A friend asked me to paint a poster for his independent project. It has to have a strong retro feel.
White background with a single small figure in the bottom part of the image. A figure seen from the back walks toward horizon. It is flanked with high, impending rocks topped by trees and shrubs. The catch is: those rocks are actually two large 3D words - the title of the movie. Think Ben Hur poster, but with one word on each side on the road/canyon. The letters have cracks and texture like...well, stone. The warm light comes from the horizon, (but the source of it is not visible) illuminating the side of the stone words facing the figure. The shadows are cool. Figure casts long shadow towards the viewer.
The scene is rather simple to imagine, but complicated to describe.
What I need is an advice.
In order to have a consistent and evocative light, and nice balanced color scheme, I'd like to first make a simple mock-up in some 3D software to check how the actual light would behave. The problem is - I am skilled in PS, but do not have experience in 3d apps. Is there any 3D app which I could master in a week or so, not on a pro level, but just good enough to make those 3D words (topped by trees) and illuminate them? That will not be the final image, but the main reference for the painting in oils.
Thanx in advance.
