MrBobMarley: Thanks man
rblitz7: Hell yes I want to be a concept artist. I've been busting my ass trying to become worthy enough to have the potential to become a concept artist, and I will be trying for full time employment at the end of this year.
crazy3dman: life, hence the title "Life drawing". It was at Saturdays life drawing session at Art Not in downtown Seattle.
Taj: Thanks for the compliment, and thanks for dropping in
fooxoo: The sketches are about the size that you're viewing them at if you have a 19" monitor. They were done in a standard 8 1/2x 11" sketchbook. Thanks for the compliments, I appreciate it. That kind of stuff gives me hope that I can get work in the industry by the end of the year.
GOOOO SEAHAWKS!!! We're going to the Superbowl, for the first time in Seahawks history. I'm so damn excited you folks have no idea.
anyhow, here's the final line art for the front and rear 3/4 w/helmet added for the combat armor.

Oh man I love this. you might not think much that you put that hand with the fingers showing in the 3/4 back view but i love it. Fantastic work, can't wait to see you by the end of this year!
looks like i missed an awesome model yesterday for figure drawing - superb job!!
Damn that armor really turned out great. And the life drawings kick ass big time
looks great man. great design, neat and tidy, too. only suggestion: you can trim the ankles a little narrower in the back view. I might be reading the front views wrong, but they don't seem to be as thick.
I'm gonna have to root against you WA guys in the superbowl, I grew up in PA and I spent far too many Sundays drinking Yuengling Premium with my buddies to not get psyched about the Steelers.
now it's truly an east meets west, brendan.
hawks are going to put the steelers to bed, bro. we'll even turn your sheets down, fluff your pillow and put a mint on top for good measure.
so happy it's the steelers we're going against....old school teams rock.
I'm at work so I'll drop some responses now so I don't have to type as much when I update tonight.
crazy3dman: I appologize if my scathing wit (aka sarcasm) came off a little harsh. I didn't mean it to sound so rude, I should've chucked in a little to help.. regardless, no big deal man just had to give you crap on principle Thanks for looking, commenting, and hanging out in here.
Taj: Thanks a ton man. To be honest I was getting frustrated drawing the hand in another pose so I erased it and went to one of my cheater hands. I think I draw maybe 10 different poses for hands. I've been working on fixing that though. I'm making some major break throughs artistically right now and can't wait to see what I'm able to accomplish at the end of the year either. If I continue to improve at my current pace I might be able to get a damn job come December.
Red: Dave, she was an awesome model in the fact that she was so damn skinny that there was tons of cast shadows that I could have fun with. Working with this new shading technique helped an ass ton and made a major difference in my work at life drawing. Go Hawks is right brotha' Super Bowl Extra Large here we come!! STEELERS ARE GOIN' DOWN!!! Hey, you should see if you can make a little Seahawks logo emoticon for the WA thread.
Darktwin: Thanks allot for dropping a line, it's awesome to hear that I'm doing something right from time to time.
thirdeye: Thanks again man, I'm really happy that I'm finally making progress. At least I see, and feel the difference when I'm working now, and that's what matters.
bdfoster: Thank you very much for the kind words good sir. After the last 2 life drawing sessions and seeing its impact on my work I'll be making sure that I make it to all the sessions that I can. It's incredible seeing how much the foundation stuff that I've been working on has helped over the last year. Please keep dropping in if you can, it'd be cool to get your feedback as my portfolio begins to take shape.
GunTrouver: Thanks for the compliment I'll warn you though, I suck pretty hard with color so it will more than likely be nothing impressive.. I'll be keeping it pretty simple and ripping off other artists color techniques just to get the job done.
bwkeough: Brandon, will do! I see what you're talking about with the ankles.. it's real subtle but worthy of tweaking. I've been waiting for RebeccaK to drop a line to help me with these damn feet, hence the reason why they look unfinished. Your observation is greatly appreciated though my friend. W/regards to the superbowl.. I'll be drinking straight vodka throughout the game, I suggest to do the same because the Steelers are goin' down. Nuff said
Red: lol that's dope Dave, well put.
WIP. Attempting Salarymans coloring style.. god I suck at color. I haven't really found my own coloring style yet so there's going to be a period of experimentation before I'm able to find something I'm comfortable with.

THE OTHER BROTHERS
Love your lifedrawings, man! Damn.. especially this one..
Your characters are damn solid. Love your work..
