man, those artifact guys are just too cool! Give us a tip or two on what you're thinking when you make the design..damn I deffinately can't come up with costumes like that!
N & B
good updates, bro.
i agree with sarah re: eyes (mainly in the profile version).
re: logos - they're nice with "black sky" most likely being the best one to reduce down and print efficiently as a b/w logo - i see the wild fire workin as well, but the type lock up is a bit funky. The odd thing with "black sky" is that the image should be reversed out to be a....black sky....ya know? but what do i know....
Oregano: Thx for dropping by brother!
Silverslash: Don't listen to Mike, I paid him to be my PR guy Thx for dropping by!
Sapphire: thx for the heads up on the faces. I totally see where you're coming from with the forehead, the top of his head comes off a bit flat, I'll have to work on that more.
Chaosphere: Thx for dropping by and the compliments
Fellah: Thx for dropping by and for the compliment
One2Hit: When I'm thinking about a design I try to think of functionality and stylistically fitting it into the characters universe. It all depends on what the characters schtik is. For those characters, Phuzion and I decided to work in a pseudo Final Fantasy style.
redehlert: you shut your filthy mouth Dave! thx again for telling me what's up. The blacksky logo is a bug intented for larger images and stickers it's not meant for print or to be shrunk down. The background is actually the text for blacksky distorted. As I wasn't originally a member of Blacksky the design was based on the wishes of the writer.
For about 5 years I've been working on finding a happy medium between American and Asian illustration. The real trick has been making minor exaggerations in anatomy look right on more antomically correct figures. As of late my influences have been Travis Charest, Josh Middleton, Rob Haynes, and James Jean of American style and Katsuya Terada, Range Murata, and Hyung Tae Kim of the Asian market. As I go through development stages I've been focussing on individual parts of the anatomy and making sure I have a better understanding of the basics and then building on them. All I can say is that I'll keep working on it and I ask for everyones help telling me if it looks retarded or "googly eyed".
Aside from that, no real art updates tonight, just got off gate sentry watch so I'm going to grab a bite and head to bed in a little bit. In the mean time here's some work that I did last year. A logo for our stand alone card game Poo, and a monkey that I colored in 10 minutes to get a general idea of a what test drawing Brett B Bean did would look like in color. Oh yeah, and a page out of a sketch book from 1997 when I decided to leave art school. Man was I a dumb ass:/ More new art to follow tomorrow.
weez feelthieee....weez duurrrdieee...weez likes id.
nice update bro - isn't it fun to see how much improvement is made over the years? constant satisfaction....forward momentum bro. see ya saturday night.
can't write sentences clearly...must go to bed.
You have got some great sketch work....freakin sick man...
Ill try to watch you.
- "There is no Fate but what we make for ourselves."
Man, you've been pumping out some good stuff, Mike. I saw this news story this morning and was wondering if you'd seen it.
By the way, when are you deploying? I know you said it was coming up...
Again, great stuff, especially the ones from May 4. I occasionally scan the Washington Group thread in memory of my time on Whidbey and am really missing not being able to participate. It sounds like you guys are having a blast.
nice work man. i really like your concepts. they look very professional comic booky
Hey yeah, speaking of that Thunder Dome...
Nah, you're pulling out some very cool shit here man. I'm diggin' those arm studies. I especially love the consentration on lines and contours, rather than value, keep it up
Maybe we can battle again in the next TD, or come up with a battle of our own, eh? Peeeeace!
Redehlert: Dave, good showing on Saturday. It was good to see you and it sucks that I wont be seeing you again until December. You should post up your TDome entry from our mini dome in here seeing that no one else will have seen the entries from the site unless they were Seattle crew. Either way, take care of yourself man and keep drawing!
Satellite1984: Thanks for dropping by. I'll try not to dissapoint you. I will warn you though, there will be a lull starting in June as I'm deploying to Japan and wont be back stateside until December.
Dogfood: Thanks again for dropping in and for dropping me a line. You compliments are appreciate, but don't hesitate to rip me a new one as well!
Stewart One: Thanks for dropping by! Love your thread too, you've got some great stuff going on over there. Feel free to visit whenever you can.
Phuzion: Wellllll now that we both have a little bit of a breather, we should do a little personal T Dome for fun in our sketch book threads. I'm in the process of finishing some design work and doing some cover art but I think it'd be good to do a TDome before I leave and then do one while I'm deployed, and then when I return. That way we can chart my progress. Thanks for dropping that piece in my thread as I requested. See you on AIM bro.
Well here's a quick warm up page and my drizzeldome piece from this Saturdays sketch group. I was facing off against Redehlert with the subject of "Evil alien warrior with cybernetic augmentation and a weapon that is incredibly disproportionate".
here was what i created vs. mike.
never did get around to the huge ass weapon, but it was still fun to do!

