It is really hard for me to come up with a crit, but I make it a matter of policy when I post , so here it is. I think your character designs could use a little more embellishment. They are usually shirtless dude with a funny type of face. I would love to see some additions to the props/costume etc that could tell me a little more about his story and background. Maybe your evil pirate dude is also exceptionally vain, maybe he keeps a mirror and a comb in his back pocket at all times. Maybe your old hermit gut spends a lot of time with pigeons and tends to have feathers stuck in his hair. Just a couple thoughts. Keep up the good work.

Now in color. Didn't want to go too realistic on this one. Also fixed the lighting on the table.
I really like the scene you created on your last post, I just think that you should add some element (a vase, a cat, a character) entering or pecking the room from the left door, because right now we see the room and that empty light space is atracting too much attention and there is nothing to see there. Did you get what I mean?
Really nice portfolio piece, overall great disney-ish mood in your work, great expressions. You draw them from references or you draw them out of your mind?
And great pencils, nice hatched shading, I always like that a lot. Reminds me I should do more figure drawing too.

@Overtoom Thank you . I draw them from my mind. I still look around and document myself but I don't have any reference opened when drawing expressions and cartoons. I try to actually think and analyze those by myself instead of copying. That way I 'feel' the expression better. As far as Disney-ish goes, I'm a very big fan of Glen Keane and his life-like pencils. I could look at him draw all day and never get bored.

This is the third perspective piece. One more and I'm done with the perspective section of my portfolio.
Spent a whole 2 days on this one phew. Pencil and then photoshop for the smaller details like windows and shadows. Didn't use a reference photo for the street design. Only searched medieval and victorian buildings to see how I should make the roofs and windows.
@Overtoom Sorry for the really really late reply. Any book about perspective is good. They all have the same rules, it's not subjective, like abstract art for example. What I really found helpful (because of the neat tricks he teaches) were the videos from the 'Gnomon - Fundamentals of Perspective' three volumes.
Haven't posted anything in a week oh god. I've been drawing and experimenting a lot. Only have untill the end of the month to finish this portfolio, dang it.

Threw in some quick colors on this one. Didn't polish it to completion because, strangely, I like the graphic feel it has. Tried multiple times to finish it but in the end it lacked 'essence' and 'life'.
It's a great effort you're making here! To me the characters you've got to draw not only have gotten a personality and traits of their own that you managed to introduce- they also seem alive! There's an ease to the drawing that I must be mistaking by plenty of scrapwork and essay and error; but for all the rest the figures here are expressive, and the backgrounds, perspective and color work seem wonderful to me, and even if devoid of people they exude the same energy.
I'm getting this piece of advice from other animators too and I think you received it as well: do not desist in learning figure drawing- more serious approaches to the figure here look good, but I would advise to introduce what you know about cartooning to life and gesture drawing.
Please keep it up! As a person who is studying figure drawing for animation, your artwork is the kind that inspires me and makes me look up to you.

Dude, there's some great stuff in here, and lots of potential, for serious. I specially dig the simple drawings with expressions and stuff like that, you don't get lost in other things, you capture what's important, and that is so very essential in order to become a great animator. You're doing great man, maybe some more values, cause even though yours arre correct I feel there's a lack of something on them I don't know , maybe contrast or...I don't know, but I think revisiting values including more dramatic lighting would improve greatly the paintings. Overall very fresh and entertaining to watch, so please, keep it up, I'm eager to see what will come out of here in the next year or so!
To answer your forum title. You are creating awesome drawings. I love the simplicity of your drawings. As suira stated, you capture the most important stuff. No fillers, just drawing in it's simplistic form. Nice!

@ennuyant: Thank you for the kind words . I'm keeping a 'safe' approach twards life drawing because they need to be adequate for my admission portfolio. Other participants have been to life drawing sessions and courses whilst I've tried my best with photo references. Nevertheless, a very good suggestion to look forwards to.

@Suira: Thank you . Tried my best to figure out key elements. In general, I'm very conscious about values and contrast. I have a 21.5 inch monitor and I have to keep moving my head to see how the different viewing angles change the piece.
@Colour Coded: Thank you . I guess the simplicity rubbed off from my graphic design days where I favored minimalistic styles. Working with small yet effective changes.
A small update. A piece for the expressions section.
These are the first 8 panels from my storyboard. You're supposed to tell a story or a sequence of events without text or dialogue, only composition, camera placement and body language. I've got to do the other half of it. Not going to narrate it here, I'm curious to see if it's efficiently made.
I'll stick to drawing what I love most for my portfolio. That way, if I get in, I get in for who I really am.

Wow mate, this interior perspective piece is amazing! I absolutely love this composition, those shapes and how you played this light. But I gotta say that when you colored it, it lost a lot of the previous charm. If I were you, I'd put the black/white one to the portfolio.

Awesome stuff! I love looking at animator and animation-inspired artists. It's a language that I understand!
Your drawings are great, and your line of action is strong in every character. And the volumes in your characters stays really consistent (in squash and stretch.) Which will really appeal in your portfolio, I think. Really really nice stuff!
A few things that I notice: Sometimes I think your use of texture in your paintings is a little distracting. The first page, a guy had a chain mail sleeve, and it really took away from the drama of the piece. I haven't noticed it that much in more recent works, but maybe just keep that in mind.
Your illustrations have everything going for them, except the camera! They're all quite similar. The camera is almost always an eye-level straight sideways shot of the character. Post 51 deviates, and that makes it stand out a lot. I think a really good portfolio piece would be a dramatic angle shot with character interaction; you definitely have all the skills to produce it!
And last, your storyboard breaks the 180 rule a couple times (or at least seems to.) Between frames 5 and 6, and again in 10 and 11. It looks very nice otherwise!
Anyways, you definitely have a huge pile of talent, and I know your portfolio will really impress whoever you send it to. Good job!
i dont know why, but i love your colouring the most when you use warm golds and teracottas. it's just amazing. You are really talented, i would love to see more realistic paintings from you, because from right now i can see that your realistic paints kind of lack abit of depth when switching from pens to paint.

I think your stuff is amazing. it's really inspiring to see someone such as yourself applying the sort of animation principles and things i was taught but have yet to master. your portfolio is going to be epic. edit: oh yeah and I agree with the person above who talked about the 180 line. because of this both your sword-guy and your king are on the same side of the screen, even though i read it as they were in opposition or something? idk. but it definitely flips between the woman approaching the table and placing the cup there. maybe try some more dramatic angles instead?

I was thinking of doing some action piece with multiple characters and then I read your suggestion haha. But yes, cameras are one of my biggest weaknesses that I need to tackle.
@LoudLikeNature: Haha, warm tones are my favourites, so I'm in my element when I use them . I self imposed a limit referring to how realistic I'll go with things. I don't want to create concept art pieces with realistic anatomy and things, my goal is achieve a stylized look, which helps me in what I want to do.

Firstly, I'll tackle the 180 degree rule issue. I don't think panels #5 and #6 break the rule because it's the same camera, only lowered. Here's a quick doodle to show that.

As for panel #11, you are totally right! Truly thank you for pointing it out. I have a week left before submitting the portfolio and I'll redraw and edit every problem.
