Am I not suppose to try to fully render a drawing on sketch paper? I find my pencil to look like crayon unless I press very hard.

Unless the paper is very smooth and meant more for pens or markers, it should be all right. All it needs is some tooth to catch the graphite particles.
If you want to do really smooth rendering, keep your pressure very light and move your pencil in very small circles, avoiding harsh obvious lines and building the graphite up very gradually.
okay, so I probably crossed hatched too hard and fast.
try a smother paper and see how that works you mite like drawing on it more.
Pete - there aren't really any "supposed tos"...except that you're supposed to work with the media at hand to get the results and make the statement you want...if something isn't working, like tooth of the paper, drawing media, etc. then switch and try something more in line with the effect you're after.
