I did this one for CGTalk's Expose3. It was done mostly in Painter over the last month late night after work and at week-ends. I also used Photoshop for some color tweaking. The idea came to me after a walk in the park and watching a tree that looked like a hand ready to grab something...My intention was to go for fairy tale kind of image at first glance, but hinting a some cruelty after close inspection. I hope you like it.
I originally agreed with Nixon, but the more I looked at it, the more I felt that the piece comes off much better with the action subdued and subtle. The eye slowly tracks down to the girl, noticing the menacing branches as we go. The tension is very palpable. My only crit would be regarding the irregularity and excessive detail in the distant, shaded windows (although upon second look, I don't think the rocks in the foreground are working well, either).
That looks awesome! The detail in the environment is amazing. The only thing I could suggest is maybe some more really thin branches on the tree like this... it looks cool as it is, just seems to lack the level of detail that is in the bushes around it.
If the castle is that hazy, the windows would not appear so detailed. They would just be darker rectangles.
cool idea, I like the image.
