SirGreenSock - thanks alot! Yeah you are right, I will try to push them! Im mostly using a mechanical pencil which makes it kind of hard sometimes, should probobly switch to pencils D:
Todays stuff, sorry about the bad scans... French tests make me a sad panda :
Was going to study proportions but that turned out even more boring that I though it would be =/ I did some arm studies instead but those a probobly boring to post So here are some non reffed ones afterwards
Daily 3 poses, meh =/
Hands, I seem to be extra bad at drawing them from a mirror for some reason, will practice more!
SP with pretty good likeness, gotta stop leaning over though
And some more imagination stuff
Anyone know any good refs for planes? and info about bargue drawings would be nice too

I use mechanical pencils most of the time, too. Just a matter of hatching and building up the layers.
Something else you might wanna try to do for value and contrast is use a darker lead, like waaay darker. Try using a 5-6B pencil, pencil crayon, charcoal or grease pencil to get the really solid rich blacks.
Really like where youre going with the imagination stuff, keep exploring compositions and design in there.
What do you mean by planes? As in airplanes or planes of the face and such?
SirGreenSock - thanks man! I will play around with using darker stuff, will probobly help
Thanks for the thread, all the links to actual barque drawings seem to be broken though
And oops, yeah I meant facial planes cant seem to find any good ones anywhere, the loomis ones are pretty good though...
This was all I got done today, JE SUIS LE STUDIE LE FRANCAISE OH NON!
Daily 3 poses
And I spent longer time on this SP than usual, quite happy with the likeness

Hi there ,
you have nice lines and feeling of form and your last selfportrait is very nice.
May be you should try to push the contrast of values further for example in the daily 3 poses the one that is rendered seems a little bit grey (lacks some contrast). You could try to use maybe 3 values and render with them. This is just what I am thinking.
The last selportrait has more value range and reads better .Keep drawing and posting
heartbeat - thanks I sort of tried that 3 value thing for one of the poses today, still not quite right though...
Today was one of those days where you just dont feel like doing any studies/having no idea what to study, so i spent the evening drawing a page from imagination instead
then did the daily stuff,
SP, used a pastel pencil to really get the darks in there, made me see just how light and lacking of contrast some of my other stuff is D:

daily 3 poses meh
Tried doing a longer SP again, didnt go too well, and a loomis head
Quicker SP with some quick reffed stuff zomgah
A cast study, or statue, or whatevah zomgah
And the best from the life drawing session zomgah zomgah

SirGreenSock - thanks! Yeah, glad its showing through atleast, got a new sketchbook with a bit granier paper too for getting darker values quicker. Rest of the session is up
Here is the rest of yesterdays life session, tried a more gestural aproach with faster rendering in these, suited me alot more that the constructional one me thinks
Today, no school
Attempts at drawing them from memory
And then one more page of studies
Daily 3 poses
And daily real quick SP with some horribly missplaced blind ones, battling it out with LASER GUNS
I also started some imagination stuff after about an hour of sqruibling and erasing too much trial and error, we will see when its finished.

Nice stuff, the life drawing session looks awesome! This page is brilliant!
Getting solid proportions and good value. In your drawing watch the way the form wraps around the body, the way the limbs fit into the torso, the way the pelvis twists to get depth in the drawing itself. In other words, try to look at not only the value itself, but the underlying shapes that form it in your drawing to create depth even without value.
SirGreenSock - thanks for the tips dude, will look into it
Daily 3 poses
And an SP, no idea where the hell I was going with the rendering though D:
Today, Have to study a lot this weekend, but its cool because I get a 4 day long weekend next week
Daily 3 poses
SP and hands... WTF BEARD!
Last edited by archipelago; May 14th, 2007 at 05:55 PM.
Love the figure work and the studies, I really like your line, maybe try out some different rendering styles thoguh?
Alcian - Thanks alot, been playing around alot with rendering, im sure it will settle in after a while
This was all that got done on saturday, studied for school so yah:
Still life with loomis lips
Daily 3 poses
SP with some hands
SP with real quick hand gestures bleh
And daily 3 poses
Daily 3 poses
SP with some forarms from memory
Last edited by archipelago; May 14th, 2007 at 05:56 PM.
wow.. i like it!..
you got some good stuff going on here..
The still life's head and the bougereau studies are exactly what I think Ive been talking about in terms of midtone and shadow. Building up the midtone brings in much more depth, compare the head of the bear to its body, it has far more depth because of midtones.
study study study...hows abouts you take some of what you've learned and do a complete full page large drawing to try and apply it more?
alot of hard work going on in here, looking great
wi_2 - thanks!
SirGreenSock - thanks man! Ive been thinking of doing a more finished piece, and you just convinced me to start one!
bradley - thanks
Whipped out an A3 paper (well its a bit wider than A3) and started drawing, here are some very sketchy prelim sketches, but I thought they might be interesting to see, Will post wips later most probobly
SP and loomis
And daily 3 poses
Last edited by archipelago; May 14th, 2007 at 05:57 PM.
rodrigo! - thanks man
Did some anatomy studies and this unfinished still life, screwed it up completely though so I couldnt continue =/
Heads from imagination, really suck at these
Forearms from mirror
Photo reffed stuff, the dude in the middle is me D:
And this is a WIP of the bigger picture im doing, not very happy with how its turning out but feel free to critique it... the stuff down the bottom is meant to be water btw