Don't think I've been in here before, so I figure an asspat would be a good start... heh..
Nice thread, man! My advice is to loosen up! These things are too tight! Keep 'em comin'.
Red: thx brotha.. this coloring/digital paint thing is very much trial by fire for me. I do so little color work that it's either going to go well, or end in failure. All I can do is try my best on this one, study time is over.
mentler: Thanks for dropping in good sir. When you say "Interesting" is that interresting as in "Not my cup of tea, but I haven't made up my mind" or as in; a state of curiosity or concern about or attention to something? Regardless, I'm all ears as to any suggestions you might have for me.
hurricane: thanks for the props Bjorn and sorry I didn't jump online in time yesterday. I took a nap after work to help with recovery from the NFC Playoff game
dCepT: Thank you for dropping in and for the ass pat Just don't forget to switch up the ass pats with scathing critics from time to time.. gotta keep me honest and on my toes!
ZebzFree: Thanks for dropping in man and the props I can't loosen up, I've tried. It's the OCD in me that wont let a dirty drawing out. Although, with enough vodka that can be fixed, you would have to grab it before I threw it out though
seth: I'm working on the coloring, it's going to take a few months before I start figuring this stuff out.. I'm way out of my element in the color arena.
bwkeough: He'll get dirty once I get all the general stuff mapped out. Is the color scheme for the suit working alright?
the color scheme works well. it has a good military-industrial feel to it.
Thats a great job on the colors, wish there was more contrast with the face vs the armor though (machine and man type thing). But you are trying to get into your own style so it doesnt really matter. Good stuff!
BW: Ah good, that means I achieved what I wanted, thanks for the feedback Brandon.
Taj: Thanks for the feedback Taj. I tried messing with the face a bit last night but couldn't get it to work quite right with the background I dropped in for fun.. it didn't look too hot so I continued to dick with it until I got too tired to work on it anymore.
I'll post a few pages tonight to make up for not posting yesterday. My wife and I do Tuesday night dinner and a movie night where we go buy a new DVD and cook dinner so that cut into about 3 hours of time where I'd be working. I forgot to thaw the damn chicken so it took a little longer than it should've to cook dinner. In case anyones curious it was chicken fettucine with pesto. I'll be busting my arse after I get home from work in about 30 minutes and the wife has class tonight so there will be no interruptions.. expect a few images.
my life is now complete with the knowledge of your chicken fettucine w/ pesto.
post post post.....
great great stuff man. I really dig your style. But please bring back that creativity that's flooding your first page! That shit is off the wall. and Tool's great music to draw that kinda shit too. haha
Red: Dave, starting tomorrow I'm going to be putting my personal recipes in my sketch book as added flavor.. literally First recipe will be 'Hawaiian Breakfast' for the Spam lover in everyone.
Orozc0: Thanks for the compliment. With regards to the first page, allot of that stuff was roughs and character/creature designs warm ups. The finished sketches I can't show due to NDA. All the stuff you're seeing now is after a year of refinement with foundation skills. I've still been creative but focussing on foundation skills will help make all my designs look allot more solid. I'm currently working on my portfolio so I can find work at the end of the year when I seperate from the Navy. Sorry that my latest work is dissapointing. All that I can say is that all the work I've put in over the last 6 months will show allot more when I have time to do things like COW, Chow, and IDW once my portfolio is complete. BTW, Tool has a new album coming out in April.
After 6 different poses and design revisions tonight this is the sketch that I'm going to take to final. You wouldn't be able to translate the other sketches otherwise I would've scanned them. I visualize allot of the shapes when I'm working before I lay down the lines and go through tons of paper roughing out random shapes and lines, then when I've found something that I think works I push forwards with it.
and working with some quick layout to see how things might look with a bit of color
Last edited by Undertow; January 26th, 2006 at 03:01 AM.
that layout looks good. but I think the abdominal armor goes too dark on the shadow side. the angle there isn't as extreme as the side of the leg, so I would us an in-between value. maybe change it back to the lighter grey then hit it with another multiply layer to create a semi-shadow area?
also: what would the color look like for the helmet? it looks like the view is just a horizontal flip of the opposite side, should be quick work to color that one as well.
Nice demon creation! Keep on that one, mate...it's got madness in it!
I would love to see it in a few different poses - you know, really get to know this guy (crouching, leaping at you, away from you and so forth). I REALLY like it.
