tutorials because you need to be a badass yourself to create badass material. Anyways that was a joke and it wasnn't funny either(fuck) so yeah, later.
Anyone else, crit away, I like both constructive and semi-retarded groupie elite posts which make me merry.(fuck)
Happy St. Patty's Day everyone!

really liked the bone wagon that you showed once. also think that the older concepts looked better.the one with the bones and chains.
maybe put him in another pose. and perhaps do something to the presenting background layout, instead of a white background?
the armor is confusing and doesnt make sence. to much of a mixture of everything. maybe add a story that he scavange the armor of his fallen opponents or something.
and the horns will look much cooler if curled like a ram.
i like the swords. kinda mix between meatcleaver and sword.
Hi man. Dont pay heed to Lemai and Broken cow. Pointless posts.
Anyway, can't really add to what's been said already. Cept I too am on an anatomy binge. And it honestly helps so much its untrue. I also loved your thumbnails. I'd like to see a re-design of this guy taking all crits into consideration with one of your other thumbnails as a starting point.
PS, Happy St Patricks day too mate!!! Have a guinness on me
it's not pointless. it needs to be heard. ohh and sorry, i didn't read comments, so i noticed marko's after i posted.
i can't say anything that has already been said. but something is wrong with you if you post something that isn't up to par with the rest of the art that is posted here, and call it "bad ass" then post close ups as if people are really going to be interested it in.
However, i will say that your sketches leading up to this are in the right direction. that's about all you got going on right now. you need practice. you could learn anatomy, and lighting, but that isn't going to do anything IMO. practing using those thigns you learn from them will. draw a ton, i mean A TON on anatomy drawings. pretty soon you'll master it. practice is the only way IMO.
lovely how someone who actually reacts to crit in a mature manner has to face such brainfarts like brokencow produced. you brokencow are good but you aint the best neither (better than me but that aint that hard nor does it really prove any point)... so what? no reason at all to make fun of someone whos not where you are and trying to become better ... at least he doesnt make a joke of himself by acting like the king of the hill.
You seem to be under the impression that cass83 is a blowhard. He's not.Originally Posted by brokencow