Really havent been drawing as much as I could have lately, I will try to kick it up a notch
Also, if any one from stockholm is reading this, do you know any good places for life drawing? especially during summer? I cant find any =/
Hands, the ones on the top are reffed from loomis, the rest are from life
And a real quick SP up close to the mirror, I will stop doing stupid stuff like this I promise D:
Daily 3 poses
Some atempts at doodling monsters, couldnt make any of them look evil
And heres the finished pic, A bit wider than an A3. As I said, not too happy with it at all but it was fun so yah feel free to crit it as much as you want so I can learn from my mistakes!

hey man nice sketches! seriously its really good to see someone hard at work at anatomy! i really like how you've improved your range of values in some of the drawings. Keep pushing those values, make your darks as DARK AS POSSIBLE. even try using some ballpoint pen or a softer/darker pencil. also try improving some of the line quality, maybe make more solid, less "hairy' lines. over all, good work though. keep sketching away.
Christ, you made all these improvements from page 1-3 in about 3 and a half months, fuck me thats quick lol! Seriously, great stuff dude, I should really learn from your hard work and get off my ass and get into gear. I've been drawing a loong time now, and I have nowhere near the anatomical understanding that you seem to have such a grasp of.
Hats off from me, keep it up!!!
P.s. cheers for commentin on my sb, appreciated!
Ryan DeMita - thanks yeah you are right, I'll work harder on my values and line quality!
Cocofuppa - thanks man! I try to draw whenever I have the chance really, no TV or computer, thats all there is too it. took a while to get into it and the first weeks where pretty much horrible lol, but once you break down that barrier you will be rewarded
And my anatomy understanding, haha! just a bunch of blobs stuck together, I dont know squat D:
Tried drawing stuff from imagination, as soon as I started getting somewhere it turned to shits and then I erased it, rinse and repeat several times (bad habit) so then I decided to do some quick gestures of a statue to figure stuff out, then I tried tackling the imagination stuff again, bad values though:
Daily 3 poses, probobly the last, want to focus on other stuff
SP + hands
And more imagination crap
I understand Bridgemans stylized forms alot more now so I did some studies
Singleline SP + heads from imagination LOL Y HALLO THAR UNCANNY VALLY!
And imagination stuff
Last edited by archipelago; May 14th, 2007 at 06:01 PM.
Full page imagination stuff is really coming along! Good work there!
You gots to learn to start finishing things though, you keep trapping yourself in the familiar. Stop rendering the faces to hell and do a full render of EVERYTHING else to gain perspective in where you need to work on. Tried it myself, too ashamed to post the results, got a long way to go.
Hey man, your studies are improving the work ten fold. The rendering is impressive, the lines especially. You're getting some good values in there. Continue with the SP's too, they're fun to look at if not more than studies. If I can offer a crit it'd be to try for a more defined range of values. Make the darks DARK. Pitch black. But don't overdo it. I tend to do that and it ends up being a huge smeared mess. Keep up the constant posts/drawing man, it's showing definite improvement!
SirGreenSock - thanks man! yeah definently, I worked abit more on one of the imagination pages, looks alot better now I think Ill try to do more finished stuff!
Zord - thanks alot Yeah Im trying to work on my values, not going to well though D:
Decided to work more on this one:
A cast drawing, took 3 hours and 40 minutes (probobly the longest Ive ever spent on anything from life!) I didnt finish the hair though because I didnt think it was nescesary, I guess I should have though, looks kind of stupid. I think I made the reflected light a bit bright though.
+ another single line SP
And a doodle lol

Great update, keep up the anatomy stuff! Good to see you applying it to your face, keep trying that with yours and other's faces. On that one though, feel around your eyesocket to match the shape, doesnt seem to match up in the pic.
Liking the imagination picture as well, head is way too big but youre getting there!
