well i exceeded the diskspace from my website so i was checking out traffic and diskusage. i saw that some peeps from another forum are linking some of the images from pringle, a couple of others and one by me.
i just participate on this forum and am doing my own site and am not that much of an insider in web etiquette or anything but isnt this called hotlinking and a rather rude way of using somebody elses bandwitdh?
or do people see this as a 'compliment' of sorts?
im thinking of contacting the moderator of the board in question.
any thoughts / insights would be appreciated.
edit: forgot the link
Generally, the excuse that you will get when you ask is that you should feel flattered because they're linking your pictures. They call it free advertisement. What they're actually doing is stealing your bandwidth, time and (maybe) money. Don't fall for that trick - only allow hotlinking when you've given permission. If you have an account on that board, it's better to ask the people first, and then if they don't stop hogging your bandwidth, contact the moderators/admins of the board.
thanks for the comments. im not a member there, ive never been there before today. its not advertizement cause they also dont put any names or credits with the images.
im writing the moderator now.
over rite your image with a big HEY STOP STEALING MY BANDWIDTH UU-TEA-F!
You may have some "disallow hotlinking" option at your host...if you're lucky it may even allow you to set which sites should be allowed to hotlink a certain image and which should not. Check if you have access to some sort of control panel...
As for the "is it ok hotlink" question...it depends. If they're only using a couple of images I think it's okay - as long as it doesn't eat all your bandwidth. Would you rather have them put the files on their own server without asking for permission first?
My favorite form of revenge is to replace the images in question with goatse images.

Out of curiousity how do you do that? Check to see who's hotlinked an image from your web site, that is.Originally Posted by tensai

just wanted to let people know that i wrote the administrator of the particular forum and he emailed me back apologizing for the inconvenience etc. the pics are still there but with the names of the respective sites that they came from.
like pontemonti said they now seem to have been 'imageshacked'. it saves bandwidth but now the image is on another server. dont know if thats for better or for worse. the admin was quite responsive but the image is of course still not theirs to reproduce. it is a 'post inspiring art' thread though, so its not such a big deal.
Eric Lofgren: my host has a control panel (using something called plesk) where i can see all the traffic. which urls are hit how many times, and at percentages of total hits, how many traffic that generates, at what time a day is traffic highest (11 am...) and where the traffic comes from (countries and servers). so the traffic generated by a url that is not on your own site is because somebody hotlinked. or so it seems. it was the second time for me to look at all this information. but anyway i clicked on the url and there was the artwork..
i have a flexible host though. i can advise them to anybody. theyre cheap and i exceeded traffic twice now without them taking me down. they asked me what i wanted to do and i said keep the site up and running and ill pay for the extra traffic. they didnt charge me a thing though.
