awesome work man! so much work too, lol. it took me along time to scroll down this page! i dont have much to say because its clear youre working hard enough lol, so just keep doiing wat ur doing!
one of the sps that really stuck out was the ballpoint pen one- looked great.
Woo, someones keepin busy, youve really been tightening up. That ballpoint pen sp is kickass, so simple, but effective.
I like the girl acryl better than the self portraits, its less muddy and more fluid, again its the simplicity that works.
My main critique is content-oriented and is that your imagination sketches are all taking the same path recently, with mainly random heads and busts just kinda starin out into space, with one or two interesting design elements iterwoven somewhere, but theres not much concept, story or daring happening. I think youre getting caught up in routine, try looking for a new direction. The character designs you do every so often are good, do more of those and try something different. Hell if nothing else try some abstract painting to loosen up that noggin and refresh youself.
JoeEffect - thanks dude, as for your question, books actually have little to do with getting better at drawing, ive made that mistake several times, buying a book and thinking it will make me awesome at drawing... sure, there are books that will probobly help you out though, but dont rely on them too heavily, drawing from life/imagination and figuring stuff out for yourself is the way to go really... hogarths books are pretty sweet although I dont own any
Nigel - cheers man! alot can happen in a year and drawing has truly changed my life for the better, it will surely happen to you too if you let it! Alot of the figure drawings are from life yeah, some are reffed and some are from imagination though! figure drawing is very fun, very hard and very rewarding, you should definently try it out! you have to stick with it for a little while to get the hang of it though... if you want to find a place to go to just google around, or look in the papers or something like that, it shouldnt be too hard to find actually... most figure drawing places dont have an age limit either(and rightly so, its just nudity, nothing more )
Call0ps - thanks! that guy was inspired by the game "shadow of the colossus" actually!
Wake101 - thanks! yeah, I basically cant draw without music, well I can... I just prefer not too gets too tedious otherwise and it helps me relax... theres a list of music I like on my CA profile, but its fairly out of date, my favorite band is Animal Collective, right now im into Sigur Rós though!
rodrigo! - thanks! I could be drawing way way way more if I had the willpower ... maybe its just all in my head though?
SirGreenSock - thanks alot man! yep, I definently find it easier to paint from imagination than from life atm. Ive been feeling the same as you about the imagination sketches, they are definently getting stale, need to learn how to break out more and try new stuff, Ive been trying to do it lately and im searching for a new direction!
draw - thanks for the crit! ill try to look into it
A4 reffed study
This was a very fun exercise, put on Sigur Rós album "()" and drew an image for every song, when the song ended I moved onto the next one etc. The songs kind of drew themselves...
Bleh character sketch
heads from imagination
SP, reffed study and.... BLOOD
hands from le life
sketch from le imagination
late night random
Did a whole lot of master studies, hella fun, defiently should do more
hand from life in pen
non reffed anatomy, need to do more! gah!
acrylic... paint are fucking frustrating!!! I think im getting a little bit better though which is nice... but still poop lol

Wee hugenormous update!
First pic looks good valuewise, but your hatching is really messy, gotta smooth it out more, tighten up, get a lighter touch. Seems scatchy imo.
Overall though youre definitely on the right track. You gotta get a bit more patient with your renders, especially when developing your darks. You tend to go right in and press hella hard, which gets you these uglyass pencil strokes that just detract from everything. Build it up more methodically, no need to make mud.
The other thing is to look and experiment with the movements of the ribcage, shoulders, spine and pelvis, from all angles. Seems like most of your characters have the same torso with head and limps tacked on. Twist it round, tilt it, draw more of the back etc Even a slight twist of the pelvis makes the pose so much more interesting than a flyswatted pose. If youre having trouble figurin it out, try drawing the shoulders straight on or 3/4, thile the pelvis is viewed in profile, or vice versa and see where it takes you.
Im liking the value and form control on these quite a bit
also the diving spaceman character is quite appealing. I dig the smooth shape that envelops the shoulders / upper chest. Way cool
SirGreenSock - thanks a buttload for your crits and tips, very helpful as always!
Banshax - thanks alot dude!