awesome work.... all three of you
STAR WARS TOMMORROW!!!!!
nice new avatar ya got there....
star wars - will be at pacific place for the midnight showing. you're not alone, fellow nerd.
being that my sketchbook is kind of a gathering place for my friends. I figured I'd let you all know that there's a concept art position open at WotC for Magic. If you want the info check out the job postings on their website at www.wizards.com If you want the down low on what it's like working for WotC as a full timer, just ask, I'd be happy to share my 3 years of experience working there. Dave (Redehlert) you can always ask your boss I will say that it USED to be a really great place to work at. From what I understand it's not like it was but then again, it may have changed for the better after Hasbro let them get their crap together.
That Drizzledome weapon is hilarious! You owe me a match next time, buddy.
Too bad that concept art position requires 3 years of experience. Would they ever hire a lil' school kid like me, still learning?
psshhhh I didn't have the pre-requisite experience when I got hired there. It's all about the presentation of your work. If your portfolio is professional looking and that you're capable of doing the job, they're willing to hire you. Apply for the job and show that you want it, the worst that can happen is that they can say no. Companies like WotC like to see that you want the job, and are willing to work for it. Submitting one portfolio and expecting a call back 3 months down the road is unrealistic. You have to update your portfolio with them constantly and most of all, be persistant.
What you should be working for here is to at least network and get your name on the table. I never would've gotten my first freelance job if I hadn't interviewed with WotC. The VP of the miniatures game design department liked my work and passed my name off to the President of Pinnacle Entertainment. He liked my work as well and gave me some work for their superhero RPG. The game tanked and I never got paid, but at least I can say that I was published. I subsequently was hired at corporate a year later working for the tech group.
Great stuff Mike, I just applied for the hell of it, even though I know I won't get it but like you said right, it's all about getting your name out there. You should definately give it try Sarah.
Nice Dave on that concept, are you going to post yours Mike?
Man sucks your going to be leaving pretty soon...ahhhhhh, but hey at least you have what... under a year til your out of the military...
hey sok, mike posted his already, it's the crazy one arm cannon creature. and thanks, but it's all about the concept so i failed.
as for applying, sok, bang on! it's all about intent - if it is a goal, you will work toward it, your intent draws you closer to achieving that goal. good luck!
LOL....yeah that's what i get for not reading lol....yeah nice going for the win Mike!
been sick due to smallpox vaccines, oral surgery, alergic reactions and other retardedness' over the past week and a half so I haven't picked up the pencil much. Here's a doodle out of my sketchbook from this weekend with the Seattle crew. I don't feel like scanning all my little thumbnails of guns and stuff so this'll have to suffice for now. Messed around for 30 min in painter with the oil pastel brush. I'm still trying to learn control with the brushes and gradually work into real color work. I'm going to be working with a more monochromatic feel to my color stuff once I get serious about it. In the mean time it'll just be doodles like this and gearing up for pencilling a graphic novel.
your "prostate powered" drawing's looking good, man.
i'm also gearing up for drawing a graphic novel for someone!
we're going to have to trade experiences across the pacific.
-ps - doesn't look like much of a duck anymore.
Hey dog. . . . did you see the size of that chicken?!
just thought I'd let everyone know, NO UPDATES FOR THE NEXT 6 MONTHS. I'll be in Japan on deployment but I'll also be drawing my ass off in my free time. I could update while I'm there but I'd rather just have a large dump in December to finish off the year and not have to worry about getting to a computer every week.
Best of luck in Japan. We'll miss you - looking forward to seeing what you come up with the next 6 months!
Ahhh 6 months of no updates, I'm not sure if i can hold out that long, hmm I'll have to get my fix somewhere else until then. Good luck buddy and may the schwartz be with you!
Have safe journey, man. Cant wait to see your LARGE DUMP (heh heh)
alright.. I've been gone for a little over 2 1/2 months now. I've only got about 9 pages worth of material that I'll be putting into this sb. My free time that I have doesn't include as much drawing as I'd like but I'm managing to squeeze it in. Being that I'm unable to post my work (update my site), if anyone has any special requests (things they'd like to see me draw more of) while I'm over here, I'm all ears. There will be a visual update in about a month and a half.
yeah, draw us some newdie pokemon. LOL!
get back here already and show us some art!
Well, I'm back from japan. Not too much to show. My scanner was broken in transit so I had to use a friends just to get these together. I forget to put some of the work from my moleskin onto the memory stick but I can grab them later.
Welcome back from Japan! Sorry to hear about your scanner. That bites.
Your lines are awesomely clean, as always. Really enjoying the figure studies and looking forward to more.
Helll yea Mike. Damn good to see your back, I tried hittin you up the other day, but to no avail. I can't wait to see your moleskine sketches. I'm lovin that Mugen sketch too. Keep 'em comin man!!!
awesome works,, i just discovered your thread today...will be back for more.
