I am just working on understanding what I am doing now so I am experimenting with all kinds of things. The first image is inspired by the Hudson river painter Frederich Edwin Church. The second is just a quick concept for a giant robot.

I edited your post so the images would show up. You have to put the URL of the image itself inside the [IMG] tags, not the whole page address.
I like the first one quite a bit.
I know the second is just a quick sketch, but I find the combination of textured, impasto brushstrokes in the background with smooth, soft brushes for the figure and shadow really distracting.

On the first - not sure if you did this on purpose... but the composition: your subject is smack in the middle - both horizontally (bridge) and vertically (robot)...
The bridge especially, flattens everything out.
Maybe if it was leading our eye in from the FG and going off into the distance...
The background on the first one looks really nice. The robot looks rather rough there and like Rascar mentioned, the composition isn't very appealing.
The second one is really rough right now, put that aside, the overal coloring is too light and the contrast is light too, and result in lack of depth.
