Final Entry for Round #227
Just 2 of us eh?
OK Dayle here's my critique for you...
Your concept is very ambitious! I love the scale of the whole thing. Here is this giant machine used to keep the alien alive, healthy, and also contained. Because of its size I assume it has all of these multiple functions, maybe even more. I wouldn't mind a few text fly-outs describing what each part does, and I think that leads into my main crit which is that we see all these components but the design doesn't make it clear what the function is. I admit, I was tempted to add a few bits of text around my design, but since it is pretty my one unit I didn't think it necessary. The only other thing I will say is that I like the mood of the scene in your piece, looks dark and creepy. I could see that fitting into the Alien universe. Moving forward I would just say spend more time refining the design, especially for IDW really go for clean lines and tight perspective. Other than that, good job
Hey Artiphats... Aliens vs Predator \o/
Thanks for the crit, very useful feedback. I think your design worked well, it reads as a design that would fit in the predators world. The triangular repeating patterns are a good element. The only thing to point out is to take care with the lightsource and direction of the shadows. Great entry, I like the bold lines, colours and rendering.
Hey, dudes, good stuff, and thank you both for helping to keep this thread alive. It's hard to compete with CHOW and COW it seems, ha. Some crits now:
Dayle - I'm having a hard time getting a feeling for the scale of it. It could be just big enough for the alien or it could be a huge facility (because of the smoke stacks). It might be helpful to put in something that would let the viewer know immediately what you're going for in terms of size and scale. Also the background elements (fog and texture) take away too much attention from your presentation and actually work against the readability. I think it would be best to have a minimal BG that way the focus can be just on the design. And finally I'd say that your perspective/form construction could use some attention. Joe and I are going to be starting a perspective study thread soon, so I invite you and anyone else to come and study along with us.
Ariphats - Ah, predator. He's one bad motha. I like that your design actually kept with a lot of the design elements from the predator movies (planar shapes/jagged edges and such) and the colors also match quite well with the originals too. I think it could have been pushed more in terms of functionality. What are the pipes for? How does it work, exactly? Keeping these things in mind will help with design choices and overall presentation of your product. This is what I'm trying to focus on right now. I've come out of that zone where I couldn't draw for shit, and now that I'm getting better I've started to get happy as long as I draw something that looks cool without focusing on the hows and whys, which is what design really is about. Form follows function, I've heard a million times and hoping that I'll get it to sink in eventually. The rendering on your piece could also use work. Even though it's a line drawing, the values should still read on their own and right now they're a bit flat.
Good job on everything guys. Hope to see you continue with these competitions!