When you update you dont fool around do ya? I get rsi from scrolling through that last post alone
Tnx btw for your tip on.. lines. Im afraid Im not quite getting it. Make sure the line points towards another line so you get an invisible gap between them.
You mean to say .. nope I really am not getting it, neither can I figure it from your work. I`ll let it ruminate for a while, perhaps it`ll click later on :]
Dreamworker - thanks dude!
Banshax - cheers! hah, yeah you saw the paintover in your SB, hope that cleared things up

Haven't been here in a while and I just wanted to say *?!@$%#?!@$!@ FINE PROGRESS!!!! Holy crap!
nice updates since I've last checked...that last sketch of the torso and the guy with the mohawk are nice....the way you draw hands is refreshing as well, always enegetic poses...really nice stuff to look at...anyways keep up the nice work
your hands are really strong. It's great to look at them and be inspired, you seem to be a natural at them.
archi, this page is stunning http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f1.../Archi-949.jpg
faces and figures are getting stronger and stronger
about the ftp hosting thing, use the concept art upload feature which has no limit.
also buy some quality paper( i bought bristol and its awesome) and do some finished drawings( still lifes and self portraits are good, and somewhere the lighting wont change).
long cat made me lol
ps, love the avatar! so sexeh!
Hey man, great progress in this thread.
Will be checking in more often!
Very good update, I like this studies!
Keep sharing, ciao
Call0ps - cheers man!
TroyWilkerson - haha! thanks dude!
Gspot - thank you!
Jonny Dark - cheers! Im glad I could inspire you, I cant say Im natural with them though, its all just practicing, constantly drawing and looking at hands... look at the hands I was drawing a year ago and you will see how unnatural I am
blanquish - thanks man! yeah, I may aswell start using the concept art uploader (trying it out in this post), the thing I dont like is that you cant comment on each individual image... hmmm... meh
Ive heard that bristol is good, what kind of paper is it? smooth? If i can find it I might buy some, although I just spent a bunch of money on new sketchbooks! cheers! oh and about the avatar.... ITS A TRAP!
Tigermilk - thanks man!
Dreamworker - thanks as always!
So heres some stuff, drawing feels really refreshing at the moment, feels as if ive finally gotten over a bump that Ive been trying to climb over for ages... still need to draw more though =/
Mostly imagination sketches, but theres some SPs hands and masterstudies in there aswell!
Very interesting glad I dropped by <> strong sb
WhiteC - Thanks man! haha, my anatomy is faaaaar from flawless but thanks anyway, remember that the reason you do studies is to learn how to draw them from imagination, not just to copy them as accurately as possible!
Solon - cheers!
Fishspawn - Im very glad I could inspire you, cant think of anything better artwise than to inspire someone!
Mentler - cheers man! glad you dropped by too
Right so the CA imageuploader is being a bitch and I cant get it to load right now so heres a photobucket update... Ill probobly convert all the other posts to CA instead of photobucket soon too... that might take a while though lol...

Character, wasnt going to be one from the start so thats why the head didnt fit in lol, schmeh
more bouguereau studies!
heads from imagination

And from imagination, inspired abit from the previous page but urgh...

That face looks great, so does "anatomy from imagination". Your linework is textbook material for me. Love your monumental style. yeah, a very nice SB indeed.
edit- no updates yet?
btw, you seem to use a retty soft pencil, 3b or 4b? Im using very soft color pencils but they wont produce such awsome dark tones.
Last edited by Banshax; March 10th, 2007 at 02:22 PM.
cool updates as usual, do you still use mechanical pencils ?
Btw, any particular spot you start with when you start a figure from imagination ? I tend to end up with too much construction lines when i do it but your stuff is very clean.. do you start directly with contours and just shade in or you draw some helpers to help you with the weight , etc. Or maybe you dont need any constructions after all those studies everything just flows on the paper.
Anyway, enough lickin, awesome progress since page 1, wish you the best.
Call0ps - Cheers man!
Banshax - thanks alot dude, yeah I use a 2b mechanical pencil most of the time, right now its on pretty rough paper, although I tend to prefer smooth... I dont think it really matters all too much, just try to build up the darks, placing them next to whites is also a nice trick to make them seem darker!
WhiteC - Yeah I use a mechanical pencil, I doubt it matters much though, I just prefer not to have to sharpen so much, the thing keeps on screwing up though and jamming
About the figures, usualy I just lay out some quick gesture lines (very quick, very light) and then just draw straight off pretty much. Itll probobly be a completely different process in a couple of months though, I tend to do things differently when I learn more about what the hell Im doing haha!
Dreamworker - thanks man! Im not that happy with the rendering on that one actually, I got too lazy... I need to learn patience!
Rodrigo - very inspiring comment man, thanks a bunch
Ummm, so Is there a reason why the CA uploader dosnt exist at all now? like the "attach Files" button is gone lol.... ???
anyway, heres a life drawing update in chronological order, I usually go once a week, just havent posted for a while D:, the times are written on the pages:
Last edited by archipelago; June 24th, 2007 at 06:28 PM.
awsome updates as always man, looking at the amount of stuff you post in such short times really kicks me in the butt every time I look at your sb. Keep up the awsomness
