Hello, I am new to here. I am looking for comment and critique on my paintings. =)
Thanks so much!!!
The dragon with mountains in the background - the dragon and the water in the background are same values & same bluish hue - the form gets lost. Not a good thing. You can play with saturation, values and highlights to make the dragon pop up. Using same values & hues for both dragon & background also resulted in lack of depth (atmospheric perspective). Mountains are just as busy in terms of contrast and textures as your focal point - the dragon. Not a good thing. Less is more with distant landscape rendering, usually.
The waterfall piece - it sort of works as a simple background. But you could push it further. You applied atmospheric perspective to the distant mountains peeks, but they are peeking out just a tiny bit, which makes them look like an afterthought. You designed them to be a part of the painting, so let them show (should be bigger). More hue & saturation contrast would help. I can see you tried to make the greenery brighter, but only brightening the same hue doesn't have the same effect as if you made it warmer, with hues more towards orange, to portray sunlight effect & shadows. It's not just for sake of realism, it will make the image read better and make it more interesting & aesthetically pleasing.
The girl - focus more on establishing facial form by correct values. Study faces and think about human body in 3D to realize how to establish shadows & light. There's a huge highlight in cheekbone area, but it's too big and undefined. What's up with the pointy chin? And ditch the outlines as they don't go well with the way you rendered her clothes (painterly vs outlined, leading to inconsistency in styles)
The robot in front of the city is pretty good, although it could use some focal point. Like well rendered "face" or even a glowing eye, putting the focus somewhere. To me it's your strongest piece.
It's a bit harsh and straight to the point critique but I hope it helped and have fun painting.
No, it's not harsh at all, you just pointed out my weaknesses and I didn't know how to solve them.
Your critique is extremely helpful, thanks so much!!!! I will try to make those change for my next painting~
That is nice work. I love it.
