The Academy of Art University is on my top choices for art schools. I've reviewed the website thoroughly, requested a catalog, and a representative called me. I think I'm pretty hooked, but I would just like to know from any experience (onsite or online) what's the university is like. What's life like on campus? What's life like taking online classes? What's life like being on your own and visiting campus on weekends? Would you recommend living in San Francisco? If so, what makes it appealing?
Also any advice, or useful information would be appreciated. Thank you!
I don't go to AAU, but I have friends who do. It's a weird place, very unlike any other art school out there. It's huge, and as a result, has a lot of really good teachers and very talented students. It also has a huge number of really bad teachers and students who have no business being in art school. Additionally, it's run as a for profit corporation, which means that the administration is primarily concerned with making money, and only secondarily concerned about your education.
It's definitely possible to get a good education from AAU, but you have to be very, very careful about what classes you sign up for.
