I went to the Boston Museum School. Figure drawing-model in room, no instructor. Portrait painting-model in room no instruction, no instructor.
No Bargues, no casts, no nothin'. We did learn however to put sand in our paint for texture.
Gotta get that Bargue book! Something to do when my model declines to appear.
You should feel terrible, terrible I tell you.....lol, that's really nice. Is the object of the exercise duplication or to understand how he thinks or both? Cause I think you're on the right track. Looks good to me. I agree with Icon, "I can't wait to see how your own personal works will benefit from all these studies!!" Keep them coming, and thanks for answering all my questions.

dakoscwash--you don't know how happy your question makes me! In Fechin's pic, it kind of looked like he had done the thing you are suggesting, but I wasn't sure and I didn't know how to replicate it.
I just drew really thin lines close together, using a really light touch. But I'm so glad to know that I pulled it off!

seth1--I think I'm doing a couple more, then moving on to cast drawing, then maybe after that I will start painting.

Sharon Knettell--so nice of you to stop by and leave a comment. Despite your art school experience, you seem to have done pretty well for yourself! I love your work.
Bojee--I think the exercise has two main purposes. The first is to train my eye to see and replicate things accurately. The second is the internalize the unique methods of the artists and try to pick up things to use in my own work.
I'm working on a Dean Cornwell copy now. It's a little over half way done, I think.
Cool ! Great bold l ines on this one, adds a lot to the form.
What's with the clipped corner on the original? Did Cornwell doodle something while on the phone and rip it out later?

Perhaps it’s about time I pitched in here. Emily has been with me for three days a week since February. Today she finished her fifth drawing. Her patience is extraordinary and it’s really paying off. Her next work will be another flat copy drawing, but one of her choosing and using a style and technique of her own. I am encouraging her to have it be a bit more interpretive too.
She will soon be ready to go downstairs and start on 3D cast drawing.
Yesterday was Emily’s birthday. I climbed up on the studio balcony and took a few photos. Stacy brought cupcakes. I would never think of that…..
Stacy is a lefty, so I have them set up – easels face-to-face.
We spend a lot of time plugged in to our various listening devices. It’s natural for them, highly unnatural for me. My little music player, my cell phone…terrify me.
Stacy, Emily and my wife Sandra looking at some visuals. It’s not all work all the time. Occasionally the women take a five minute break.
I sometimes nap – once, maybe twice a day.
Stacy has been with us since May 2. She is showing as much patience as Emily and I look forward to seeing her post her first Bargue copy here – when she eventually finishes it.
I’m told that Stacy and Emily are going with Tom (you know who you are) to the zoo tomorrow to sketch animals. I get to stay home and putter about the studio.

the drawings are all amazing, i really admire the way you don't just copy the drawing but the texture too. i think admire is prolly an understatement. it's crazy insane just to see your progress.

Craig D--That is something Bill designed himself. It is to bring the painting closer to the painter when sitting in a chair. You can see from the pictures that there is a horizontal bar across the base of the easel, which can make it hard to get your chair really close to what you're working on. This is why I often move my drawing down and rest it on the arms of the chair.

Ok, here's the finished Cornwell drawing. For some reason, these printouts tend to show up a little darker in the photographs compared to my drawings. I think they're a little closer in real life. Maybe it's the ink on paper vs. charcoal on paper?
WOW, your making some serious progress, i admire you for taking the time to do those studies, and i'm sure you're learning tons.
Do you draw from imagination these days or just atelier work? what are your long term goals? Fine arts? illustration?
Anyways, just keep the fantastic progress, and i'll keep checking your progress even if i don't post too often.
