another good piece of advice :
Check for the vertical and horizontal when drawing axes of the limbs, they are VERY VERY VERY RARELY VERTICAL OF HORIZONTAL !! not to say never !
in your last study, you move a little your leg, the negative space between arm and leg is improved, proportion also (legs little short) ,and you're done !
A tip, even if it sounds hard, try no to go in detail or shading if drawing isnt perfect. Its the hard way to learn... You can asolutely overgo this last advice, it s a hard one, i dont even follow it, i just know i should have !

The Raphael studies look great, heads seem funny though. On the left figure, I think the left side of his neck is too long, or the head is just joining at the wrong position... just my thoughts, hehe.
Really liked the second pic! I've been thinking about doing something exactly like that except from the jaw looking down the leg! I like it, good work on it!
Your drawing from imagination seems to be a weak point of yours, as it is one of mine! Keep working on those and soon enough you won't be able to tell the difference between your life drawings and your originals!

Great stuff, and thanks for stopping by my thread every now and then This thread shows you are very determined, there is alot of learning going on. Have you ever tried developing a drawing from a gesture to a more finished drawing? Remember, the question a gesture drawing should answer is not 'what does the subject look like?', it should answer 'what is the subject doing?' The process is comparable to starting out at the bottom of a pool and then coming up to the surface. I hope that helped and wasn't too confusing, good look
the Hair is indeed very nice drawn but the texture on the faces let them look like stone. (which could be of course interesting some times )
Maybe ,if you want, you could achieve a "skinnier" result by aplying softer shadows to the pictures. right now a grey layer seem to stop suddenly in front of a white one....but there shouldn? t be such boarders....(there also dont exist in the real life....everything is soft... )

Ice man oooo the eyes on both of these portraits seem a little far apart
I'm with Mr. Mentler on the eye thing, and alos the neck of the woman makes it look like shes got a hollow trunk-like neck cus of the ultra dark space between the sterno-cleido-mastoid muscles (woo, put my Bridgman to use!)
Also, the right right cheek of the man seems to be wider than his left, makes the beard growth look weird, or it could just be where you put his hair grow from...

Nice stuff here Icey. Pretty good portraits - nice try at capturing the skin texture with the wrinkles and all - but it could need some work. Also - the EYES are a bit messed and not just on this one. I looked through your sketchbook and noticed that this happens a lot - try working on that (maybe draw some guidelines? ). Full figure studies on the other hand are very good.

Looking through your thread is inspiring. One crit I could make in my humble opinion is that it looks as though a lot of the skteches are from references and a lot of figure work (which you are very good with).
Perhaps try drawing other life stuff outdoors - trees, buildings landscapes and, people in their environment. I really need to do all of this myself as well. Also (very occasionally) you take to a high degree of finish a work which proportions are not correct. I recommend the Bargue thread (old middle class thread) for helping with proportions. The method has definitely helped me.
Anyway keep up the fantastic work you already are killing and I know you'll only progress. Hell your better than me but I gotta make comments cause you where kind enough to comment on my sketches.
stop it would ya! My god you draw ALOT!! Are you in a figure drawing class or something? Your anatomy/figures are awesome. No offense but there's a big difference between your old drawings and the new. The new being very right on and shaded better. Keep it up.
Your determination alone is inspiring. I have the same Anatomy for the Artist book you do, but I don't pay nearly enough attention like you. Maybe now I'll do the book start to finish.
Fine update here Icey ~~~ Master Bouguereau certainly attained a very high skill level ~~~ much of what is does is very subtle so you have to look hard for the value structure and plane breaks ~~~ it helps here to squint and throw things out of focus in order to simplify the shapes.

cool! i love seeing other's studies. i think it'd help you a lot if you could just hold a model of a head or something. i know it helped me think more 3 dimensionally. your studies look a LITTLE flat, that's why i'm mentioning this. anyways, try to pick one of those things up. study it for a few minutes, then try drawing it. keep up the good work
I agree with Odds. Most of your drwings suffers from the lack of construction. Also, your shading needs some work. I have mentioned thes before, but... When adding value, SHAPE the form; follow the planes. Studiyng construction will help on that.
You are doing good, but don't get discouraged to go back to the basics for a while. Even though it won't look as awesome and stunning as a fully rendered study, it wil help you alot in the long run.
Nice studies of the figure, I don't really have any critics since other people have pointed out what you should improve on. Just work on your anatomy more and draw from imagination whenever you feel like it. Good stuff.
nice, Ice (hey that ryhmes!)... there's still an obvious line when you do stuff from reference and from your head... but then again, most of us have that... I really dig those horses... those are a pain to draw too...
looking good. some suggestions:
try to do some drawings without any shading at all,just lines-vary the thickness to imply weight.(look into prom's bigass tutorial if you haven't already).
continue those block figures like on page1.
do some pages of stickfigure poses.
don't only look at old master's anatomy drawings but current ones too,compare.
see if you can exaggerate muscles like comic book characters do.
ignore all of my pointers since i don't even follow them myself
keep it up.
better than your previous stuff,very nice. only the last one doesn't come close in terms of quality. now try really without ANY shading.

Glad to see you posting ~~~~ figure work is very solid :::: make the shading always work with the form :::: it is all about the form <><><> a great deal of the shading that people put in there drawings goes against the structure and unity of the form <><><> I know you know these things but I see you slip once in a while.
I dig your studies. Especially the last ones are looking extremely well. You have an amazing sense for gestures and anatomy and just by looking at your stuff I'm learning a great deal! Take care master!
